Whimps[1] are enemies in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port. They are miniature Whomps that serve a similar role to them as Thwimps do to Thwomps. Unlike normal Whomps, they have only one tooth; their faces are also flatter, their bodies are less rectangular, and they have cubed forearms. They appear in only one mission—the Throwback Galaxy mission "Return of the Whomp King"—assisting the Whomp King in his battle against the player. In the second and third phases of the battle, the Whomp King stomps a foot to make three (five in the third phase) Whimps break off from the ground. After that, the Whimps instantly start chasing after the player. Once they get close enough, they jump and land flat on their faces, attempting to crush Mario or Luigi. All Whimps disappear when the Whomp King tries to crush the player. Whimps are more fragile and less damaging than regular Whomps, taking only a point of the player's health if they land on Mario or Luigi. They also disintegrate after performing an attack, regardless of if they are successful. The player can knock back a Whimp by doing a spin, or defeat it by performing a jump or Ground Pound. When defeated with a Ground Pound, the Whimp drops a single coin.

Naming[edit ]

Etymology[edit ]

The name "Whimp" is a portmanteau of "Whomp" and "wimp," a derogative term for someone perceived as weak. The nominal relationship between "Whomp" and "Whimp" mirrors the one between "Thwomp" and "Thwimp."

When Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released in 2010, no English name was published for this enemy. It is not mentioned or described in the enemy index or description for the Whomp King boss battle in the Prima Games guidebook for the game.[2] The earliest published use of "Whimp" was as the conjectural title for its article on the Super Mario Wiki in May 2010. The name "Whimp" subsequently appears in the 2018 English edition of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia .[3] Because this name had no known use in any officially licensed published material and similar issues elsewhere in the encyclopedia, the use of "Whimp" in this source is potentially a consequence of circular reporting. In 2022, "Whimp" was later used for the enemy on the English version of Mario Portal, substantiating it as an independently attested English name for the enemy.
