The P-Wing is a special item that debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3 . The "P" stands for "Paratroopa" or "Patapata" (the Japanese name for the enemy). In that game, it enables infinite flight for Raccoon Mario and Tanooki Mario, broadly functioning similarly to the Wing from the prior game Super Mario Bros. Special . There is a similar item in New Super Mario Bros. U called the P-Acorn.

History[edit ]

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

In Super Mario Bros. 3, the P-Wing[1] [2] [3] [4] (alternatively named Magic Wing in the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Mario All-Stars manuals[5] [6] ) allows Mario or Luigi to fly in the air with their Raccoon forms for an unlimited amount of time for one level only; they revert to their normal Raccoon form abilities after clearing a level. However, if the brothers are hit or receive a non-flight-based power-up within a level, they will lose the power of the P-Wing. Infinite 1-Up tricks involving stomping do not work in this form; all enemies stomped always give 100 points if Mario is using a P-Wing.

If a P-Wing is used from the map screen, the "P" on Mario or Luigi's body (as shown in the sprite on the left) indicates that they have P-Wing abilities. The "P" is not seen in the actual level and it is not seen again on the map screen once the level is exited, which indicates Mario or Luigi has reverted to their normal abilities. A P-Wing ability will also be lost if the player uses Lakitu's Cloud or a Magic Whistle with it active. The P-Wing will also disappear after the level even if the player enters a level that does not require flight, such as a Toad House, a Warp Pipe, or the world's Castle after the Koopaling's airship has flown away.

The P-Wing can be combined with the Tanooki Suit. However, in order to do this, one must use a P-Wing, then enter a level that has a Tanooki Suit hidden within it (World 4-5, World 5-5, World 6-3, or World 7- Fortress) and collect that Tanooki Suit without losing the P-Wing's power; using a Tanooki Suit on the map will override the P-Wing's effect.

P-Wings are commonly found in treasure boxes left behind after defeating certain Hammer Brothers on the map screen. They can also be found in secret White Mushroom Houses accessible by collecting a certain amount of coins in certain levels in the odd-numbered worlds (World 1-4, World 3-8, World 5-5, and World 7-2), while in the even-numbered worlds (apart from Dark Land), White Mushroom Houses contain Anchors. Additionally, by beating the game and restarting without resetting it, the player is rewarded with 28 P-Wings in their inventory, though only in the original NES version of the game.

Unused data in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 shows that the P-Wing could have been in a ? Block, like other power-ups, such as the Super Leaf and Fire Flower. Additionally, the Orange Mushroom House in World-e has Mario use a P-Wing to ascend to a box while avoiding spikes.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit ]

Assist Block artwork from Super Mario 3D Land
The P-Wing Assist Block in Super Mario 3D Land

In the Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land , the P-Wing functions differently, warping Mario to the end of the course. If Mario touches a P-Wing, it will go into storage to use later. It only appears if Mario or Luigi loses 10 lives in a (skipped) normal world level (making P-Wing Assist Blocks appear), or within certain Mystery Boxes. Mario will lose the P-Wing if he gets any other power-up (excluding a Super Star or Invincibility Leaf), as the P-Wing will be replaced if Mario is in Super form or better.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit ]

While the P-Wing does not appear as a power-up in New Super Mario Bros. 2 , it is seen as an icon on the P-Meter, replacing the "P" icon in the meter's original appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3. The P-Meter (and its P-Wing icon) only appears when Mario or Luigi gets a Super Leaf (i.e. turns into Raccoon form) or an Invincibility Leaf (i.e. turns into White Raccoon form)

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

Magic Wings (additionally called Raccoon Power Wings by Toad) make their appearance in the episode "Up, Up, and a Koopa". Princess Toadstool and Toad look in her castle's dungeon for a treasure chest that contains Magic Wings so they can use them to fly to Sky Land and save Mario and Luigi. Princess Toadstool refers to the Magic Wings being golden despite the wings not appearing as such.

Mario Kart series[edit ]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit ]

The P-Wing makes a cameo appearance in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! . It appears on the side of some cargo trucks in Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City. Additionally, the license plate of the truck that has the P-Wing on it says "SMB3", a common abbreviation of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit ]

A kart called the P-Wing appears as a DLC kart in ×ばつ Mario Kart 8">Animal Crossing ×ばつ Mario Kart 8 in Mario Kart 8 , and is unlockable in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe . The icon of the power-up appears on the kart's front hood. The back wheel guards of the kart also resemble the item.

Mario Kart Tour[edit ]

The P-Wing kart returns in Mario Kart Tour , and two other versions, the Pink Wing and the Frost Wing, also appear.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit ]

Trunk Twister
A plane with a P-Wing emblem in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze , planes featuring a P-Wing emblem can be found in the levels Trunk Twister and Crazy Clouds.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit ]

P-Wings appear in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition . They are used to transform enemies like Goombas and Koopa Troopas into their flying variants, such as the Koopa Paratroopa.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit ]

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie , P-Wings in the same design as their Super Mario Bros. 3 sprite can be seen being sold in the antiques shop.

Profiles[edit ]
