Stretches are variants of Boos attached to solid platforms that appear in the Super Mario series, debuting in Super Mario Bros. 3 .

History[edit ]

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

Super Mario Bros. 3 promotional artwork: A Stretch
Original design of a Stretch for Super Mario Bros. 3

In Super Mario Bros. 3 , Stretches are enemies encountered in World 3- Fortress 2 and World 6- Fortress 3. Unlike "Boo" Diddlies, they lack teeth and their artwork shows them as having fingered hands rather than featureless nub arms. Stretches can often be found in groups, and only appear from a unique, ghostly white platform. If Mario or Luigi tries to pass a Stretch, it rises from the top or bottom of its platform in a random position and tries to hit him by moving left to right. Once a Stretch has traveled the full length of the platform in both directions, it retracts. Many platforms have a Stretch on both the top and the bottom, though not all do so. Stretches can be defeated only with a Starman or hammers thrown by Hammer Mario.

In World 7- Fortress 1, Stretches themselves do not appear, as the entire fortress is devoid of enemies aside from Boom Boom. However, the white platforms that would contain them do appear.

Super Mario Maker series[edit ]

“The gravity on this planet is all over the place, and it's inhabited by spectral Stretches!”
Stargazer , Super Mario Maker 2

Stretches reappear in Super Mario Maker and its Nintendo 3DS port, 27 years following its previous appearance for the former, marking the longest gap between appearances for an enemy in the franchise. In the course editor, a Boo will automatically become a Stretch if it is placed on top of or just below a solid block. Due to this trait, they are referred to by labels and the editor voice simply as Boos in Super Mario Maker, as they do not have a separate selection icon; they are the only enemy variation in the game to have a trait like this.

In these games, they can be placed on any surface, and will pop up more periodically. Their appearance is slightly different, being standard Boos with a flattened underside, and they are not connected to a ghostly platform anymore. New sprites for Stretches have been made in all styles. However, they cannot accept Super Mushrooms, as attempting to give them a Super Mushroom will just turn the Stretch into a Big Boo, rather than bigger Stretches. Giving them wings will make them faster and will teleport to the next platform in its direction once it reaches a platform's edge. Stretches can be defeated in Super Mario Maker like normal Boos, with either a Super Star or a Goomba's Shoe.

In Super Mario Maker 2 , they are correctly referred to as Stretch, unlike in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. Stretches can now be stomped on by the player wearing a Dry Bones Shell or hit by a hammer from Builder Mario to defeat them. In the nighttime Ground theme, they stop moving when looked at.

A Boo being given a parachute will cancel out it becoming a Stretch; this is the only way to place down a Boo one tile below a ceiling or above a floor without becoming a Stretch. Taking the parachute off under these conditions, however, will turn it into a Stretch again.

Super Mario Run[edit ]

Stretches reappear in Super Mario Run , where they are usually found in Ghost Houses and act like they did in Super Mario Maker. They have the same appearance as the Stretches in the New Super Mario Bros. U style from Super Mario Maker .

Super Mario Bros. (Valiant Comics)[edit ]

Extract from "In the Swim! Fun and Sun Fashions"
A Stretch, as depicted in the Super Mario Bros. comics

A single Stretch appears in the Super Mario Bros. comic "In the Swim! Fun and Sun Fashions" in an advertisement for swimwear, which depicts it lifting weights on a beach. The Stretch is considerably different than its in-game counterparts, featuring only one face markedly different from that of a Boo's, hands and feet, and a uniform Z shape.

A ghost lurking on the floor

Stretch is a tormenting ghost that emerges from the white floor. He moves left and right, blocking Mario's path. Since he cannot be defeated by fire or a tail, watch for an opportunity to run past him.

Super Mario Maker[edit ]

  • Play Nintendo: Creepy crawliesDrag a Boo to the ground and watch it transform into a Stretch, a crawling menace that pops out of nowhere to give you a scare. You can even hang them from the ceiling![2]

Super Mario Run[edit ]

  • Notebook bio: This ghost really likes sticking to blocks, suddenly appearing and disappearing as it moves randomly.
