Effect Rewards the player with an item when all notes are collected

Notes (also called music notes,[1] musical notes,[2] or song notes[3] ) are colorful items in the Super Mario franchise that debuted in Super Mario Galaxy . Making contact with an environmental trigger causes a string of notes to appear in the immediate area for a limited period of time. Collecting every one rewards the player character with an item. The player character collects a note just by touching it, which is accompanied by the sound of a single musical note. Each note in the string plays a musical note at a different frequency from the others. In most games, collecting each note in succession sometimes creates a melody.

Notes are generally shaped like eighth notes, though large notes[4] —the environmental triggers in Super Mario Odyssey —are shaped like treble clefs.

History[edit ]

Requested improvements must be clear, pertinent, and well-formed. Please refrain from adding bullet points such as "Add more information" or "Write the rest of the article".

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

In Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port, notes usually appear when Mario (or Luigi) touches a ? Coin, although the ones in the Gold Leaf Galaxy appear if the player rings a bell with the Star Pointer. Afterwards, they line up, and Mario needs to grab all of them. The background music also mutes when the notes are activated. Each note makes a different sound and together forms a short jingle or tune, typically from another game in the Super Mario series, such as "Underground BGM" and "Underwater BGM" from Super Mario Bros. If the player gets every note, Mario will get an item, such as a 1-Up Mushroom. However, if the player fails to collect all the notes within the time limit, the remaining notes will disappear. The notes are also used in a few galaxies where they need to be collected to get a Power Star, such as the Hurry-Scurry Galaxy, the Gold Leaf Galaxy, and the Sea Slide Galaxy.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit ]

In Super Mario Galaxy 2 , notes appear in Sky Station Galaxy, the Puzzle Plank Galaxy, Boo Moon Galaxy, and the Throwback Galaxy. They retain their function from the first game, but their environmental triggers are more varied. In the Puzzle Plank Galaxy, Ground-Pound Switches cause notes to appear. In the Throwback Galaxy, they are released from a smashed crate. A ? Coin appears as a trigger only in Boo Moon Galaxy.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit ]

Notes appear in Super Mario 3D Land as well with a similar purpose, activated by a P Switch or when a bush is rustled. If all of the notes are collected, Mario can earn a power-up if he is in either Small form or Super form. Otherwise, he earns a 1-Up Mushroom.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit ]

In Super Mario Odyssey, large notes (recognized as "treble clefs" in the Prima Games guidebook)[5] appear in every kingdom except for the Dark Side and Darker Side of the moon. Touching one causes a string of small notes[4] to appear. Collecting all of them awards Mario a Power Moon. Notes appear in 2D areas, the first instance where they have been included in an area on a 2D plane. Like platforms, enemies, other items, and Mario himself, notes appear as 8-bit sprites in these areas. Notes are a prominent component of the Playing in VR mode added in version 1.3.0 on April 25, 2019, in which collecting all of the notes in an area reveals an instrument that must be returned to a corresponding musician.

Power Moons[edit ]

A total of 27 Power Moons involve collecting notes. Except for "Jaxi Stunt Driving", the Power Moons' names are prefixed with the pun "Taking Notes".

# Image Name Kingdom Location Availability
27 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: In the Fog Cap Kingdom To the west of the Central Plaza area, the player should look for a top-hat-shaped platform with a rainbow-colored treble clef atop it. Mario must capture a Paragoomba and use it to fly out to the treble clef, which (when collected) will temporarily spawn some notes over the fog. If the player can collect all of the notes before they disappear, Mario will receive a Power Moon. Available after opening this kingdom's Moon Rock.
35 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Hurry Upward Cascade Kingdom In the kingdom's first 2D area, the player should notice a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must collect this treble clef, as well as all the notes that appear, before they disappear in order to receive a Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
32 The thirty-second Power Moon of the Sand Kingdom. Taking Notes: Jump on the Palm Sand Kingdom In the Desert Oasis, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef on top of a palm tree. Mario should collect this treble clef, which will temporarily spawn six notes on top of the palm trees. If the player can collect all the notes before they disappear, Mario will receive a Power Moon. Available from the start.
59 The fifty-ninth Power Moon of the Sand Kingdom. Jaxi Stunt Driving Sand Kingdom In the area with the "Jaxi Driver" Power Moon, the player can find a side path with a rainbow-colored treble clef. If the player can collect all the notes from the treble clef before they disappear, Mario will receive a secret Power Moon. Available from the start.
79 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Running Down Sand Kingdom There is a rainbow treble clef in the near southwesternmost corner of Tostarena, found nearby two large cacti. The notes that spawn form a straight line pointing northeast and last only 10 seconds. Given the rather strict time limit, Mario must ride Jaxi to collect all the notes in time and reveal the Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
80 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: In the Wall Painting Sand Kingdom On the second level in the 8-bit mural of Tostarena Ruins Round Tower, the rainbow treble clef is on the north facing side of the tower. Mario must simply collect all the notes to reveal the Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
13 The thirteenth Power Moon of the Lake Kingdom. Taking Notes: Dive and Swim Lake Kingdom In the small body of water near the Odyssey, the player should look for a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario should collect this treble clef, which will temporarily spawn some notes in the water. If the player can collect all the notes before they disappear, Mario will receive a Power Moon. Available from the start.
14 The fourteenth Power Moon of the Lake Kingdom. Taking Notes: In the Cliffside Lake Kingdom From the Underwater Entrance checkpoint, the player should swim to the surface and locate an 8-bit Warp Pipe along the left wall. Mario must enter this Warp Pipe to find a rainbow-colored treble clef, which will spawn notes once collected. If the player can collect all of the notes before they disappear, Mario will receive a Power Moon. Available from the start.
67 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: On Top of the Wall Wooded Kingdom On top the southeast portion of the natural wall surrounding the southern forest, a rainbow treble clef can be found. Touching it reveals a very long trail of notes leading all the way back to the where the Odyssey lands in this kingdom. Due to the rather tight time limit, Mario must roll along the trail to cover more time, but he must also be cautious as the path gets narrower near the end, and could risk falling off course. The Power Moon appears near exactly where the last note is, after Mario has collected all the notes. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
68 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Stretching Wooded Kingdom Along the northern wall below the Iron Cage, there is another rainbow treble clef. The set of notes revealed vaguely form a "V" shape, and most notes are best reached by stretching upward as an Uproot. The Power Moon revealed also has a high altitude that can best be reached by an Uproot. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
6 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Up and Down Cloud Kingdom East of the arena is a Hip Drop Move Lift that quickly levitates upon being ground pounded, leading to a rainbow treble clef that reveals 12 notes in groups of three, all at different heights. Mario must throw Cappy at the right time to collect these notes until the Power Moon is revealed. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
29 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Stretch and Shrink Lost Kingdom West of the western propeller pillar is a rainbow treble clef that must be accessed via Tropical Wiggler, as the path the notes form require the stretching abilities of the Tropical Wiggler. When all notes are collected in time, the Power Moon appears on the platform in between both propeller pillars. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.
33 The thirty-third Power Moon of the Metro Kingdom. Taking Notes: In the Private Room Metro Kingdom On the main street, the player should look for an open building along the left side. Mario must enter this building to find a rainbow-colored treble clef. If the player can collect all the notes from the treble clef before they disappear, Mario will receive a Power Moon. Available after collecting the "New Donk City's Pest Problem" Multi Moon.
16 The sixteenth Power Moon of the Snow Kingdom. Taking Notes: Snow Path Dash Snow Kingdom To the northwest of the Above the Ice Well checkpoint the player can find a rainbow treble clef. After touching it, Mario must collect three different lines of rainbow notes in order to obtain this Power Moon. Available after collecting "The Bound Bowl Grand Prix" Multi Moon.
31 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Ocean Surface Dash Seaside Kingdom Near the Beach House checkpoint, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must throw Cappy at the Rocket Flower next to it and run across the water and collect the line of notes to obtain this Power Moon. A Gushen can also be used to complete this. Available from the start.
65 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Ocean-Bottom Maze Seaside Kingdom In the 2D area with the "Ocean-Bottom Maze: Treasure" Power Moon, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must touch it and then quickly collect all of the notes that appear. Available after opening this kingdom's Moon Rock.
66 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes in the Sea Seaside Kingdom Near the Glass Palace checkpoint, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef on top of a column underwater. The player must touch it and quickly collect the three circles of notes before they disappear. Available after opening this kingdom's Moon Rock.
23 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Swimming in Magma Luncheon Kingdom Near the Remote Island in the Lava, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef sitting in the middle of the lava. Mario must touch it and quickly collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available after collecting the "Under The Cheese Rocks" Power Moon.
36 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Big Pot Swim Luncheon Kingdom In the giant pot that Mario fought Cookatiel in earlier, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef. The player must touch it and collect the three sets of notes that appear before the timer runs out to obtain this Power Moon. Available after collecting the "Cookatiel Showdown!" Multi Moon.
46 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Spinning Athletics Luncheon Kingdom In the area with the "Spinning Athletics End Goal" Power Moon, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef on a lime green rotating platform. Mario must touch it and collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available after collecting the "Under the Cheese Rocks" Power Moon.
18 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Between Spinies Bowser's Kingdom At the Third Courtyard (Rear), the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must touch it and collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available from the start.
32 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: In the Folding Screen Bowser's Kingdom In the area with the "Scene of Crossing the Poison Swamp" Power Moon, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef in the third screen. Mario must touch it and collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available after collecting the "Smart Bombing" Power Moon.
54 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: On the Wall Bowser's Kingdom At the end of the Third Courtyard (Rear), the player must jump onto the roof of the building and go the far right side to find a lower platform with a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must touch it and collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available after opening this kingdom's Moon Rock.
55 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes with a Spinning Throw Bowser's Kingdom At the Main Courtyard Entrance, the player can find a rainbow-colored treble clef where they fought Hariet earlier. Mario must touch it and collect all three sets of notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available after opening this kingdom's Moon Rock.
8 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: On the Moon's Surface Moon Kingdom To the far right of the Ringing-Bells Plateau checkpoint on a higher platform, Mario can find a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must touch it and quickly collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available from the start.
34 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: In Low Gravity Moon Kingdom In the 2D area with the "Along the Cliff Face" Power Moon, Mario can find a rainbow-colored treble clef. Mario must touch it and collect all of the notes that appear before the timer runs out. Available after opening this kingdom's Moon Rock.
11 The location of a Power Moon in Super Mario Odyssey Taking Notes: Around the Well Mushroom Kingdom Obtained by entering the 8-bit pipe on the side of the well to the west of the castle, running all the way around the side, and collecting the treble clef and the notes it spawns. Available from the start.

Minecraft[edit ]

Notes replace Music Discs and one of the paintings in the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in Minecraft , having an appearance from the Super Mario Galaxy games.

Super Mario Party[edit ]

Notes appear in the River Survival mode of Super Mario Party . Collecting every note in a single route causes a Minigame Balloon to appear. This is the notes' first appearance in the Super Mario franchise outside a mainline title.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit ]

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership , notes appear whenever a P Switch is activated. Collecting all of them rewards the Bros. with a valuable item. They appear in Rumbla Island (which rewards Dirt-Cheap Wear), Allsand Island (which rewards an Ultra Mushroom), and in Ryder O'Reilly's challenges on Bitsi Islet which give a 1-Up DX, Max Nut, then Cozy Wear DX respectively for each challenge.
