Snowmen, referred to as snowpeople in Mario Kart Tour ,[1] are signature course elements in the Mario Kart series introduced in Mario Kart 64 . They are peculiar to the series' snowscape courses, often appearing on the road as obstacles. The degree to which they impede drivers varies between games, sometimes completely bringing them to a halt, other times only reducing some of their speed. Aside from their appearances as course elements, one such snowman is notably included in Mario Kart World as a playable driver.
These snowmen are depicted with a two-segmented body, a scarf, a bucket worn as a hat, two beady eyes, and a carrot for a nose; while these attributes are common in most snowmen whether real or fictional, they are arranged in a particular and consistent fashion throughout the Mario Kart series, with both their segments being similar in size, and the bucket being placed to the side of their head. In all their appearances starting with Mario Kart DS , they also have a tiny smile, their bucket is blue, and their scarf is a warm color (orange or yellow), cementing a trademark look specific to the Mario Kart series.

Snowmen appear on courses such as N64 Frappe Snowland, GBA Snow Land, DS DK Pass, Vancouver Velocity R, Merry Mountain R/T in Mario Kart Tour , and Merry Mountain in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe . In Mario Kart: Double Dash!! , they are additionally part of the background in Sherbet Land, with the course's iteration in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe including them as obstacles in the off-road segments, allowing drivers to bump into them. Snowmen also appear in the battle course Sherbet Rink from Mario Kart 7 . If crashed into, snowmen commonly cause the player to be knocked backwards while dropping any items they have, but in Mario Kart Tour, they slow racers without crashing them. They can be destroyed by driving into them or hitting them with an item.

Snowman appears as a playable character in Mario Kart World , marking his playable debut in both the Mario Kart series and the first time a snowman of any kind has been playable in the Super Mario franchise as a whole. His emblem consists of a snowflake against a teal background. Snowmen also appear as obstacles in DK Pass, as in previous titles.
Snowman was initially an unlockable character, but was made available from the start following a software update. He shares statistics with Rosalina, Pauline, King Boo, Piranha Plant, Cataquack, and Conkdor.
