- —Yoshi Kid, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
The Yoshi Kid,[1] also known as Mini-Yoshi,[2] is Mario's fourth party member in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door . The Yoshi Kid is a spunky Yoshi baby and the youngest of Mario's party members, being newborn. His purpose in the overworld is to allow Mario to ride him to travel around much faster and use a Flutter Jump–like ability to cross gaps.
The Yoshi Kid is named by the player within the text space of eight characters, which incidentally makes "Yoshi Kid" and "Mini-Yoshi" too long to fit. The default name is simply "Yoshi", which is used in most appearances.
General information[edit ]
Physical description[edit ]
The Yoshi Kid's coloration is determined by the amount of time that passes between the point where his egg joins Mario's party atop the Hot Dog Stand to when Mario eventually meets the newborn after fleeing from or losing to The Iron Adonis Twins. Initially, the Yoshi Kid is green, has a red mohawk, and wears orange pants with white polka dots (giving it a Yoshi's Egg–like pattern) and a pair of his species' signature boots. While the Yoshi Kid is in his egg, however, his color scheme changes every few minutes, as shown in the chart below. If more than 20 minutes pass before the Yoshi Kid hatches, the cycle restarts. Each coloration is for aesthetic purposes only, and it stays the same for the rest of the game upon the Yoshi Kid's hatching.
| Time | Color |

| 0–6 minutes | Sprite of the green Yoshi Kid from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Green |

History[edit ]
Paper Mario series[edit ]
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit ]
While Mario, Goombella, Koops, and Flurrie are fighting in Glitzville's Glitz Pit, they find that one of the fighting teams, The Iron Adonis Twins, appears to be impervious to any attack they use. At an earlier time, Mario had found a Yoshi's Egg bouncing around, being chased by an owner of the Hot Dog Stand, Mr. Hoggle (who had hopes of making a Southern Fried Egg Dog of Tastiness with it). After Mario caught the egg, it jumped onto a roof of the Hot Dog Stand, requiring Mario to glide down to the roof to recover the egg; Goombella's Tattle on the egg is viewable before Mario interacts with the egg. Mr. Hoggle allowed Mario to keep the egg as most people "don't like eating stuff that jumps all over the place." Following this, the living and bouncy egg joined Mario's party.
After Mario returns from his problematic battle with The Iron Adonis Twins, the egg hatches into a newborn Yoshi baby, who thanks Mario for saving his life. He then joins Mario (whom he knows as Gonzales), who proceeds to name him. The Yoshi Kid can defeat The Iron Adonis Twins by eating them and spitting them at each other, as the gulp attack ignores enemy defense. He travels with Mario for the rest of the game.
At the end of the adventure, the Yoshi Kid goes solo at the Glitz Pit, going under the name "The Great Gonzales Jr.," and is stated to be getting close to the title match. In Goombella's letter, the Yoshi Kid challenges the "Great Gonzales" by saying, "I could totally take you in the ring now, so bring it!" He calls Mario "Gonzales" throughout the entire course of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (in a manner similar to that of other non-player characters such as Goldbob and his family); his familiarity with this name is due to Mario's pseudonym, "Great Gonzales" (upon Grubba and Jolene's insistence), while fighting in the Glitz Pit. By the end of the game, though, the Yoshi Kid appears to have slowly realized that "Gonzales's" real name is Mario, but he states that Mario will always be Gonzales to him.
Super Paper Mario[edit ]
In Super Paper Mario , the Yoshi Kid appears as a Catch Card won by winning the Duel of 100 in the Sammer's Kingdom. Francis has a collection of seven Yoshi dolls, each one a different color. Lastly, the Yoshi Kid, along with all the other partners from the previous titles in the Paper Mario series, appears in a photograph at the Mario Bros.' House during the introduction.
Super Mario-kun[edit ]
This section needs Super Mario-kun improvement. Specifically:
- Role in story
The Yoshi Kid appears in the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door arc of Super Mario-kun as an ally of Mario.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl , there is a sticker that names the Yoshi Kid "Yoshi," while in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , there is a trophy of him that names him "Mini-Yoshi," the first game to give him this name.
Super Mario Run[edit ]
The Yoshi Kid had a minor cameo in Super Mario Run (ver. 3.2.0) on promotional artwork in the game during its celebration of the release of the remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, though his presence on the in-game alert for the event was his only appearance in the game.
Nintendo Music[edit ]

Notes[edit ]
- The Yoshi Kid calls Mario by his real name prior to the ending five times in the Nintendo GameCube version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, seemingly due to localization errors:
- In Grubba's office when reading the Dubious Documents about the machine under the ring
- In Twilight Town when the Creepy Steeple bell rings and changes Mayor Dour into a pig
- At Keelhaul Key after Frankie says, "I love you," 100 times to Francesca
- At the very end of Chapter 5 when Frankie and Francesca say they are staying on Keelhaul Key
- If Mario brings him along to the top of the Palace of Shadow Tower for the first time
- The Yoshi Kid is one of two Yoshis that can be seen outside battle in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door; the other is an adult seen on the Excess Express after Chapter 6.
- During the second boss fight against Doopliss, the enemy name will always be simply "Yoshi" regardless of what the player named him.
- Wonky in the Italian version of the game refers to the Yoshi Kid specifically as a "Miniyoshi," explaining that Miniyoshis are "Yoshis just hatched from the eggs." This aligns with his Japanese name, which is identical to Baby Yoshi, along with other localizations and in-game text in the English version referring to him as a "newborn Yoshi baby."
