Appears in Donkey Kong Bananza (2025)

Fossils appear as a type of collectible in Donkey Kong Bananza . They can be found throughout most layers of the Underground World and can be exchanged for fashion items at Style Shops. Each of these layers contains its own unique fossils, many of which are based on enemies or characters from the Donkey Kong Country games.

Fossils are split into three categories: common, which glow blue; rare, which glow red; and extra-rare, which is much larger than the others and must be obtained by breaking the terrain it is held in. Larger layers have 72 fossils split into 61 common fossils, 10 rare fossils, and one extra-rare fossil (the Planet Core is the sole exception, which has only 31 common fossils and thus 42 total fossils), while smaller layers have only 30 common fossils, which are blue recolors of common fossils from other layers. Ingot Isle Cave-In, The Divide, The Junction, and the Racing Layer, as well as the DLC layer DK Island, all lack fossils. However, fossils are present on DK Island during an Emerald Rush.

During Emerald Rushes, all fossils on a layer are temporarly restored and turn green, matching the aesthetic that other collectibles take on during an Emerald Rush. Collecting these green fossils grants Donkey Kong an Emerald Perk. Rarer fossils grant rarer Perks. Furthermore, the Fossil Radar Emerald Perk displays all fossil locations on the Map.

Treasure chests buried underground can contain Fossil Maps, which show the locations of fossils in a specific layer. Fossil Maps can also be purchased at Stuff Shops.

Once a fossil is spent at the Style Shop for the first time, it is put on display at the Fossil Museum in the Groove Layer.

List of fossils[edit ]

Layer Common fossil Rare fossil Extra-rare fossil
Lagoon Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Ammonite

Anomalocaris

Whale
This ancient sea organism was related to squids and octopuses...though it took after the squid side of the family more. It looks large, but nothing whose name means "odd shrimp" could have been that big of a deal. It had humanlike intelligence and could even feel anxious...but what did this 200-ton creature have to worry about?
Hilltop Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Ammonite (alt color)
N/A
Through cycles of evolution and extinction, it gave rise to over 10,000 species. So what did you do today?
Canyon Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Leaf

Trilobite
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Triceratops
A planty appendage that dates back to the dawn of life. Not bad for a simple leaf, eh? So named because of the three distinct lobes of its exoskeleton. At least it sounds cool... Its name means "face with three horns," which seems rudely dismissive of this dino diva's fashionable frill.
Freezer Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Sea Lily
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Preserved Bug
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
T. Rex
A relative of the starfish that captured prey in its petallike arms. Natural resin that solidified into a jewel after trapping an insect. Having a few of these puts some zing into a collection. This famous dino had an impressive physique, especially for a distant relative of chickens.
Forest Layer A Gnawty fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Beaver
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza. It is invocative of Professor Chops.
Pig

Spider
This gnawty, buck-toothed critter lived in all sorts of places, from jungles to ancient ruins. It's unclear why this polite porker lived in the jungle, but he always had the chops to help a Kong in need. The webs this squittish spider were sturdy enough to stand on... for a while.
Resort Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Leaf (alt color)
N/A
A single leaf can tell us a lot about its environment long ago. However, they often decayed too quickly to become fossils.
Tempest Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Frog
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Anglerfish
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Swordfish
Identifiable by its red-on-green mottled skin. It could leap startling distances in the wink of an eye, even with a passenger. It glimmered and illuminated dark waters with its bright lantern. It's said to have lived mostly within sunken ships. In water, one had to stay on their guard around this fish's notably sharp nose. On land, it would struggle and flop around.
Landfill Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Sea Lily (alt color)
N/A
It drifted through the ocean in search of its next home. There are many colors of sea lily in the world, all of them elegant.
Radiance Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Banana Bird

Armadillo
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Sea Urchin
Small birds that had the coloration (and possibly texture) of a banana. They were trapped in crystals long ago. These critters rolled into balls to defend their turf. Some of them with military training simply carried cannons instead. Covered with spikes on the outside yet tasty on the inside, it often fell prey to swordfish while lurching and vulnerable.
Groove Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Beaver (alt color)
N/A
There used to be red, gold, and enormous variations. If angered while tottering, it was capable of making huge leaps.

Cathode-Ray Tube

Robot
You could roll these rubber rings around and jump off them to reach high spots... or just bounce on them for fun. An old-style television that was sure to catch the eye. If it didn't turn on at first, the best way to repair it was a good slap. A chaotic robot that spoke and acted independently. Created by a maverick scientist...using his wife's pots and pans.
Forbidden Layer A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
Frog (alt color)
N/A
Unlike most frogs, this one abandoned the comfort of its native ponds for the dank dangers of a life in the mines.
Planet Core A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza

8-Bit Items
A fossil in Donkey Kong Bananza
8-Bit DK
A constant in the life of Kongs. Every new generation learns how to roll, throw, and blast themselves out of these. A fancy hat, purse, and parasol from days gone by. They may have been left behind by an elegant lady. A certain Kong in the prime of his youth. His amazing skill at handling barrels has been passed down to his descendants.
