Falling Platforms,[1] also referred to as crumbling platforms[2] or crumbling walkways,[3] are platforms in Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Odyssey . When stood on, they visibly fracture and slowly descend before abruptly disappearing. They rematerialize in their original positions after a few seconds. Though similar to Donut Blocks, Falling Platforms begin to fall as soon as the player character steps on them without means of stopping it. Regardless of game, Falling Platforms seem to be made out of unstable material, be it cracked rocks or rusted metal.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit ]
Crumbling platforms debut in Super Mario 3D Land, in which they are all made of craggy stone. Most are rectangular prisms and the same size as the Donut Blocks in the game. They first appear in the desert-themed World 5-2, where Mario (or Luigi) must walk along them to reach the top of the Goal Pole. They also appear in World 8-5 between stretches of Red-Blue Panels suspended in a cavern, rendering stable footing rare. Large cube-shaped ones appear in the final battle with Bowser in World 8- Bowser's Castle: Part 2, where they alternate with stable ground up an incline. Crumbling platforms are more recurring in the special worlds, where they appear in large numbers in Special 1-2, Special 4-5, and Special 8-1. In Special 4-5, crumbling platforms are the only platforms available for much of the level.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit ]
In Super Mario Odyssey, Falling Platforms, also referred to as crumbling metal panels,[4] collapsing platforms,[5] and fragile platforms,[5] are made of metal. In the Wooded Kingdom, cautionary yellow stripes are painted along their tops. Falling Platforms are needed to climb the Crumbling Tower to obtain two Power Moons, one of which requires Mario to bring an Uproot on this tower through these platforms. Falling Platforms in this kingdom slowly sink down upon contact before breaking in the air. Falling Platforms later reappear in the Metro Kingdom, where they appear inside New Donk City Hall. Here, they are of a broader shape and uniform orange color. They also break faster. These objects also appear in the Vanishing Road sub-areas of the aforementioned kingdom and the Dark Side.
Vibrant vanishing platforms similar to Falling Platforms appear during a Timer Challenge in the Luncheon Kingdom, and giant ones made of moon rocks appear in the Underground Moon Caverns.
