Giant Star Bit

Giant Star Bits^[1] are semi-common blue-tinted crystal objects in Super Mario Galaxy , Super Mario Galaxy 2 , and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 . They appear more often in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port than in its predecessor. They are most commonly seen floating in space directly in the path of a Launch Star. When Mario or Luigi flies through the path, he smashes right through the giant Star Bit, releasing multiple separate Star Bits that circle around him and can be collected with the Star Pointer until he lands on the next planet. In one instance in both the Space Junk Galaxy and Bubble Blast Galaxy, a giant crystal is instead given the giant Star Bit's role.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, giant Star Bits can sometimes be found floating just above the ground, though this is extremely rare, as this happens during only one mission in the Melty Monster Galaxy. In this mission, the giant Star Bits will be destroyed if they are hit by Rock Mario or Rock Luigi. These giant Star Bits produce only four Star Bits when broken. These clusters can also be broken by the Co-Star Luma's spin.

It is also possible to break a giant Star Bit by using Mario or Luigi's spin, although under normal gameplay this can be done only in the Cloudy Court Galaxy's first mission as Cloud Mario/Luigi.

Three giant Star Bits also appear on the World Map: one near the end of World 1, and two at the beginning of World 2. The player can maneuver Starship Mario into these giant Star Bits in order to break them and release the eight Star Bits inside.
