The floating platform[1] is a platform in World 7-2 of New Super Mario Bros. The platform will begin rising when Mario or Luigi steps on it. The floating platform will move upwards at all times, even through solid objects but will move to the left or right when the player stands on the corresponding edges marked by the arrows, and can be ridden without horizontal movement by standing on the up arrow in the middle. The platform's movement is denoted by the corresponding arrow changing from white to red while the player is standing on top of it.
While it is necessary to use the floating platform to scale the vertical level, it also presents a danger to Mario and Luigi by being able to crush them against other solid surfaces unless they move it out of the way. Another hazard comes from Koopa Troopas which are on bridges and will be picked up by the floating platform. Just like other objects in the level, the floating platform can wrap around the left and right edges of the screen without disappearing. While there is only one floating platform in the level at any given time, it ordinarily spawning at the beginning of the level, the floating platform will spawn in the middle of the level if the player dies after collecting the Checkpoint Flag.
