Toad Town is the capital city of the Mushroom Kingdom. Located at the doorstep of Peach's Castle, the town first appeared as Mushroom Kingdom in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars . Since then, Toad Town has become a recurrent location in the Super Mario franchise, especially the RPG games. However, much like Peach's Castle, the appearance, design, and layout of the town has varied greatly each time it has reappeared, though it has almost always been depicted as a flourishing and cheery place.

History[edit ]

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit ]

The Mushroom Kingdom, as it is called, is one of the locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake. It is taken over by Shymores at one point until Claymorton is defeated.

Paper Mario series[edit ]

Paper Mario[edit ]

Toad Town returns in Paper Mario with a larger role, as it is now the hub location. It is also the setting for the start and end cutscenes.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit ]

Toad Town is mentioned in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door by Zip Toad, stating that he was going to be in a film and that he was heading to Toad Town. After Mario rescues Pine T. Sr from the Pit of 100 Trials, Pine T. Jr. emails Mario and mentions that his father went to Toad Town to take care of Li'l Oinks. It is also mentioned by Lumpy if Mario reads his Journal.

Toad Town is mentioned two additional times in the game, but mistakenly goes under different names in the English localization. It is a possible answer in the 65th Trivia Quiz-Off (where it is known as Mushville), and is mentioned by a crow NPC in Twilight Town (where it is known as Mushroom Town). In the Nintendo Switch remake, both instances refer to Toad Town by its proper name.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit ]

Toad Town returns as the main hub of Paper Mario: The Origami King. It connects to Peach's Castle, like in Paper Mario.

Mario & Luigi series[edit ]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit ]

Toadtown Square, as it is primarily called in the original game, is visited by Mario only at the start of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake to learn basic moves and board the Koopa Cruiser.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit ]

The Mario Bros. time-travel to a past iteration of Toad Town in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time , after they exit the Shroob Mother Ship, and find that Shroobs are attacking the location.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit ]

Toad Town is where the Toads live in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake. It is accessible to Mario and Luigi during certain parts of their journey.

Illumination film series[edit ]

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit ]

Toad Town[1] appears in The Super Mario Bros. Movie . Peach's Castle is located on a hill on the far side of the city. Mario and Toad pass through Toad Town to reach Peach's Castle. Many Toads can be seen doing various activities such as collecting coins from a Coin Block. Different shops and buildings can be found throughout the town such as an antiques shop. Toad Town's layout takes advantage of many different kinds of objects, including floating blocks and lifts. Additionally, there is a system of Warp Pipes and Clear Pipes. Toad understands how this all works and moves through smoothly, while Mario does not. He often trails behind Toad and he struggles to correctly use the pipes. A green Warp Pipe links Toad Town to the open space in front of Peach's Castle.

Later in the film, as Bowser and his castle are about to arrive at the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach and Toad get there first with Peach's Mach Bike. Peach warns her citizens of the impending attack and tells them to flee into the surrounding forest, while driving all the way up to Peach's Castle. The Toads panic, but the advice is followed. After Bowser arrives at Peach's Castle, his minions take over the streets and begin collecting the Question Blocks around the town. Mario and Donkey Kong reach the Mushroom Kingdom by Rocket Barrel to stop Bowser and rescue everyone he captured, but a Bullet Bill from Bowser's Castle knocks them off so that they land in Toad Town. Mario and Donkey Kong proceed to fight their way across Toad Town on foot, starting by throwing the Rocket Barrel into a pyramid of collected Question Blocks to blow it apart and scatter many of the minions. Mario gets a Super Mushroom from one of the blocks, and Donkey Kong gets a Fire Flower from another. They lose these power-ups later on due to a kicked Koopa Shell ricocheting back into them, but Mario collects a Super Leaf from one of the Question Blocks that was not gathered up to continue while Donkey Kong relies on his innate strength.

The film's ending has Town Town restored to normal, with Toads again inhabiting the city instead of Bowser's forces. Mario and Luigi live in a Toad House within the town and head out on a plumbing job, deftly jumping across a series of floating blocks and lifts before going down a Warp Pipe.

Peach and the Toad General refer to Toad Town as a city.[2] [3]

Ambiguous appearances[edit ]

There are other occurrences of urbanized areas surrounding Peach's Castle, but it is not made clear whether or not these are true appearances of Toad Town.

A decade prior to Toad Town's first in-game appearance in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a mushroom-based town appears in a flashback of Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen! being attacked by Bowser's army.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 , Princess Toadstool's castle is surrounded by a town full of Toad Houses. Beside Toad's house, where Mario and Luigi seem to also reside, there is a bank, an orphanage, the local library, and the treasury.

Super Mario (Kodansha manga)[edit ]

Prior to Toad Town's debut, in the Super Mario Kodansha manga a castle village appears in some chapters. It is inhabited by both Toads and friendly Goombas.

During the second part of the Super Mario Land 2 manga, the town is attacked by King Tetris. The town has both rural houses and towers as well as modern skyscrapers.

In the fourth chapter of Super Mario Land 3 , the local school is seen, being run by Peach and her father. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Jackie, and the Toads are part of the student body. In the third chapter is it revealed that the Mario Bros. live in a house just outside the town.

In Super Mario Land 4 , the local airport is seen in the background, at the beginning of the first chapter.

In Dr. Mario , part of the town is seen in a double panel when the Dokudoku Pakkun Flower infect the citizens, looking like a normal Japanese neighborhood. Later, the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital is shown.

In Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World 6 , a full view of the town shows a restaurant district, an abandoned toy factory, and a police station next to the castle grounds and the main district. Other areas visited during the volume are an old film studio and a Toad House-skyscraper.

In Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World 7 , the town is threatened by KK Robo's fiery stomps, but the fire is put out by a small tsunami created by Mega Wiggler, who manages to put out the flames without creating too much damage to the town.

In Super Mario Kart 2 , Peach creates a scavenger hunt during a Balloon Battle, with the participants needing to visit some spots to retrieve items to use against the rivals. The places visited are Yoshi's Cookie bakery, Lady's car repair shop, and the BomBom kindergarten.

Yukio Sawada manga[edit ]

Prior to Toad Town's introduction in the games, the Mushroom Kingdom castle town appears in various manga written by Yukio Sawada, often at the beginning or ending of his works, including Super Mario Bros. 2 , Famicom Meiro: Super Mario/Makaimura , and Super Mario Bros. 3 , where it consists solely of Toad Houses.

In the 13th volume of Super Mario-kun , the castle town appears at the beginning of chapter 9.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

In Super Mario Galaxy , the Castle Gardens feature a small stone-built village across the lake from Peach's Castle, which appears during the prologue.
