- “Will my loved ones become swine? Will I, too, become a curly-tailed oinker? I'm so worried, I can't sleep at night.”
- —Mayor Dour , Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Pigs are a species which appear in Chapter 4 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door . They are the cursed forms assumed by various NPCs in Twilight Town.
A Duplighost known as Doopliss enchants the bell of the Creepy Steeple so that every time it rings, a citizen of Twilight Town would be transformed into a Pig. Once he is defeated, everyone is turned back and pigs can no longer be encountered. Unlike most characters in the game, the pigs of Twilight Town are fully three-dimensional in nature, and are visually reminiscent of Li'l Oinks from Paper Mario , albeit with visible ears and tails as well as red eyes likely to denote their cursed status.
In the Nintendo Switch remake, Pigs bare a more prominent papercraft aesthetic to match the artstyle of later entries. A few pigs also appear in the reworked credits sequence.

- The title of the chapter in which these events take place is called "For Pigs the Bell Tolls", which is a reference to the novel written by Ernest Hemingway called For Whom the Bell Tolls .
- In Volume 7 of Super Mario-kun a disease known as Influenza tontonbū-gata causes the inhabitants of Mura Mura to transform into pigs, which is similar to the curse on the residents of Twilight Town.
