A Freezie (alternatively spelled Freezy),[1] [2] originally known as a Slipice and also known as an icicle[3] or ice,[4] [page number needed] is an enemy made entirely of ice that first appeared in the arcade game Mario Bros. Freezies (alternatively pluralized Freezys)[5] [6] vary greatly in size and shape, but each has a distinct puzzled expression. Occasionally, Freezies are used as items to freeze enemies.

History[edit ]

Mario Bros.[edit ]

Slipice or Freezie
Original appearance in the arcade version

In the arcade game Mario Bros., Freezies emerge from pipes and travel along the floors, just like other enemies. They first appear in Phase 9 (Phase 10 in Japan). When a Freezie reaches the center of a platform, it coats the entire platform with ice, destroying itself in the process. A frozen platform is very slippery, meaning that Mario and Luigi should eliminate these enemies quickly. It can freeze the central floating platform and the two lower platforms above the bottom pipes. If all three platforms are frozen, no more Freezies appear for that phase. Hitting a Freezie from below destroys it and awards the player five hundred points. Freezies do not count as regular enemies, meaning Mario and Luigi do not have to clear them from the stage to complete the level. If Mario or Luigi touch a Freezie, they lose a life; unlike most enemies, Freezies only reverse direction if they bump into another enemy, which is the only way they can reach and freeze the upper platforms.

Freezie is the only recurring enemy from Mario Bros. to have kept its Nintendo Entertainment System name instead of its original arcade name.

The artwork for the port on the Atari 2600 depicts it as more of a fish-like creature, while the Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten depicts it as a bamboo shoot made of ice.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]

SmashWiki article: Freezie

Freezies are used as items in the Super Smash Bros. series, starting with Super Smash Bros. Melee . In these games, they have a wider, more rounded design than in the Super Mario games. When a Freezie appears, it slides across the stage until it is picked up by a character, falls off the stage, or is broken. Freezies in Melee break after a single attack is used on them, provided the attack does damage, while the ones in Brawl are a bit more resilient.

Upon being picked up, the Freezie can then be thrown at an opponent, encasing the opponent in a block of ice. While frozen, the opponent is defenseless for a few seconds, allowing other characters to attack the incapacitated foe. The larger the opponent's damage, the longer they are trapped. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a Freezie that hits an opponent makes the same sound effect as a defeated Freezie in Mario Bros. If an opponent is knocked-out by a thrown Freezie in Melee, the player receives a "Freezie KO" Bonus. Additionally, the Freezie appears as a collectible trophy.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , a Freezie appears as a support spirit.

Mario Kart series[edit ]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit ]

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!! , large, stationary Freezies (also referred to as Icelings)[7] are located on the ice lake at the end of the Sherbet Land course. If a character drives into a Freezie, their kart becomes frozen in a chunk of ice for a few seconds. After being hit (by kart or item), a Freezie slides along the ground until it hits a wall and shatters. However, a sliding Freezie can still freeze any karts that it runs into.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit ]

Freezie from Mario Kart 8
A Freezie in Mario Kart 8

In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , Freezies retain their role as hazards in the classic course GCN Sherbet Land, although they appear static on the track. Freezies no longer freeze drivers when driven into and break upon being hit, causing the player to spin out if hit at high speeds. Additionally, their eyes and mouth are now white and appear to be carved in their bodies.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit[edit ]

Freezies return in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit as obstacles in Freezie Frosts. They can appear with the falling snow, and freeze racers upon contact like in Mario Kart: Double Dash!![8] Freezies retain their appearance from Mario Kart 8.

Mario Kart World[edit ]

Freezies appear again in Mario Kart World , retaining their appearance from Mario Kart 8. Hitting one only causes the Freezie to break and the driver to spin out, like in Mario Kart 8. In Free Roam, Freezies can be found on the snowy region between Sky-High Sundae and Wario Shipyard, which are also surrounded by ice mountains resembling Freezies. In Grand Prix, Freezies are encountered in the first lap towards Wario Shipyard in the Star Cup.

Mario Party series[edit ]

Frozen Assets from Mario Party 8
The Freezie from Mario Party 8

Freezies do not often appear in the Mario Party series. In Mario Party 6 , during the night at Snowflake Lake, Freezies block players from accessing other paths. In the Mario Party 8 minigame Frozen Assets, Freezie rises and then slams back down onto the icy arena, causing large icicles with gems to fall onto the ground.

Mario Pinball Land[edit ]

The second room in Frosty Frontier Stage.
The Freezie from Mario Pinball Land

In Mario Pinball Land , a Freezie appears in the Frosty Frontier Stage. On the second screen of this stage, a Freezie can be found sitting in the middle of the screen while penguins walk around it. Mario must hit this Freezie, pushing the ice creature over a crack in the ice. This creates a hole that leads to the boss area.

Mario Power Tennis[edit ]

Freezies appear as a rare obstacle in Mario Power Tennis . On the Mario Classic Court stage, the original sprites for Freezies and other enemies are used (instead of modern sprites). When playing a Gimmick Match, Freezies occasionally slide onto the court and freeze half of a character's play area. Hitting the POW Block stops it.

Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix[edit ]

Freezie from Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix
A large Freezie as seen in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

Freezies reappear in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix . In this game, a large Freezie is the boss of World 4 and is the keeper of the fourth Music Key, with the key being lodged inside the Freezie's head. This large Freezie resides on the top of a snow-capped mountain and is surrounded by normal Freezies. When Mario (or Luigi) and Toad arrive to retrieve the key, Toad asks the large Freezie to return the Music Key, and the Freezie does not respond. As such, Toad tells Mario to melt the giant icicle with his "burning hot dance moves." As the player starts dancing, the large Freezie attempts to block the player's dance steps with ice and the player counters this by activating Fire Flowers on the beat. Once the player finishes the song the large Freezie melts away and Mario recovers the final Music Key. The music playing in this battle, "Deep Freeze," is a remix of "Fever" from Dr. Mario .

Super Princess Peach[edit ]

Freezies appear in the Gleam Glacier levels of Super Princess Peach . Peach must use her Rage to melt and pass Freezies. Like other roadblocking enemies, they are absent from the in-game Glossary.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3[edit ]

In Mario Hoops 3-on-3 , Freezies are items exclusive to the Sherbet Land court. A character can sometimes grab a Freezie from a ? Panel and throw it at an opponent. If the target is hit, they become frozen temporarily.

Mario Super Sluggers[edit ]

Screenshot of Peach Ice Garden during the day
Freezies, as seen at Peach Ice Garden

In Mario Super Sluggers , Freezies appear as stage hazards in Peach Ice Garden, sliding around on the ice. One is also seen crashing into Toad while he is trying to catch a baseball in the game's introductory cut scene. Fortunately for Toad, Blue Toad appears and accidentally slips, crashing into the Freezie and freeing Toad.

Super Mario series[edit ]

Freezies have not been directly encountered in any game of the Super Mario series. However, in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury , Freezies appear in the additional game Luigi Bros. , a mode based on Mario Bros., with Freezies retaining their role from said game. A Freezie makes a cameo in Super Mario Maker since version 1.20 where if the player presses and holds +Control Pad up while wearing the Fighter Fly costume, it becomes a Freezie.

LEGO Super Mario[edit ]

A Freezie is one of the figures in Series 4 of the Character Packs in the LEGO Super Mario line of merchandise, as well as in the Fliprus Snow Adventure set.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit ]

In the Golf Adventure story mode of Mario Golf: Super Rush , Freezies appear in the snow-covered sections of Bowser Highlands. They act as stationary obstacles that block the golf ball's path to the hole. A Freezie can be destroyed by putting a Bob-omb at them, which gives the player a coin. One of the Snow King's attacks during his boss fight has him summon Freezies and slide them in the player's direction. If the player gets hit by a Freezie, their body temperature decreases. Freezies retain their black eyes and mouth from games prior to Mario Kart 8.

Unused appearances[edit ]

Dr. Mario World[edit ]

A Freezie was originally going to appear in Dr. Mario World as an assistant, but it was removed from the game. It retains its design from before Mario Kart 8. [9]

Freezies slip and slide along smooth surfaces and will happily slide off the edge of a stage if left alone. In Mario Bros., they would stop and freeze portions of the ground; in Super Smash Bros. An item that freezes people. If you're frozen, you can't lift a finger to defend yourself. You can break out of ice by shaking the Control Stick back and forth. Hit someone with a Freezie, and you'll hear a delightful sound declaring your success, but frozen enemies don't fly very far. Freezies tend to break easily when carried.

Use this item to make a game of freeze tag chillingly literal. Once thrown, the first character to touch the Freezie will be frozen solid, turning into an easy target for a beating. If you happen to be on the receiving end, it's time to try to move around quickly to warm yourself up! (American English)
This item will slide along the ground until someone picks it up. Then the first person it hits will get frozen in a block of ice and be a sitting duck for any attacks that come their way. Careful, though – if you attack a Freezie and make it break, you might get frozen yourself! If that happens, do some wiggling around to get free! (British English)
