Taunt
Taunting is an action in the Mario Party series, Mario Golf series, Mario Tennis series, and Super Smash Bros. series. Taunts typically do not have direct gameplay impact but serve to annoy or cheer on the players. In the Mario Party series, each character has a taunt—however, in Mario Party 6 , Mario Party 7 , and Mario Party 8 , it is unlockable. In the Mario Golf series, when an opponent is about to hit a ball, the player can taunt the opponent, though this also has no in-game effect. If one human player is playing against another human, the taunt may distract the other player. The player can also cheer for the opponents in the Mario Golf series.

Mario Party 2[edit ]
Mario Party 2 allows players to taunt if they press L Button during an opponent's turn. The taunt is a simple cheer by the character, which is a voice shared for various positive reactions, such as winning a mini-game.
Mario Party 3[edit ]
Like in Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3 allows players to taunt if they press L Button during an opponent's turn. The taunt is a unique voice clip also used when the character rides the Mushroom Genie after using a Magic Lamp, as well as when the character makes their entrance in the game's story mode. Additionally, on the game's title screen, all of the taunts play simultaneously.
Mario Party 4[edit ]
Mario Party 4 allows players to taunt if they press L Button during an opponent's turn. Exclusive to Mario Party 4, players can distort the taunt with C Stick and Control Stick.[1] Tilting the stick up pitch-shifts higher while tilting the stick down pitch-shifts lower. Tilting the stick to the left shifts the taunt to the left speaker, while tilting the stick to the right shifts the taunt to the right speaker. The distortions can apply throughout the voice clip, so players can heavily distort the voice by moving the stick rapidly. The taunt is a simple cheer by the character, which is a voice shared for various positive reactions, such as receiving an item.
Mario Party 5[edit ]
Mario Party 5 features taunting similar to previous games, also triggered with L Button, with reused cheering voices from Mario Party 4. Unlike in Mario Party 4, the taunt cannot be distorted.
Mario Party 6[edit ]
In Mario Party 6 , the taunts for each character can be bought individually with Stars at the Star Bank. After the taunt is unlocked, players can press the L Button button on the GameCube Controller to trigger their character's taunt during Party Mode. Most characters have new recordings, and the taunts' voices are reused in Mario Party 7 .

Mario Party 7[edit ]
In Mario Party 7 , there is an unlockable feature known as "Annoy Mode", which causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode when they press the L Button button on the GameCube Controller. The voice clips heard vary by character, and most of them are reused from Mario Party 6. To unlock it, the player must purchase it for 500 Cruise Mileage Points at the Duty-Free Shop.
Mario Party 8[edit ]
In Mario Party 8 , there is an unlockable feature known as "Heckling Voices", which causes the player's character to taunt during Party Mode when they shake the Wii Remote. The voice clips heard vary by character, but each character has two voice clips, one of which is known as "Boo" in the Carnival Calliope Character Voices. Heckling Voices costs fifty Carnival Cards at the Fun Bazaar.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]
Taunting is a feature in every game of the Super Smash Bros. series, with each fighter having unique taunts they can perform during gameplay. In Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee , each fighter has only one taunt, but starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl , they have three taunts each (an up taunt, side taunt, and down taunt). The majority of taunts have no gameplay purpose, though there are several exceptions (such as Luigi's down taunt, which deals damage). In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , taunts can be canceled faster than in previous games by performing another action, and many taunt animations from the previous games were sped up or shortened.
Usage of taunts is restricted in some online modes. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U 's "With Anyone" mode, each player can use up to two taunts per match, but KOing another player increases the limit by one. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's "Quickplay" mode, no taunts can be used at all (with the exception of Kirby using a taunt to discard a Copy Ability).

Mario [edit ]
- Up taunt:
- Prior to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: He assumes his stance from Super Mario Bros. and grows twice his size (while the classic "Power-Up" sound effect plays) for a brief moment, then shrinks back to normal (while the classic "Power-Down" sound effect plays). This is Mario's only taunt prior to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: He makes a thumbs-up gesture accompanied by a sound effect. Resembles a piece of Club Nintendo artwork.
- Side taunt:
- Prior to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: He twirls and removes his hat while saying "Woohoo!" Similar to his animation upon clearing a course in New Super Mario Bros.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: He throws and catches Cappy while saying "Woohoo!"
- Down taunt: He spins in midair and falls to the ground, a reference to his defeat animation from the original Donkey Kong game. The animation is faster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Donkey Kong [edit ]
- Up taunt: He rapidly pounds his chest with his fists. This taunt is faster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Side taunt: He shakes himself as if wet. This taunt is faster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Down taunt: He looks to the camera, shrugging and letting out a grunt. This is Donkey Kong's only taunt prior to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Yoshi [edit ]
- Up taunt: He dances around in a circle, shouting "Yoshi!" as he finishes. This taunt is slightly shorter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Side taunt: He chases his tail in circles.
- Down taunt: He jumps up and down, waving his arms and chanting. In the original Super Smash Bros., he spins at the start. This is Yoshi's only taunt prior to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Luigi [edit ]
- Up taunt: A series of stand-still poses in quick succession: he holds up two fingers, then performs finger guns, then thinks with a finger under his nose, then crouches with his back turned, then puts his hands to his cheeks in fright (similar to his artwork from Luigi's Mansion ).
- Side taunt: He belly flops onto the ground stiffly, then rises back to his feet. Based on one of his victory animations that first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
- Down taunt: He looks downwards with his hands behind his back and kicks the floor. This is one of the few taunts that can deal damage; although its range and damage are very small, it can meteor smash opponents starting in Super Smash Bros. Melee. This is Luigi's only taunt prior to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Peach [edit ]
- Up taunt: She takes her parasol out and twirls it, saying "Sweet!"
- Side taunt: She sways from side to side while holding her dress, singing "La la la la la la!" as she does this. This taunt is faster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with the voice clip being sped up as well.
- Down taunt: She spins, then points to the camera while winking, exclaiming "Sweet!" Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the exclamation is changed to "Uh-huh!" In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the spin at the start is removed and a heart effect appears as she points. This is Peach's only taunt in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Bowser [edit ]
- Up taunt: He stomps one foot, then roars while throwing his head back as smoke comes out of his mouth. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the stomp at the start is removed. This is Bowser's only taunt in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
- Side taunt: He bites five times. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, this is reduced to three times.
- Down taunt: He balances on one foot.
Dr. Mario [edit ]
- Up taunt: He grinds his shoe on the ground.
- Side taunt: He tosses a Megavitamin of random colors, then grabs it in mid-air. This is Dr. Mario's only taunt in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
- Down taunt: He pats his shoulder with his fist.
Wario [edit ]
- Up taunt: He laughs, dropping his jaw, then snaps his mouth shut with his hands.
- Side taunt: He shakes his rear at the camera while making mocking sounds.
- Down taunt: He holds up three fingers with each hand individually, then with both hands at once, saying "Wah!" each time. This taunt is faster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Wario can also taunt while riding his bike, where he laughs while holding up three fingers on both hands, then puts one hand down to pick his nose.
Diddy Kong [edit ]
- Up taunt: He throws his cap in the air and it lands on his head.
- Side taunt: He holds his hands forward while chittering. This taunt is shorter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Down taunt: He claps his hands above his head four times, hopping from one leg to the other each time.
Rosalina & Luma [edit ]
- Up taunt: They lean forward and twirl as Luma makes a chirping sound.
- Side taunt: Rosalina waves her wand up and down, saying "Mmm hmm!", while Luma nods.
- Down taunt: Rosalina crouches, then waves around her wand while standing back up as Luma spins and twirls. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Luma makes a chirping sound during this taunt.
Bowser Jr. [edit ]
- Up taunt: He sits on the edge of the Junior Clown Car and breathes a fireball while laughing. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Junior Clown Car has a shocked expression during this taunt.
- Side taunt: He waves his hammer above his head. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Junior Clown Car closes its eyes during this taunt, and the Koopalings wave their respective Magic Wands instead of a hammer.
- Down taunt: The Junior Clown Car activates its wheels and spins with an angry expression. After it stops, Bowser Jr. continues to spin in place for a moment.
Daisy [edit ]
- Up taunt: She raises her fist while saying "Woohoo!" Resembles her official artwork for the game.
- Side taunt: She twirls around, then holds up two fingers while saying "Yeah!"
- Down taunt: She places her hands on her hips while uttering a grunt. Resembles her artwork from Itadaki Street DS and Mario Kart 7 .
King K. Rool [edit ]
- Up taunt: He bites four times while snarling.
- Side taunt: He slaps his belly. Like several of King K. Rool's moves, this taunt triggers his Belly Super Armor if he is attacked from the front during it.
- Down taunt: He puts his hands on his knees and stomps with one foot.
Piranha Plant [edit ]
- Up taunt: It extends out of its pot while biting, accompanied by the "Pipe Travel" sound effect. Based on its sprite animation from Super Mario Bros.
- Side taunt: It bites four times, grinning after the final one.
- Down taunt: It twirls, then poses.
Smash Taunts[edit ]

A Smash Taunt is a unique type of taunt available only to Snake, Pit, and the Star Fox characters and only usable on particular stages. It is performed by inputting a down taunt for exactly one frame and triggers a conversation featuring the character and/or their in-universe allies.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour[edit ]
Characters can taunt or cheer for the player in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour by using Control Stick or +Control Pad for taunting and C Stick for cheering; however, they must not be using the same controller. This does not directly affect gameplay, but the quotes on the screen and the voices can provide a distraction for the player.

Mario Golf: Advance Tour[edit ]
Just like its console counterpart, characters can taunt or cheer (called supports in this game) for players in Mario Golf: Advance Tour by using +Control Pad for taunting and A Button, B Button, L Button, and R Button for cheering. All characters except the main character will use their Birdie lines for their supports and use their bogey lines for their taunts. Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Bowser, Waluigi, Wario, Neil, and Ella reuse their cheer and taunt lines from Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour . In addition, players can customize the taunts for Neil or Ella by going to the Taunt and Support Editor in the Options mode.

In Mario Tennis Open and the tennis mode of Mario Sports Superstars , the player can taunt by tapping or pressing any shot button before an opponent's serve or before their return. A successfully completed taunt powers up the player's next shot. Most characters have their taunt animations reused from Mario Power Tennis, and characters who were previously playable in Mario Tennis Open are reused in Mario Sports Superstars.

Taunting returns in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash , Mario Tennis Aces with the same mechanics as in previous Mario Tennis games and the tennis mode of Mario Sports Superstars. Computer players additionally taunt when the player is serving.
