Deep Cheeps[1] (formerly formatted as Deep-Cheeps)[2] are a special variety of Cheep Cheep that is first found in New Super Mario Bros. While regular Cheep Cheeps swim straight forward, Deep Cheeps swim toward Mario or Luigi. Deep Cheeps give up pursuing Mario or Luigi if they swim behind or far enough from them. Years before Deep Cheeps appeared, green Cheep Cheeps have appeared since Super Mario Bros. and their coloration may have inspired Deep Cheep's coloration.

History[edit ]

Super Mario series[edit ]

New Super Mario Bros.[edit ]

In New Super Mario Bros., Deep-Cheeps and their larger variants, the Mega Deep-Cheeps, only appear in World 6-5. They swim in a wavy pattern, but if approached, they move up or down toward Mario or Luigi until he passes them.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit ]

Mega Deep-Cheep and Deep-Cheep
A Deep-Cheep and a Mega Deep-Cheep in New Super Mario Bros. Wii

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii , Deep-Cheeps are slightly more common. One appears in World 1-4 along with a Mega Deep-Cheep. If Mario and co. keep staying in the area, another pair of green fish enemies appears. Deep-Cheeps can also be encountered in the second part of World 8-4.

In this game, their lips have become pink, matching the current depiction of a Cheep Cheep's, rather than keeping the red-orange colored lips they and Cheep Cheeps previously had in New Super Mario Bros. Their dorsal fins and tails have also become yellow, as opposed to white. They have an angry look on their face. There is a more relentless version of Deep-Cheeps known as Spiny Cheep-Cheeps, which have the same angry expression when angered.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit ]

Deep Cheeps reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2 , behaving and looking like they did in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They only appear in World Mushroom- 2.

New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit ]

Deep Cheeps in New Super Luigi U

Though Deep Cheeps do not appear in New Super Mario Bros. U (despite them receiving official artwork for that game), they still appear in New Super Luigi U , behaving the same as in previous games. Their only appearance is in Cheep Chomp Chase.

Super Mario Maker series[edit ]

See also: Cheep Cheep#Super Mario Maker series

In Super Mario Maker , Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS , and Super Mario Maker 2 , green Cheep Cheeps use the design of Deep Cheeps in the New Super Mario Bros. U game style (despite not appearing in the original game). Though sharing the design of Deep Cheeps, they do not chase Mario, swimming endlessly in a straight line like the green Cheep Cheeps in other gamestyles.

Mario Party 9[edit ]

In Mario Party 9 , a Deep-Cheep makes a minor appearance, swimming around Blooper Beach. It jumps out of the water at various intervals and may even jump over the player's vehicle. It has no effect on the gameplay.

Minecraft[edit ]

Minecraft asset
A Deep Cheep in Minecraft

In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in Minecraft , cod are reskinned to look like Deep Cheeps.

Dr. Mario World[edit ]

In Dr. Mario World , Deep Cheeps appear in the background of World 18 once an area has been cleared.

Mario Kart Tour[edit ]

The Green Cheep Charger from Mario Kart Tour resembles a Deep Cheep.

Unused appearances[edit ]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star contains an unused text string for Deep Cheeps.[3]

Names in other languages[edit ]

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "notes" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.
