The Red Star is an item debuting in Super Mario Galaxy . It transforms Mario (or Luigi) into Flying Mario. It has a thinner shape than Power Stars, with small spheres at each of its five points, and it holds the power of the Red Lumas.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]
In Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port, a Red Luma first gives Mario a Red Star during "Gateway's Purple Coins" in the Gateway Galaxy. Touching it transforms him into Flying Mario, granting him the ability to fly through the air, similar to Wing Mario in Super Mario 64 . Unlike Wing Mario, Flying Mario can propel himself instead of only glide.
After the player completes the mission, two Red Stars appear at the Comet Observatory, where they can be freely used by Mario. One is located at the entrance to the Garage and the other on top of the Bedroom.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[edit ]
A Red Star appears in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , in the final battle between Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi against Bowser and Bowser Jr.. During the battle, Mario hits a ? Block, causing the Red Star to appear. Using it, he transforms into Flying Mario and battles the Ruined Dragon created by Bowser Jr.

Notes[edit ]
- This is the only power-up not to be listed in the Super Mario Galaxy instruction booklet, probably because it is introduced near the end of the game.
- The Red Star is one of two power-ups not to return in Super Mario Galaxy 2 , the other being the Ice Flower. However, like with the Ice Flower, the Red Star's theme returns, and is updated to match the other power-ups. Unlike the Ice Flower, though, Flying Mario is complete on the disc, suggesting it was cut very late in development. In fact, to use the Red Star, the player simply has to disable the "event table" for obtaining a power-up for the first time.[2]
