RoboBrood is a giant robot piloted by the four Broodals. It is a mobile fireworks launcher created for Bowser's wedding to Princess Peach.[1] It appears in Super Mario Odyssey , as the boss of Showdown at Bowser's Castle in Bowser's Kingdom and Arrival at Rabbit Ridge! in the Dark Side. RoboBrood's main body is a large cube that appears to be made of wood. On the front is a large cannon resembling Madame Broode's face, and on the other sides are domes where the Broodals ride. Spewart rides in the right-hand dome, Rango in the left, Hariet on the top, and Topper in the back. RoboBrood has two large legs that are usually covered in metal armor. It also appears to have paper lanterns hanging from it, fitting the Japanese-style kingdom it is first fought in.

Both fights with Robobrood are meant to be the Broodals' last stand in the story. The Bowser's Kingdom battle follows an earlier objective where two Broodals are battled, and is the final battle against the Broodals in the main story. The Dark Side fight is the conclusion to a series of fights against all four of the Broodals, where they all have one last verbal exchange with Mario.

Battle[edit ]

For Robobrood's appearance in Bowser's Kingdom, it is battled in the Showdown Arena. RoboBrood attacks by stomping around and shooting firework bombs from its cannon. Along with the firework bombs, it will fire a Pokio, which Mario must capture. Mario can then destroy the armor on RoboBrood's legs by knocking firework bombs back at it with his poking attack. Once the armor on one leg is destroyed, the robot will fall onto its left side, allowing Mario to climb up and attack Spewart's dome to knock him out. This can be done either with the Pokio or by using a Ground Pound. RoboBrood will then get back up and restore its armor, which must be broken again to knock it onto the right so Rango can be defeated. After this, RoboBrood will use two new attacks, it will charge at Mario while its legs sparkle, making them invulnerable to attacks, and shooting pinwheels that spin around the arena. Once again, a leg must be disabled to cause RoboBrood to kneel down in order for Mario to attack and defeat Hariet. Once the leg is disabled a final time, RoboBrood falls on its "face", allowing Mario to defeat Topper. Once all of the Broodals are knocked out, RoboBrood falls apart in a series of explosions before launching into the sky and exploding in fireworks shaped like the Broodals' faces. A Multi Moon is dropped for the machine for Mario to collect.

Another way to defeat RoboBrood is by scaling the vents on either side of its legs. These vents are protected by its armor but will periodically reveal themselves. This will allow Mario to use the pecking ability of the Pokio to latch onto the vents and fling himself upward to reach the Broodals' domes.

On the Dark Side, Robobrood is battled on the roof of Rabbit Ridge Tower, the Moon's weak gravity remains in effect. This time, Robobrood no longer releases Pokios. There are four helmet-less Hammer Bros that continuously spawn during the fight. Each time a cockpit is destroyed, all uncaptured Hammer Bros are defeated on the spot. Mario must instead capture one of the Hammer Bros, using its hammers to break the armor of the machine and its high jumps to access the cockpits. Hammers can also damage the cockpits and destroy the pinwheels but are unable to deflect the Robobrood's projectiles like a Pokio can. Robobrood's attacks are the same aside from the lack of Pokios. Another difference is that when Mario disables the leg the third time to defeat Hariet, RoboBrood instead crouches down in a sumo wrestler-like stance instead of kneeling like before. Once defeated, the machine drops a Multi Moon back to the ground again. Unlike most bosses in Super Mario Odyssey, Robobrood remains at Rabbit Ridge Tower and can be battled as many times as the player chooses to. A state change following the completion of Arrival at Rabbit Ridge allows the player to skip to the roof of Rabbit Ridge Tower, meaning they can battle Robobrood without having to first defeat all the Broodals.

In both fights, it is possible to defeat RoboBrood without capturing the Pokios or Hammer Bros.[2] [3]

Battle theme[edit ]

The theme for the fight with RoboBrood's changes depending on whether or not RoboBrood is standing. This theme is one of two boss themes in the game composed by Koji Kondo, the other being "Torkdrift Battle".

Notes[edit ]

  • The Broodals can actually be defeated in any order, provided the player has the proper method of defeating them (for example, by climbing on the wood panels placed on the robot's legs with a Pokio).
  • Mechawiggler, Topper and RoboBrood are the only bosses not to have three phases each time they are fought. RoboBrood has four, whereas Mechawiggler and Topper's first battle have only two.
  • The fireworks that go off when the robot is destroyed in the images of the Broodals are a reference to Super Mario 3D World , in which a similar event occurs when Meowser is defeated and flies off into the sky, leaving a firework explosion shaped like his head.
