A Hot Foot[1] is a fiery enemy that first appears in Super Mario Bros. 3 . It is essentially a walking candle flame.

History[edit ]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Hot Feet inhabit the candles of fortresses, first appearing in World 4- Fortress 1. Similarly to a Boo, if Mario or Luigi looks at a Hot Foot, it will stand still (with its legs hidden), but if he looks away, the Hot Foot will resume walking towards him. They can walk off platforms. Hot Feet can be defeated only by hitting them with Hammer Mario's hammers or touching them while invincible.

An unused variant of Hot Foot that alternates between walking back and forth and chasing the player was planned to appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, but went unused.[2]

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

A single Hot Foot makes an appearance in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 in the episode "Princess Toadstool for President," where it leaps off its candle and chases after Mario and Luigi for a brief time.

Super Mario Bros. Print World[edit ]

In Super Mario Bros. Print World , a Hot Foot is included as one of the printable pictures.

Nintendo Adventure Books[edit ]

In the Nintendo Adventure Book Koopa Capers , several Hot Feet appear, guarding a coin-filled cave Luigi can find in the Magma Pits. After he collects some of the coins, the Hot Feet chase him, leading him to either a Fire Chomp (which can lead to a Game Over) or a door leading to a chamber filled with Firesnakes. Referencing the confusion over the plural version of their name, Luigi is unable to decide on whether to call them Hot Feet or Hot Foots.

Mario Kart World[edit ]

In Mario Kart World , a Hot Foot makes a cameo appearance as the mascot of the Hot Foot Gasoline sponsor and as multiple collectable stickers.

Profiles[edit ]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

  • Instruction booklet description:
    • English:
Usually, Hot Foot stays on a burning candle. If Mario gets close, Hot Foot will start to chase him.
    • Other languages:
      • Japanese:
        普段はろうそくの上で燃えているが、マリオが通り過ぎると......。
(Translation: Usually it burns atop a candle, but when Mario passes by...)

Huh? The candle flame!

It pretends to be a candle on the wall, a treacherous thing. Only the flame will follow you at any moment. Like Boo (p. 116), it stops when you face forward, so turn around from time to time.

Naming[edit ]

The enemy's English name is derived from the slang term "hot-footed," which refers to moving quickly.

Names in other languages[edit ]

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media they are associated with in the "Notes" column.
