Seagulls, or gulls,[1] appear in the Super Mario franchise mostly as ambient components of beach-themed locations; even when they do not physically appear, their distinctive caws may be heard as background noises in these areas. In certain games, they have more substantial interactive roles. Seagulls are derived from real-world gulls.

History[edit ]

Mario Kart series[edit ]

Mario Kart 64[edit ]

Seagulls first appear in Mario Kart 64 , where they can be seen flying over Koopa Troopa Beach.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit ]

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!! , seagulls appear flying around in flocks in Peach Beach and Yoshi Circuit.

Mario Kart World[edit ]

Seagulls appear flying around marine areas in Mario Kart World such as near Salty Salty Speedway and Peach Beach.

Wario Land II[edit ]

Gulls in Wario Land II are harmless creatures found flapping their wings in one place in midair. Wario can use them as platforms to reach remote locations; however, they fly away before long once he touches them but come back shortly afterwards. Like the game's enemies, gulls can be defeated with a Dash Attack or a ground pound, respawning only if Wario leaves and re-enters their area. Gulls first appear in the level Get in the Tea Cup.

Game & Watch Gallery series[edit ]

Seagulls, here identified as albatrosses,[2] appear in the Modern version of the Game & Watch title Donkey Kong Jr. in Game & Watch Gallery 3 and Game & Watch Gallery 4 . In these games, when Donkey Kong Jr. gets the key on the second stage, an albatross appears and acts as a platform so that he can reach Donkey Kong's cage. Unlike its Wario Land II counterpart, the albatross does not fly away when Donkey Kong Jr. touches it. However, it does regularly fly away for a short time, forcing Donkey Kong Jr. to time his jump carefully. An albatross also occasionally appears in the background at sunset in the Modern version of Fire from Game & Watch Gallery 4.

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit ]

Flocks of seagulls appear in Super Mario Sunshine , flying around various areas in Isle Delfino. They fly in circles around specific areas in the sky, never landing, and can be heard calling when near. Seagulls cannot be interacted with, unlike the parrot-like birds. Flocks of seagulls also appear on the game's title screen. In this game, seagulls have an orange ring around their eyes, and blue-tipped wings with lighter blue details.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

Seagulls in Super Mario Galaxy occur flying through the air in beach-themed galaxies. They do not land during normal gameplay, but they appear grounded during the hidden cutscene with Rosalina in the Gateway Galaxy. Their profile is embroidered into flags present in the Sea Slide Galaxy, depicted eating a mushroom. Seagulls are the only ambient birds in Super Mario Galaxy. Unlike butterflies, they have no interactive elements.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit ]

Seagulls in Super Mario Galaxy 2 retain the same design and behavior as before, appearing in the air of beach-themed galaxies, and they occur around Starship Mario, likely to strengthen Starship Mario's allusion to seafaring vessels.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit ]

Seagulls in Super Mario 3D Land appear in beach-themed courses, flying through the sky. They have a slightly more simplified design than they did in the Super Mario Galaxy games. Unlike small birds, seagulls do not land or respond to Mario's actions.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit ]

Most kingdoms have a unique, interactable bird species in Super Mario Odyssey . In most of them, the bird is a type of small bird, but seagulls are the species in the Seaside Kingdom. Seagulls are skittish and fly away when approached by Mario or if Cappy is tossed towards them. If Mario falls asleep in the Seaside Kingdom, seagulls may flock near him and one may even roost on his nose. During the objective "Bird Traveling Over the Ocean", a glowing seagull holds a Power Moon. It releases it when Mario makes contact with the bird.

Seagulls appear alongside all other birds in the Mushroom Kingdom once Princess Peach and Tiara are rescued.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit ]

Seagulls in the Bowser's Fury campaign spot cat ears, and they appear throughout Lake Lapcat. Seagulls fly away if Mario or Bowser Jr. comes near, or if a Green Shell is kicked or thrown at them. All seagulls fly away immediately when the rain that signals Fury Bowser is about to rampage begins. There is a tendency for seagulls' landing spots indicating where coins are hidden: such coins cause the player's controller to rumble as the player gets close to them, with the power of the rumble being inversely proportional to the player's distance from the coins. A Ground Pound into the location allows Mario to collect the coins, although as Cat Mario he can instead claw dive.

Mario Party 8[edit ]

Seagulls in Mario Party 8 appear on Goomba's Booty Boardwalk. Aside from appearing in the background, seagulls are ordered by Captain Goomba to transport the player to the beginning of the board after giving them a Star.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit ]

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership , seagulls appear as ambient creatures that fly away when approached by Mario and Luigi.
