Splunkins[1] are jack-o'-lantern enemies in New Super Mario Bros. Splunkins are encountered in World 3- Ghost House, World 5- Ghost House, World 7- Ghost House, and World 8-1. They walk along the ground like Goombas. When Splunkins are stomped, the cracks on their bodies deepen and they walk faster. Stomping one a second time defeats the Splunkin. Ground-pounding Splunkins, striking them with fireballs, and sliding into them defeats them in one hit.

Naming[edit ]
"Splunkin" is a portmanteau of "spelunking" (meaning exploring a cave) and "punkin" (a regional slurring of the word "pumpkin").
