Baby Fat, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Baby Fat[1] is a character in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake. He is a pudgy Baby Yoshi who appears as an inhabitant of Yo'ster Isle. Since Baby Fat is a baby, his voice is higher than the older Yoshis'. His appearance may be a reference to the Fat Chocobo from Square's own Final Fantasy franchise.

Baby Fat first appears as a Yoshi Egg in a nest in between two Yoshi's Houses. After Mario defeats the cake in Marrymore, Baby Fat hatches as a small baby. If the player interacts with Baby Fat, Yoshi will ask Mario if the latter wants to give some Yoshi Cookies to Baby Fat. If the player chooses "Yes," Mario will be asked how many Cookies he wishes to give him. A Yoshi on the island hints that if Mario feeds Baby Fat enough Cookies, Baby Fat will become too fat and have to leave the nest. This happens after Mario has given him 21 Cookies. Baby Fat's voice becomes deeper but not as deep as Boshi's voice.

After Baby Fat leaves the nest, Mario can continue to feed him Cookies for a chance at an item. If fed an insufficient number of Cookies, Baby Fat will complain that Mario has not fed him very many. If fed 10–19 or 21–49 Cookies, Baby Fat will lay an egg containing a random item inside. The items that can hatch randomly from the eggs laid by Baby Fat are Bracers, Energizers, Yoshi-Ades, Yoshi Candies, Frog Coins, and Red Essences. If he is fed exactly 20 Cookies, Baby Fat will reward Mario with a guaranteed drop of a Red Essence. Baby Fat will also give out Frog Coins as a reward the first time Mario feeds him a total of 30 Cookies. After that, he will reward Mario with Frog Coins anytime the number of Cookies that Mario has fed him reaches a multiple of 50. Any number of Cookies fed to Baby Fat above 20 will not give a better chance at an item or guarantee drops of items other than those listed previously except if Mario feeds Baby Fat 50 Cookies at once, in which case Baby Fat will lay an egg that will hatch as a Frog Coin.

In the original Japanese release, Baby Fat, like a baby, has more simplified speech. He also more clearly announces when he is about to lay an item-bearing egg. In the English release, these characteristics are not present, and he instead speaks like any other adult Yoshi. The remake's Eastern-language translations (Chinese and Korean) are based on the Japanese version, whereas the Western-language translations (Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Dutch) are based on the English version.

English
  • "(I'm dying for some Cookies.)"
  • "(Phew! Now that's what I call generous!)"
  • "(OH! I AM STUFFED! I won't need to eat for weeks!)"
Japanese
  • (クッキー たべたい〜。) (I wanna eat Cookies!)
  • (あ〜 くった〜。) (Ahh, I ate all!)
  • (あ〜 くった〜。 ....オ? う ま れ る....) (Ahh, I ate all! ...Oh? B E A R I N G...)

Naming[edit ]

"Baby Fat" originated as a section header in the Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Player's Guide, in a section referring to the Yoshi;[2] here, it is most likely intended as a pun on the phrase "baby fat" rather than intended to be treated as a name, as most of the other section headers are not their subjects' names. The Baby Yoshi himself is not directly named in the guide. The Yoshi would go on to be directly and unambiguously named "Baby Fat" in Nintendo Magazine UK's 47th issue, which covered Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.[1]
