Turnips in the Super Mario franchise are vegetables that are usually used for defense. They first appear in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and its Western counterpart, Super Mario Bros. 2 .

History[edit ]

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario Advance[edit ]

Turnips in Super Mario Bros. 2 and its remake are objects planted in the ground everywhere in Subcon, especially grassy regions, and can be picked up and thrown at enemies to defeat them. The Dream Machine can also produce turnips which can be used as weapons for the player to damage Wart.

In Super Mario Advance, giant turnips called Giant Vegetables can hit more enemies due to their bigger size, but take longer to pull out.

BS Super Mario USA[edit ]

Mario and Toad throwing Turnips at Wart, Birdo and the 8 bits in BS Super Mario USA

Turnips in BS Super Mario USA are functionally identical to their appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2. Giant turnips are thrown by Princess Peach from off-screen during certain intervals of the voice drama. It can take out any enemy except for the end bosses of each world and Wart but can also do damage to the player. Giant black turnips with angry faces are also thrown from off-screen but by the bad guys.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit ]

Ripe and unripe turnips in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 can appear when using the Blue Green Switch, whose e-Reader card simply refers to them as "vegetables." Turnips in World-e appear in several levels, namely Vegetable Volley, The ol' Switcheroo, A Sky-High Adventure, Ice Cubed, Ground Work and Treacherous Halls. Giant turnips also return from Super Mario Advance. Turnips cannot be picked up by Frog Mario.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit ]

Screenshot of Super Mario Odyssey.
Mario carrying a turnip in Super Mario Odyssey

Turnips appear in Super Mario Odyssey , in the Luncheon Kingdom. They universally do not have faces in this game, and the leaves are taller than in other games. Only Mario's companion Cappy can pull a Turnip from the ground, traditionally by using the Cap Throw on one. Mario can pick up and hold it above his head, then throw it. While similar to prior games, turnips follow Super Mario Odyssey's rules on throwable objects: they are thrown in an arc and land on the ground without breaking or falling through. Mario can also bounce off a turnip on the ground. Turnips can be thrown into large pots of Stupendous Stew, usually seen in Peronza Plaza, which grants Mario coins. A Volbonan near one such pot requests that Mario do this.

There are also three golden turnips. When these turnips are thrown into the stew, Mario receives a Power Moon. The Power Moons tied to this are called Golden Turnip Recipe 1, Golden Turnip Recipe 2, and Golden Turnip Recipe 3. This means unlike the mechanically similar seeds, learning the name of the Power Moon from Talkatoo does not hint at where Mario must go to find the turnips.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]

Main article: Vegetable (move)

Turnips (referred to as simply "vegetables" in Super Smash Bros. Melee 's trophy description) in the Super Smash Bros. series are part of Peach's down special move, originating from Super Smash Bros. Melee, where she picks up turnips and using them as projectiles. The facial expression of the turnip determines the damage and knockback it causes, such as how winking turnips deal more damage and knockback than their smiling counterparts. The strongest variety of turnip, the sick turnip, is rare, but extremely powerful. Her returning appearances in Super Smash Bros. Brawl , Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate all feature the same move. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate introduces Daisy as a playable character, with an identical moveset to Peach, including Vegetable.

Mario & Luigi series[edit ]

Ripe and unripe turnips in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake are two of the three possible objects that Wiggler can pull out during his boss fight, after watering the garden. In the original game, they resemble the original turnips seen in Super Mario Bros. 2; in the remake, they use their design from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Turnips in both the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser side-game of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions and the Bowser Jr.'s Journey side-game of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey are thrown by Shy Guys to attack their targets; furthermore, a larger turnip is thrown by Shy Guys during their Special Skill, Throw the Fight.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase[edit ]

A turnip in WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase is the object used by Mario in the microgame Mario Adv. to defeat an enemy.

Mario Kart series[edit ]

Planted turnips in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart Tour appear in the Shy Guy Bazaar course. A Turnip in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass is the emblem representing the Turnip Cup.

In Mario Kart World , patches of Turnips also appear in the region around Moo Moo Meadows. These Turnips can be uprooted when driven into, sometimes dropping a Dash Mushroom.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit ]

Captain Toad throws a Turnip in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Turnips in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its ports are objects that can be plucked from Pluck Patches by Captain Toad or Toadette and then thrown to attack enemies. They award one coin when they hit a surface or an enemy. Turnips can also be used to unlock or discover new pathways by throwing them at obstacles such as POW blocks. In the minecart levels of the game, Captain Toad rides a minecart full of turnips that can be thrown in many angles at his surrounding environment. Some levels also contain turnip-shooting cannons, starting with Turnip Cannon Jungle. Additionally, Captain Toad can throw turnips at Super Gems to obtain them without having to grab them himself.

Giant turnips also return from Super Mario Advance during the boss battle against Wingo. At the end of the battle, the final giant turnip thrown at Wingo by Captain Toad causes the bird boss to accidentally swallow the massive vegetable and become too bloated to fly, resulting in Captain Toad's victory.

Minecraft[edit ]

Turnips in the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack of Minecraft replace potatoes.

Paper Mario series[edit ]

Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit ]

Sacred Forest
Mario and the yellow Rescue Squad pulling the turnip out in Paper Mario: Color Splash
Main article: Turnip (Thing)

A turnip in Paper Mario: Color Splash is a Thing that appears in the entrance of the Sacred Forest, blocking the Warp Pipe to the rest of the course. All eleven members of the yellow Rescue Squad must be found in order to pull it free. When it is used in battle, it will become sliced and the slices will shred the enemies (and the screen), like the Scissors Thing in Paper Mario: Sticker Star .

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit ]

Turnips in Paper Mario: The Origami King are mentioned in Musée Champignon's description for the Black Shy Guy, which states that it likes to throw turnip-like objects.

Yoshi's Crafted World[edit ]

A large turnip in Yoshi's Crafted World is a craft in Monty-Mole-B-Gone and one of the six souvenir hunt requests from the Origami Gardens Blockafeller.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit ]

Turnips in Mario Golf: Super Rush are thrown by Toadette during her special dash, Turnip-Toss Dash.

Illumination film series[edit ]

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit ]

In a promotional clip for The Super Mario Bros. Movie , Toad is shown fighting off a Goomba by throwing random items out of his backpack at it, one of which is a turnip.[1] Turnips do not appear in the actual film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[edit ]

Boxes of Turnips can be seen displayed on stalls in Toad Town as an unchained Chomp broke loose.

Turnips can be seen next to Wart in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie .[2] Princess Peach later uses her parasol to knock one into Wart's mouth, knocking him back and defeating him.

Donkey Kong Bananza[edit ]

In Donkey Kong Bananza , Donkey Kong is able to pull turnips out of the ground to find items such as Banandium Chips, gold, or certain types of chunks.

These vegetables, which first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, can be plucked from the ground and hurled at enemies. Unlike regular veggies, they often sport eyes or even faces; in fact, when Princess Peach plucks them from the ground to use as projectiles, the expressions on their faces dictate how much damage they'll do.
