Variants

Stone Spikes are a variant of Spikes that first appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii . They are blue in color and have green hair (the opposite of the color of normal Spikes). They are usually found in mountainous regions, throwing spiked balls made out of rock directly below them.

History[edit ]

Super Mario series[edit ]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit ]

Two Stone Spikes
Two Stone Spikes, one preparing to throw a spiked ball

Stone Spikes make their debut in New Super Mario Bros. Wii . Like normal Spikes, they can be defeated by any form of attack (though, like their normal counterparts, they cannot be jumped on while they are holding a stone ball over their heads). Unlike normal Spikes, however, Stone Spikes only throw their stone balls downwards, rather than forwards or backwards, with their projectiles briefly striking solid platforms before continuing their fall. A total of 11 Stone Spikes are found in World 6-1, and another 11 are encountered in World 8-4.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit ]

New Super Luigi U level.
Stone Spikes in New Super Luigi U

Stone Spikes reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U , New Super Luigi U , and the Nintendo Switch port comprised of both games. Starting from this game, their rocks are now colored dark brown as opposed to dark gray. A total of 23 Stone Spikes appear in Dry Desert Mushrooms in Layer-Cake Desert, while 13 are found in that level's equivalent in New Super Luigi U , Stone Spike Conveyors. Finally, 20 of them are encountered in the sixth special challenge, Nonstop Flight.

Mario Party: Island Tour[edit ]

Stone Spikes appear in Mario Party: Island Tour in the minigame Mad Ladders. Here they throw spiked balls down the cliffside as obstacles for the players.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit ]

Stone Spikes, alongside their parent species, Spikes, make their playable debut in a Super Mario sports game as selectable teammates in Mario Sports Superstars , being selectable in soccer and baseball. Their character type is Power, meaning that their shots are fast and powerful. A Mega Spike and Mega Stone Spike also appear as bosses in the Road to Superstar mode.

Mario Tennis series[edit ]

Mario Tennis Aces[edit ]

In Mario Tennis Aces , Stone Spikes are seen in the audience during tennis matches.

Mario Tennis Fever[edit ]

King Hisstocrat boss fight from Mario Tennis Fever
Stone Spikes in Mario Tenis Fever

In Mario Tennis Fever , Stone Spikes reappear as audience members at the Stadium Court. Additionally, Stone Spikes appear as enemies in the Foggy Swamp in the game's Adventure mode. In their first appearance, they launch boulders at the players which must be hit back at the tree trunks behind them in order to open the way forward. Boulders can also be hit back towards the Hisstocrats to temporarily stun them. In their following appearances, their boulders must be hit back at the Hisstocrats or King Hisstocrat in order to damage them.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit ]

Stone Spikes make their Paper Mario series debut as enemies in Paper Mario: The Origami King . In battle, their origami variants behave quite similarly to normal Spikes, albeit with slightly different damage outputs, and their spike balls can be jumped on without damaging Mario. A Paper Macho version also appears on ? Island guarding the Shangri-Spa Toad statue, and on Scuffle Island as one of the seven opponents.

A Stone Spike can Ground Pound Mario for 10-13 health, or throw a rock ball at him for 13-16 damage. Groups can do a Super Ground Pound which deals 16 damage for two Stone Spikes, 23-24 for three, 29-32 for four, 34-40 for five, or 38-48 for six. Hurly-Burly is a stacked move dealing a minimum 10 damage per Stone Spike, with the maximum increasing by three for every additional attacker. A Stone Spike can also pick up another enemy and throw it at Mario, damaging it in the process.

Dr. Mario World[edit ]

World 22 from Dr. Mario World
A Stone Spike in Dr. Mario World.

Stone Spikes appear in Dr. Mario World , being seen on areas of World 22 and World 29 after they have been cleared of Viruses.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit ]

In Mario Golf: Super Rush , Stone Spikes appear as minor NPCs in Golf Adventure.

Unused appearances[edit ]

In Paper Mario: Color Splash , there are three unused flags for a Stone Spike enemy card. One of the Spikes on the Sunset Express is referred to as a Stone Spike in its event flag, meaning they would have appeared in that level.[1]

Names in other languages[edit ]

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "notes" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.
