R.O.B. (short for Robotic Operating Buddy) is an accessory that was released alongside the Nintendo Entertainment System to help advertise the console as a toy, due to American consumers being uneasy about video games after the video game crash of 1983,[2] though it was compatible with only two games: Gyromite and Stack-Up . Its release and brief popularity in 1985 helped lead Super Mario Bros. , released around the same time, to quickly reach a wider audience than it otherwise would have.[citation needed] In Japan, R.O.B. has a red-and-white color scheme to match the Family Computer and is called Family Computer Robot (shortened to Famicom Robot or simply Robot).

R.O.B. is depicted as a character in some Nintendo games, such as in the Super Smash Bros. series, where he is a playable fighter. In the Super Mario franchise, he is a sentient robot who speaks in a stilted manner and makes computer-generated sound effects. He most notably appears as a playable character in Mario Kart DS and a minor character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie .

History[edit ]

Nintendo Entertainment System commercial[edit ]

In an Australian commercial for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the spokesman claims that Nintendo games cannot be beaten "even with your robot partner".[3] R.O.B. can be seen in B-roll during this scene, and a CGI version of Smick, an enemy from Gyromite, appears in the group alongside Bowser and Lakitu.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit ]

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars , R.O.B. appears in the toy chest at the top of Booster Tower. In both the original and the remake, R.O.B. uses his Famicom colors.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves[edit ]

R.O.B.'s most prominent WarioWare appearance is in WarioWare: Smooth Moves , as the boss of 9-Volt's boss microgame, Star Fox. Like many of his other appearances, R.O.B. model differs between Japanese and western versions. He bobs around, shooting either the Video Shooting Series light gun using both arms in the Japanese version or its western equivalent, the NES Zapper. To defeat him, the player has to shoot the flashing blocks set-up for as if he is being used to play Stack-Up.

WarioWare Gold[edit ]

In WarioWare Gold , R.O.B. is featured in the R.O.B. Block Set microgame.

Mario Kart series[edit ]

Mario Kart DS[edit ]

R.O.B. is an unlockable character in Mario Kart DS and the only playable character in the game who does not return for later Mario Kart games. He can be unlocked by winning gold trophies on either all Nitro or Retro Mirror cups. R.O.B.'s emblem is the purple D-pad of a Nintendo Entertainment System controller. R.O.B.'s two personal karts including the ROB-BLS, based on his stand from Stack-Up , and the ROB-LGS, which appear like legs for R.O.B. He does not use the steering wheel of karts, due to lacking hands. R.O.B. appears to drive by moving his arms instead. R.O.B. and Bowser are tied as the heaviest and fastest racers.

In Japanese releases, R.O.B. is named HVC-012, the model number for the Japanese version of R.O.B., and also colored after his Japanese model. His karts also have different colors in the Japanese version. Also, the staff ghost data for Desert Hills and Rainbow Road feature the Japanese R.O.B. and vehicles, regardless of the version of the game the player has.

A bike themed after R.O.B. appears in Mario Kart World , called the R.O.B. H.O.G. The bike itself is similar to a regular dirt bike, but with R.O.B. acting as the engine, his eyes as the headlights with handlebars on each side of his head, and his arms holding the front tire. The Mario Kart World Direct showed the bike in its Japanese Famicom colors, along with the "Family Computer Robot" label near the back tire, though the bike also changes to an NES-styled color scheme for different characters, instead of being restricted to a certain region. His middle section is depicted similarly to how it is in the Super Smash Bros. series, being segmented and bending itself forward.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit ]

SmashWiki article: R.O.B. (SSBB)

R.O.B. is added as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl . R.O.B.'s main costume is his Family Computer colors, with his Nintendo Entertainment System palette and even one based on the North American SNES being alternate costumes. There is structure resembling R.O.B. in the background of Port Town Aero Dive, in one of the stop spots in the background. He is unlocked by playing 160 Brawl matches, collecting 250 trophy, or by joining in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. R.O.B. has lower attack power than other heavyweights. R.O.B.'s standard special move is Robo Beam, in which he fires a beam between his eyes. R.O.B.'s side special move is Arm Rotor, in which he spins his arms around rapidly. R.O.B.'s down special move is Gyro, in which he charges and throws a gyro accessory. R.O.B.'s up special move is Robo Burner, which uses jets in R.O.B.'s base to fly into the air. His Final Smash is Diffusion Beam, which fires a short-range constant beam that inflicts repeated damage to opponents nearby.

The Subspace Emissary[edit ]

Before the events of the Subspace Emissary, R.O.B. was the leader of the R.O.B. race of robots, officially titled the Master Robot.[4] He and the other robots lived on the floating Isle of Ancients and watched over the World of Trophies. However, it was ultimately invaded by Tabuu, a humanoid entity from Subspace. He attacked the Isle of Ancients, deactivating many R.O.B.s and eventually taking the robots hostage. R.O.B. was forced to ally himself with Tabuu in order to prevent the deaths of more of his robot brethren, and began to hide under his ceremonial robes of mourning and assume the title of Ancient Minister — the titular Subspace Emissary. The Isle of Ancients itself was converted into The Subspace Bomb Factory, and the Ancient Minister became the commander of the Subspace Army. As the commander of the army, he lead the invasion of the World of Trophies on behalf of Tabuu, while a specially trained group of R.O.B.s served as the Ancient Minister's personal bodyguards, the R.O.B. Squad, made up of R.O.B. Sentries (which use Family Computer colors and attack with their arms), R.O.B. Launchers (which use military green colors and shoot missiles), and R.O.B. Blasters (which use NES colors and shoot lasers). R.O.B.s were also used to detonate Subspace Bombs, to the Minister's deepening regret.

As the Ancient Minister, he first appeared in the Subspace Emissary after Mario and Kirby's match at the Midair Stadium, where he detonated a Subspace Bomb, sending the stadium to Subspace. He escaped, only to be later chased by Mario and Pit in The Plains, who had little success catching him. He then detonated another Subspace Bomb at The Battlefield Fortress, attracting the attention of Marth, Meta Knight, and Ike. Regardless of the group's efforts, he manages to escape their grasp, however, he is soon discovered by Mario and Pit once again, along with Link and Yoshi. Again, the Ancient Minister escapes, but not before detonating yet another Subspace Bomb, sending King Dedede's Castle into Subspace.

The Ancient Minister is not seen again until Samus and Pikachu corner him at the Subspace Bomb Factory. Samus and Pikachu are ready to fight, but the Ancient Minister refuses, growing depressed at the number of R.O.B.s sacrificed to activate the Subspace Bombs, confusing them. Soon after, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Captain Falcon, and Captain Olimar arrive, also battle-ready, but the Ancient Minister still refuses. A holographic Ganondorf appears, quickly realizing that he has betrayed him. Using a remote-controlled button, he is able to control the R.O.B.s, ordering them to attack the Ancient Minister and activate every Subspace Bomb in the factory.

The Ancient Minister's true form: R.O.B.

However, when the R.O.B. Squad shoots the Ancient Minister, his robes burn off, revealing to everyone present that he was a R.O.B. himself all along. Unable to prevent the bombs from being detonated, he decides to remain with the other R.O.B.s until he ends up being carried away by Donkey Kong as the factory explodes. R.O.B. escapes with the others on the Falcon Flyer and later meets up with the rest of the characters on the ground. He and the rest of the cast go into Subspace to confront Tabuu, but are all turned into Trophies. Eventually, Kirby saves him and he joins the group who go on to defeat Tabuu and save the World of Trophies. With so many Subspace Bombs set off simultaneously on the Isle of Ancients, only a shining, X-shaped scar appears where the Isle once was when the rest of the world is restored with the destruction of Tabuu and the Great Maze.[4]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit ]

SmashWiki article: R.O.B. (SSB4)

R.O.B. retains his role of being an unlockable fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U . A difference from before is that R.O.B.'s default palette in Western releases is based on his NES colors, not his Famicom colors like in unlocalized releases. R.O.B.'s Final Smash was changed to Super Diffusion Beam, changing him to a cannon that fires a single beam that inflicts repeated damage until the end of the attack. R.O.B. uses the Zapper equipment for attack, the Block equipment for defense, and the Booster equipment for speed.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit ]

SmashWiki article: R.O.B. (SSBU)

R.O.B. is an unlockable fighter once more in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate . His Final Smash has been changed again, this time to Guided Robo Beam. The default and secondary palettes are once again region-specific, though certain spirit battles feature the NES-palette R.O.B. in unlocalized releases and the Famicom palette equivalent in Western versions. A light gauge on R.O.B. can determine how much fuel is left while he uses his Robo Burner, emitting blue while full, yellow at two-thirds, red at one-third, and flashing red if no fuel remains. R.O.B.'s pummel now involves headbutting the opponent and his forward throw to rear back before punching the target. R.O.B. travels higher during his up throw. His down throw can bury opponents and inflicts less damage to compensate. In the Korean version, the announcer calls him "Robot", as in the Japanese and Chinese versions, even though R.O.B. uses his English name.

R.O.B. is not in the opening cutscene of Adventure Mode: World of Light, although he and every other fighter except Kirby are converted into puppet fighters from Galeem's beams of light. However, R.O.B. serves Dharkon, as he is fought in The Dark Realm, and upon being defeated, R.O.B. joins the others on their journey.

R.O.B.'s Classic Mode route is titled "Unreadable Expressions." He engages in the following battles in the following order:

  1. Meta Knight on Halberd
  2. Dark Samus on Frigate Orpheon
  3. Five Mr. Game & Watches on Flat Zone X
  4. Little Mac (wire-frame costume) on Boxing Ring
  5. Wii Fit Trainer (x2, male and female) on Wii Fit Studio
  6. Horde Battle against six R.O.B.s on Mario Bros.
  7. Final boss fight against Galleom

Super Mario Maker[edit ]

R.O.B. is amongst the Mystery Mushroom costumes in Super Mario Maker . R.O.B.'s design is region-specific, sporting his Famicom colors in unlocalized releases and NES colors in other releases. When the player character becomes R.O.B., the "level start" tune from Gyromite plays, and R.O.B.'s taunt from pressing +Control Pad up is emitting beams of light from his eyes.

Illumination film series[edit ]

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit ]

While R.O.B. himself does not physically appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie , at the end of the Super Mario Bros. Plumbing commercial where Mario and Luigi are standing behind the plumbing van, a market named Gyro Market is seen in Brooklyn. Its sign has R.O.B.'s head at the center of it.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[edit ]

“You are now arriving at the Gateway Galaxy... your gateway to the galaxies. Use authorized Warp Pipes only. Sudden changes in velocity are normal. To begin travel, visit the flight deck. Departure timing may vary. There are many destinations to explore, each with its own inhabitants. If you require assistance, you can find me at the information desk. I am R.O.B.”
R.O.B., The Super Mario Galaxy Movie [5]

R.O.B. appears in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie working at the information desk of the Gateway Galaxy, voiced by Ed Skudder, who also served as the head of story.[1] He is modeled after his Japanese design with the white body and red arms, and has green, expressive LED eyes in his lenses and an auto-tuned voice.[6] In the film, he directs Peach and Toad, and later Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, to the flight deck, frustrating them when he takes a long time to turn and point to its location; his slow turning speed in these scenes is a reference to the original peripheral. As part of the promotion for the film, users who previously signed up for text alerts for The Super Mario Bros. Movie were sent a message in March 2026 informing them to save a new contact named "Gateway Galaxy", which uses a profile picture depicting R.O.B.[7]

Before R.O.B. appeared physically, the same Gyro Market from the previous movie appears in Brooklyn, when Yoshi uses a ladder to climb out of the sewers.

Trophies[edit ]
Trophy
R.O.B.
Appears in:
NES Nintendo Entertainment System Robotic Operating Buddy
R.O.B. sporting his Famicom colors. R.O.B. debuted in Japan as Robot in 1985 as an add-on for the Famicom. He could be combined with a "gyro set," etc. for two types of play. The player controlled Professor Hector, the TV emitted light, and R.O.B. responded to the light by moving. At the time, it was epoch- making game play. Recently, R.O.B. appeared in Mario Kart DS.
Trophy
Diffusion Beam
Appears in:
Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl
R.O.B.'s Final Smash. He emits a beam from his eyes that spreads across the spectrum and undulates in great variety as it travels. What makes this technique different is R.O.B.'s ability to move while using it. This allows him to use it in combination with his other moves to increase his Final Smash's effectiveness.
Trophy
R.O.B. Sentry
Appears in:
Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl
A robot with a two-armed shot. This R.O.B. uses the booster on its base to propel its jumps. Often used in the Subspace Army bomb factory in defense or labor roles, the R.O.B. Sentry also works as a detonator. Its emotional capacity is unknown, but it has utter trust in the Ancient Minister and obeys him unwaveringly. This production model has been made in great numbers.
Trophy
R.O.B. Launcher
Appears in:
Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl
An upgraded R.O.B. model with a missile-launcher head that bolsters firepower. The standard coloring has also been refinished with a green and brown military motif, stylishly accented with a blue cord connecting the arm sections and base. This R.O.B. does not use its arms--attacks are limited to the missiles fired from its head.
Trophy
R.O.B. Blaster
Appears in:
Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl
A R.O.B. model boasting robo-beam-blasting eye lenses suited for long-range combat. There are two types--one acts like a stationary gun, sitting in place and lining up targets, and the other is mobile. Actually, the R.O.B. Sentry also features beam-firing capabilities, but because the roles of the R.O.B. Squad are so well defined, there's no conflict between the ranks.
Trophy
Ancient Minister
Appears in:
Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The commander of the Subspace Army who uses Subspace Bombs to tear up this world. He was once the lord of this world, living on the floating Island of the Ancients with many robots--but the robots were taken hostage on Tabuu's orders. Now that their home's a bomb factory, the robots carry out their functions while enduring deep sadness caused by the loss of their colleagues.

  • Pit: How about Robobuddy, Third Edition?
  • Palutena: And what happened to the first two editions?
  • Pit: Oh, good point. How about Zzzrt...Blaaat...Tron?
  • Palutena: Let's just keep things simple by calling him R.O.B.
  • Viridi: The light on its head shows you the strength of the laser it's about to fire. The moment you forget about it, it'll unleash its laser at maximum power, so watch out!
