“Can you beat those Gringills by hitting them with shells?”
Penguin , Super Mario Galaxy

Gringills are enemies in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 . These huge orange eels have large eyes and teeth. Much like Maw-Rays, they attack by trying to bite Mario or Luigi. Gringills can be defeated by throwing a Koopa Shell at them. An even larger version called Big Gringill also exists.

History[edit ]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

In Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port, Gringills come in two varieties, being ones in caves and ones that swim freely. Caved ones' behavior also has two variations: Some become visible only if Mario (or Luigi) gets close, at which point they emerge and bite whenever he approaches but remain visible in their caves regardless; others constantly emerge, bite, and retract regardless of what Mario does. Free-swimming Gringills always swim in wide, medium-speed loops similarly to the Sushi enemy in Super Mario 64 . The latter type is the focus of "Giant Eel Outbreak", where Mario must defeat three Gringills that are menacing the Drip Drop Galaxy.

Gringills appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Gringills appear during all missions:

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit ]

In Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port, Gringills are a lot less common, with only the caved versions making occasional appearances. They appear during the Cosmic Cove Galaxy's second mission, where they emerge when approached, and during both missions of Slimy Spring Galaxy, where they emerge when approached.

Mario must fight these gigantic eel-like creatures in several galaxies — some enemies just don't know when to quit. Gringills can be defeated by throwing a Koopa shell at them while underwater.

Naming[edit ]

Etymology[edit ]

The "grin" part in "Gringill" is likely in reference to the enemy's exposed teeth. It is one of the few discrete names to be mentioned directly in Super Mario Galaxy, in which penguins apply it to the enemy during "Giant Eel Outbreak". In the original Japanese release, they instead nondescriptly refer to it as an「アナゴ」(anago, "conger").[1] The enemy is more specifically referred to by the respective common names for whitespotted congers in the Korean and Simplified Chinese localizations. It is generically referred to as an "eel" in most of the non-English European localizations.[2] [3] [4] The North American and Italian localizations of Super Mario Galaxy refer to the enemy by discrete names.

The European French version of the Prima Games guidebook refers to the enemy by its Canadian French name, Anguillon, which was followed suit in the guidebook for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia . The Italian name, Pesce Boa, may be a deliberate connection to the initial intent to base Gringills on snakeheads, as conveyed by the internal file designations for the enemy. The German name Schlangenfisch, introduced in the Prima Games guidebook for Super Mario Galaxy 2, has similar connotations.

Names in other languages[edit ]

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "Note(s)" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.
