Polari, Super Mario Galaxy

Polari is an elderly, brownish black Luma who serves as Rosalina's butler and trusted advisor in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port. Having extensive knowledge of the Comet Observatory, he serves as a guide to Mario, showing him a map of all of the galaxies visible from that location and teaching him how to use the Star Pointer. Uniquely, Polari's name is never mentioned in Super Mario Galaxy, appearing only in the instruction booklet.

The relationship between Polari and Rosalina is somewhat comparable to the one between Toadsworth and Princess Peach in other titles. He is the only Luma of his color, a potential allusion to black dwarfs. He is one of the Lumas that accompanies Rosalina in the Super Smash Bros. series, as explicitly denoted in the Tips.

General information[edit ]

Physical description[edit ]

Polari, unlike all other known Lumas, is a blackish brown color and has sky blue eyes. Aside from this unique coloration, he is relatively the same size as all other Lumas, excluding the larger ones like Hungry Lumas, Lumalee, and Comet Luma [derived].

Personality[edit ]

Polari shows certain similarities to Toadsworth: both are older members of their respective species, they are highly protective of the person they advise, and they have a coloration that noticeably deviates from the typical color schemes of their respective species. Polari is also shown to be wise, with his knowledge proving useful to Mario on his adventure, such as telling Mario information about the galaxies in each of the domes.

Just like all other Lumas, Polari loves to consume Star Bits, and he may thank the player if they shoot a Star Bit at him. Compared to the Lumas and the joyful sound that they emit when happy or excited (such as when they consume Star Bits), Polari's voice is deeper and he emits a distinctly different sound upon consuming Star Bits.

History[edit ]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

Rosalina and Polari
Polari with Rosalina

Polari first appears in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port when Mario retrieves the first Grand Star and lands on the Comet Observatory. He looks at the beacon with Rosalina and exclaims that "now the poor Lumas may survive". When the player first enters the Terrace they will meet Polari and a Blue Luma that soon transforms into a Pull Star to allow Mario to travel to galaxies. When Mario returns with one Power Star on his belt, Polari will teach him about Star Bits and how Lumas love eating them. Other than that, Polari's main importance within the game is to provide a map of all the galaxies that Mario can visit and their Power Stars and to inform Mario about when the enemy base has been located.

It is unknown what happens to Polari at the end of the game; he is not seen flying into the giant black hole, and in the secret ending, he does not appear alongside Rosalina or in the Comet Observatory at all.

Super Mario-kun[edit ]

Polari also appears in the Super Mario-kun manga's Super Mario Galaxy arc (volumes 38–40). Compared to his appearance in Super Mario Galaxy, his age is much more apparent because of his wrinkles. In volume 40, he grows into the final Grand Star, in contrast to his navigator role in Super Mario Galaxy.

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit ]

Polari makes a cameo appearance in Mario Golf: World Tour in Rosalina's best post- hole animations.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS , Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , when Rosalina re-spawns a Luma, there is a chance for Polari to appear. Although the tips in the latter two games confirm that it is Polari (referring to him by name in-game for the first time), he shares the same voice clips with the other playable Lumas instead of reusing his voice clips from Super Mario Galaxy.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit ]

Polari appears in Mario Sports Superstars , where he fulfills the same role he has in Mario Golf: World Tour.

Naming[edit ]

Etymology[edit ]

The English name "Polari" likely derives from "Polaris," the astronomical name of the North Star. Polari is uniquely named only in the instruction booklet for Super Mario Galaxy , not in the game itself. The sole instance where the character is specifically denoted is during a Star Pointer tutorial towards the beginning of the game, in which only an icon (Polari) is applied to him. The first published game to mention the character by name is Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS , in a Tip for Rosalina & Luma. The tip is subsequently included in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate . Across all localizations of these titles, the only one to not mention Polari by name is Portuguese.

Names in other langauges[edit ]

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "notes" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.

Notes[edit ]

  • When Mario first lands on the Comet Observatory, Polari does not accept Star Bits, and any Star Bit flung at him by the cursor will simply bounce off Polari.
    • Polari accepts them once Mario enters the Terrace for the first time, but he stays silent and does not give one of his usual responses like, "Mwah! ♪" Polari can be fed with Star Bits normally once Mario collects the Power Star from Dino Piranha.
