Peppers, also called Chili Peppers[1] (or chili peppers),[2] appear in the Super Mario franchise as interactive spicy fruits.

History[edit ]

Yoshi's Story[edit ]

Peppers in Yoshi's Story are fruits generally disliked by Yoshis due to their spicy properties. If a pepper is consumed by a Yoshi, it sticks its tongue out in disgust and loses a petal from its Smile Meter. If the player Yoshi is Super Happy and performs a Ground Pound while a pepper is onscreen, the fruit turns into a single coin, though the effect ends prematurely if a Yoshi eats a pepper while in this state. The Black Yoshi and White Yoshi seem to be fond of peppers, since they do not take damage from them.

Super Mario Sunshine[edit ]

Peppers in Super Mario Sunshine are among the types of the fruit located in Delfino Plaza. If a Yoshi eats one, it turns purple, allowing it to spit juice of the same color that turns enemies into forward-moving purple Yoshi Platforms. Peppers are the only fruit that Yoshis never ask for to hatch out of their eggs. Peppers have an essential role while King Boo is being battled in that throwing a pepper at his tongue stuns him, allowing Mario to damage him with another fruit.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book[edit ]

Peppers appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book as one of the types of fruit that Yoshi can eat or feed to creatures. When Yoshi eats a pepper, he sticks his tongue out in distress similarly to in Yoshi's Story, although it does not harm him due to the game's lack of a health system. Additionally, Yoshi is able to briefly run atop bodies of water after consuming a pepper. Creatures react in a number of ways to being fed a pepper, with most having their abilities enhanced in some way, and many of them turning red after eating it. Crazee Dayzees turn red after eating one and will grow more peppers if they bloom flowers. Bunchabees gain the ability to break rocks with their attacks after consumption. Croakaokes scream in shock and hop around after consumption. Glubbits blow red, bursting bubbles after consumption. Peckadees gain more force while thrown upon consumption, being able to smash through targets. Bafloonders gain spikes upon consumption and can break other objects. Nep-Enuts turn into spicy liquid after consumption. Little Mousers react with disgust upon consumption and stop moving until revived with water. Mawstalks get bigger upon consumption and gain the ability to slash through foliage. Wooshwings glide much faster after consumption. Huffin Puffins gain the ability to slash through foliage after consumption. Yu Ef Ohs fly with great speed for a short while after sucking up a pepper.
