Meteors appear in the Super Mario franchise as hazardous objects that fall from the sky.
History[edit ]
Super Mario Bros. film[edit ]
In the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, it is the meteor that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs that separates Earth into two parallel dimensions; Earth and Dinohattan. While Dinosaurs become extinct on Earth, they prosper and evolve into intelligent beings in the Dinohattan dimension. Unfortunately, said dimension has poor resources and is compromised of almost entirely a barren, desolate desert. President Koopa gains control of the dimension through a military coup, with the intent of merging the two worlds. To do this, it is necessary to use a shard from the meteor to combine the worlds. Said piece of meteor plays a pivotal, key role in the movie.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat[edit ]
Meteors in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat appear in two sizes and are surrounded by blue fire. Large ones are used as projectiles by the Roc bosses, while small ones appear in Banshee Swamp, where they follow preset paths through the air, and Asteroid Belt, where they bounce around inside the first asteroid.
Super Mario series[edit ]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]
Meteors in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port and fall down towards planets, exploding when they hit the ground. If hit by one, Mario (or Luigi) will take damage. As they are supposed to fall out of the sky, they will not spawn if the player is looking directly at their spawn point in first-person view. Meteors first appear being shot from cannons by airships in the opening, and go on to appear in various galaxies, most of them associated with Bowser. Towards the end of Bowser's Star Reactor, Bowser himself can spit out meteors to destroy the staircase leading up to his boss arena. King Kaliente also summons meteors during the last phase of his rematch.
Meteors appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, meteors appear during all missions:

- Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor
- Melty Molten Galaxy ("Through the Meteor Storm")

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit ]
Meteors, also known as lava spheres,[1] are much rarer in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port, only appearing in two missions. In Hightail Falls Galaxy's Prankster Comet mission, "Hightail Falls Speed Run", they serve as an obstacle for Dash Yoshi while he runs across walls. In Shiverburn Galaxy's first mission, "Prince Pikante's Peppery Mood", they crash down onto ice floors, creating temporary lava pools. The same mission also introduces an icy meteor counterpart that creates icy platforms upon contact with lava.
Mario Party: Island Tour[edit ]
Meteors in Mario Party: Island Tour are obstacles that player characters have to avoid in the minigame Meteor Melee.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit ]
In Yoshi's Crafted World , meteors appear during the final boss battle against Mega Baby Bowser in the level The Great King Bowser, damaging Yoshi if they make direct contact with him. Additionally, one of the three level-specific challenges for the level is to strike the big meteorite with a hammer.
Princess Peach: Showtime![edit ]
Meteors appear in the three regular Mighty Peach stages in Princess Peach: Showtime! . Peach can charge at slowly incoming meteors to grab onto them, and can then throw them into other meteors, including multiple meteors within a straight path, to destroy them all. A few of the meteors have Sour Bunch members on top. If such meteors hit the ground, the members will simply land on the ground and walk towards Peach and/or Professor to damage them.
