- “Any dissent against Smithy will be dealt with by immediate melt down.”
- —Director, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
The Director is a high-ranking member of the Smithy Gang and the second-strongest supervisor of the assembly lines of Smithy's Factory in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Nintendo Switch remake. He is the middle-ranking official on the management staff: above the Clerk and the Manager, but below the Factory Chief and Smithy himself. As with the Clerk and Manager, the Director resembles a knight, wearing red armor and horns on his helmet and black gloves. Mario and company encounter him a little over halfway through the factory, where Princess Peach demands him to stop immediately, only for the Director to threaten that she be melted down. During battle, the Director wields a large axe that resembles the Blade, with a black shield in his left hand. He is also protected by four Poundettes, the strongest version of the Mad Mallet enemy. After the Director and the Poundettes are defeated, Princess Peach admits that she was scared when he gave the threat.
In Super Mario-kun (volume 51, chapter 14), the Director is the only one met in the Factory. He kindly presents himself to the heroes and offers them some drinks: trusting him, Mario, Bowser, Peach, and Mallow accept the drinks, only to discover that they had been spiked with poison, though Mario is unaffected by it. Right then, Smithy appears, and the Director exits from the scene, never to be seen again. In the manga, the Director's body is not seen (the feet and arms are directly connected to the head) and two big eyes are shown behind his helmet.

Notes[edit ]
- Originally, the Director was one of three bosses (not counting tutorial fights) to use the standard battle theme. However, he no longer holds this distinction when fought in the remake, as he, the Clerk, and Manager have the boss theme.
