This article is about the food. For the Thing from Paper Mario: Sticker Star, see Cake (Thing).
“Dear Mario, please come to the castle. I've baked a cake for you. Yours truly, Princess Toadstool, Peach.”
Princess Peach , Super Mario 64

Cakes in the Super Mario franchise are sweet, baked desserts often featured with more than one layer and usually decorated with cream and strawberries. Cakes are most commonly associated with Princess Peach, who sometimes bakes one for Mario after being rescued, or mentions cake in the prologue.

History[edit ]

Donkey Kong[edit ]

In some Atari ports for Donkey Kong , a birthday cake is one of Pauline's lost items.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit ]

Main article: Cake (boss)

A cake in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars appears in the form of a wedding cake that comes to life, whom the player has to fight as a boss. Booster eats the cake whole after it is defeated.

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[edit ]

Cake at the end of Super Mario 64 DS
The cake at the end of Super Mario 64 DS

A cake has somewhat of a role in Super Mario 64 and its Nintendo DS version. The game begins with an invitation letter from Princess Peach to Mario, which implies that she has baked a cake for him before she gets kidnapped. After Mario rescues her, she decides to thank him by baking a cake for him. The game's final scene shows a cake with two layers, with the words "Thank you" and statuettes of Mario and Princess Peach. The game stays on this screen until the player resets the system. In the remake, additional statuettes of the unlocked characters will appear on the cake at the end of the game. Unlike in the original, pressing any button in the end scene will return the player to the title screen.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

A cake in Super Mario Galaxy is what one of Toy Time Galaxy's planets is shaped like, on a plate. It is mandatory to go here in the third mission and "blow" out all of the candles using Mario's Spin move to create a Launch Star at the top. The inside of the cake can be entered via a Warp Pipe.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit ]

A cake in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is used in the introduction scene by Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, who hide in it to sneak into Princess Peach's birthday party and kidnap her. The cake is then used by the Koopalings to send Peach to an airship outside the castle.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit ]

A cake in Super Mario Galaxy 2 appears as an interactive element during the end credits. It is an altered version of the cake from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and it has several Fruits. A cake is also repeatedly mentioned by Bowser, who mentions that he wants Peach to make him a giant cake due to his large size. A cake is mentioned by Peach in her letter at the beginning, as she and Mario watch the Star Bits fall from the sky.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit ]

A cake in Super Mario Odyssey is in the Snow Kingdom, which has the Frost-Frosted Cake that was to act as the first prize for the Bound Bowl Grand Prix, although it ended up stolen by Bowser to have it act as his wedding cake for his and Princess Peach's marriage. The replacement for this was a Multi Moon. It was ultimately returned to its rightful owners, the Shiverians, after Bowser was defeated. Aside from this, cake was also mentioned in Mayor Pauline's quiz, where she mentions she liked cake, though she specified that it had to be "the good cake, not the packaged stuff."

Super Mario Run[edit ]

In Super Mario Run , Peach sent a letter to Mario inviting him to her castle for a party with cake. Bowser learned about this and said he would kidnap Peach and steal the cake, but the cake was never seen. Princess Peach's Cake is a special item that can be purchased in the Shop for Kingdom Builder mode. It costs 10,000 coins and is only available after the following requirements are completed:

Unlike other items, Princess Peach's Cake can only be placed in the center of the first area, directly in front of Peach's Castle. It is positioned over the crossroads. It cannot be put away once placed. When tapped, the cake does a short hop. The landing causes the screen to shake.

Wario Land II[edit ]

Cakes in Wario Land II are thrown by Cooks and initiate the Fat Wario transformation if eaten by Wario.

Mario Party series[edit ]

Mario Party[edit ]

One of the boards for Mario Party , Peach's Birthday Cake, is a large and elaborate birthday cake and Princess Peach's home board. In addition, Bowser's "gift" for passing him on this board is a Bowser Cake, which is a dud item that costs the player several coins. It is a spiked shell with frosting and candles, and cannot be eaten.

Mario Party 2[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party 2 appear in the minigame Cake Factory, where players have to put strawberries on the cakes until 30 seconds are up.

Mario Party 3[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party 3 appear in the minigame Game Guy's Sweet Surprise, where the player must guess which Chain Chomp will finish eating its cake first.

Mario Party 4[edit ]

A birthday cake in Mario Party 4 is an item that the player can obtain for the minigame room in the Present Room by clearing Beach Volley Folly in Battle Mode.

Mario Party 5[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party 5 appear in the board Sweet Dream, where whenever a player lands on a Happening Space on each cake, a knife will appear to slice a cake.

Mario Party 6[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party 6 appear in the minigame Strawberry Shortfuse, where they are placed on certain trays and have to be collected by the player characters while avoiding the trays with bombs.

Mario Party 8[edit ]

Sugar Rush from Mario Party 8

Cakes in Mario Party 8 appear in the minigame Sugar Rush, where players must recreate cakes by placing toppings in the correct spots.

Mario Party DS[edit ]

A cake in Mario Party DS is the setting for the minigame Cherry-Go-Round, though neither it nor the cakes in the background are interactive.

Mario Party: Island Tour[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party: Island Tour appear in the minigame Top This, where players have to put their toppings on various cakes.

Mario Party: Star Rush[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party: Star Rush appear in the minigame Piece of Cake, where players have to try to have their slice of cake match the one held by the Shy Guy.

Mario Party: The Top 100[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party: The Top 100 appear in two returning minigames, Cake Factory and Strawberry Shortfuse.

Mario Party Superstars[edit ]

Cakes in Mario Party Superstars return in not only the Mario Party 2 minigame Cake Factory, but the Peach's Birthday Cake board, alongside the Bowser Cake, which Bowser says is made of rock.

Game & Watch Gallery series[edit ]

In the Modern version of Mario Bros. , which appears in Game & Watch Gallery 3 and Game & Watch Gallery 4 , Mario and Luigi work at an outdoor cake factory. Cakes come out of a pipe on the right and move across Conveyor Belts. Mario and Luigi must meet the cakes at the ends of the Conveyor Belts to move them to the next one.

Paper Mario series[edit ]

Cakes in the Paper Mario series exist in many variations that can be prepared by the cooks, including Choco Cake, Couple's Cake, Fruity Cake, Mousse Cake, Mushroom Cake, Nutty Cake, and Strange Cake.

Paper Mario[edit ]

Paper Mario description A tasty cake baked by Tayce T. Restores 15 FP.

In Paper Mario , if Mario reclaims Tayce T.'s Frying Pan from the Pink Station area of Shy Guy's Toy Box and returns it to her, the cook will prepare him a Cake. After Mario receives this Cake, Tayce T. mentions that she baked a Cake to win over her nameless, now late husband, rendering the making of Cakes troublesome for her. Of note is that this backstory is extremely similar to the one given for Wonky and his story about Zess T.'s Couple's Cake in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door . Regardless, she will bake additional Cakes for Mario when he brings her Cake Mixes, which can be found in the Shy Guys' playground in the Blue Station area of Shy Guy's Toy Box (west of a hallway with Anti Guy). A Cake restores fifteen FP and sells for the most at Star Haven, where it can be sold for fifteen coins.

In Shy Guy's Toy Box, Gourmet Guy, who is blocking a railroad crossing in the Pink Station area, craves a Cake and will not budge until Mario gives him one. Mario must bring him a Cake baked by Tayce T., and when Gourmet Guy eats it, he will jump around the area before flying offscreen, clearing the crossing for Mario to progress (and dropping a Cookbook in the process).

During an intermission after Chapter 4, Peach is required to bake a Special Strawberry Cake for Gourmet Guy.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit ]

A cake in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is delivered to Mario in the Glitz Pit by a fan of his. If Mario and his partner eat it, it will refill all of the party's stats. If Mario decides not to consume it, Shellshock will eat it instead, boasting about how good the cake was. Later, a "fan" of Mario tries to send him a Poisoned Cake. If Mario and his partner eat it, the latter gets sick, forcing Mario to fight his next opponent alone. If Mario decides not to consume it, Shellshock will eat it and get sick instead.

Goombella's tattle on Prince Mush in the remake reveals that he is not fond of cake, with it being implied that it stemmed from falling for Rawk Hawk's Poisoned Cake trick in the past.

Mario Kart series[edit ]

A slice of cake, simply known as the Cake in Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 is one of Peach's special items. Upon being used, it removes all bad conditions from the user's kart, such as square tires, burst tires, or Thunder Cloud. In addition, the Cake provides a shield for approximately half a second upon being used. With good timing, this can be used to block incoming items or be immune to the explosion of a Time Bomb.

The Cake in Mario Kart Arcade GP has an unlockable variant, the Cake+, which greatly increases the duration of the shield the item provides.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit ]

Cakes in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its Nintendo 3DS version appear briefly during Bowser's battle against Midbus in Fawful Theater, where they are occasionally thrown at Midbus from the audience, restoring 20 of his HP if he manages to consume one. Bowser can punch them or inhale them before they are eaten by Midbus; in the latter case, Bowser will recover 20 of his own HP instead. Cakes of various types are also seen in the "Victory Feast" sequence. Lastly, a cake in the ending is delivered to Bowser by Birdley on behalf of Princess Peach.

Princess Peach: Showtime![edit ]

The three Patissiere Peach stages in Princess Peach: Showtime! have her decorate pre-baked cakes with frosting, being judged on time limits and on design.
