Fruits in the Super Mario franchise are a type of botanical, naturally produced food that hangs in trees and bushes and usually bears seeds inside it. Many kinds of fruit grow in the wild or on cultivated land, from real-world ones such as apples, bananas, and watermelons to fictional ones such as the red fruits that debuted in Super Mario World and the Heart Fruits from Yoshi's Story .

History[edit ]

Donkey Kong franchise[edit ]

Fruit appears throughout the Donkey Kong franchise, mainly bananas, which are the most common collectible item within the whole series.

Fruit (also called Fruit Bombs)^[1] first appears in Donkey Kong Jr. , where it is used as a weapon. This fruit plummets downward upon impact with Donkey Kong Jr., and it defeats any enemies it lands on. This fruit also appears in the Forest in Donkey Kong for the Game Boy and Donkey Kong Jungle in Mario vs. Donkey Kong , as well as Boss Game 2 and Boss Game 8 in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis .

Fruit is more prevalent in Donkey Kong 64 , where every Kong (except for Tiny Kong) uses fruit as ammo from their personal weapon. Aside from that, the active Kong's current health is measured in watermelons, and oranges are ammunition acting just like grenades.

In Donkey Kong Jungle Beat , large fruits appear as the goal of each stage, with the type of fruit depending on the kingdom's name.

Super Mario series[edit ]

Fruits make their first appearance in the Super Mario series in Super Mario Bros. 2 , in the form of Cherries floating in the air.

Later, fruits (known as berries) appear in Super Mario World, where Red and Green Berries hang from bushes. Yoshi can eat these fruits to gain extra points. The fruits act the same way later in New Super Mario Bros. Wii .

In Super Mario Sunshine , various types of fruit appear in most levels. Fruits are mainly used to feed a Yoshi. A Yoshi egg will hatch only if the Yoshi's requested fruit is carried to him. If the Yoshi does not eat a fruit every few minutes or so, his juice meter will empty and he will go back into his egg. The Yoshi's color depends on the fruit he eats: If he eats a papaya or pineapple, he will be orange; if he eats bananas or a coconut, he will be pink; and if he eats a durian or pepper, he will be purple. Watermelons also make an appearance during the Watermelon Festival at Gelato Beach, where they are extremely large and very fragile; the Piantas hold a watermelon size contest and make watermelon smoothies during the festival.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2 , along with the normal red fruits, there are three special types of fruit: the Dash Pepper (a red pepper that transforms Yoshi into Dash Yoshi), the Blimp Fruit (a blue berry that turns Yoshi into Blimp Yoshi), and the Bulb Berry (a yellow pear-like berry that transforms Yoshi into Bulb Yoshi).

In Super Mario Odyssey , red fruits can be consumed by Yoshi when captured by Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Yoshi series[edit ]

Fruits (referred to as "Super Happy Tree Fruits" in a preview)^[2] also appear in Yoshi's Story , where each Yoshi has a fruit as their favorite food. If a Yoshi eats 30 fruits, they will advance to the next level. Fruits can often be found floating around in bubbles. After a Yoshi eats a fruit, it appears in the Yoshi's Fruit Frame. There are 60 fruits in each stage of the game: 30 melons, 12 Lucky Fruits, and 18 "ordinary" fruits. If 30 fruits are eaten in more than one kind, a smiling heart appears in the background.

Fruit slices appear in Yoshi's Woolly World as the main collectibles in the Bonus Game. One of the fruits is kiwi, which has not previously appeared in the franchise. The Bonus Game is removed in Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World , a port of the game, meaning the fruit slices are not present.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]

In the Super Smash Bros. series, fruits appear as one of the food items. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS , fruits appear on the Tortimer Island stage, where trees bear them. Attacking trees that bear fruits makes the fruits fall down, allowing players to grab them to recover health. Unlike the other fruits, Coconuts that appear are not edible and can instead be used as a throwing item.

Mario & Luigi series[edit ]

Another kind of fruit appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake, named Bean Fruit.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time , a fruit resembling an Apple was found inside Yoob's Belly. This fruit, aptly named "Fruit," was given to a Yellow Yoshi to help him regain the strength needed to help move a Chomp Rock. The in-game description reads, "Fresh and juicy! Yoshi's favorite."

Mario Sports Mix[edit ]

In Mario Sports Mix , fruit is one of the objects that needs to be fed to Petey Piranha in the party game Feed Petey.

Nintendo Land[edit ]

Fruit appears as a central element of the Yoshi's Fruit Cart attraction in Nintendo Land . In it, the Yoshi Cart must eat every fruit in a stage before being able to complete it. Fruit also replenishes the Yoshi Cart's fuel, and grants it bonus points in the form of eggs. Some fruit come with a Number Flag attached, requiring they be eaten in order. Fruit comes in three sizes: Bananas, melons and watermelons are large, apples, grapes and peaches are medium-sized, and oranges, pears and strawberries are small.
