MC Ballyhoo , Mario Party 8

DK Spaces (formatted as DK spaces in Mario Party 5 ) are spaces in the Mario Party series. They are where Donkey Kong shows up if a character lands on one, and generally causes a positive effect. DK Spaces mainly serve as a counter to Bowser Spaces. Many show either Donkey Kong's mugshot (facing sideways or directly forwards) or the DK symbol.

History[edit ]

Mario Party 5[edit ]

The space first appears in Mario Party 5, which is also the first Mario Party game where Donkey Kong leaves the playable roster until his appearance in Mario Party 10 where he returns as a fully playable character. Only one DK space appears on each board, and it is placed on any existing blue space at the start of the board. Landing on a DK space triggers one of three events:

  • DK Bonus: Donkey Kong lets the player roll a dice block to get coins equal to the amount shown.
  • DK Minigame: All players participate in a minigame where they collect bananas. At the end, Donkey Kong gives everyone coins equal to the number of bananas that they got by once, twice, or even thrice (as he converts them into coins).
  • DK Roulette: Donkey Kong rolls a number on the dice block, and the player must roll a number higher than Donkey Kong's to get a star. If the player rolls the same number as DK or lower, they lose and get nothing. This is similar to the dice game on Goomba's Greedy Gala in Mario Party 4 , only that the player can roll the highest possible number (10) while DK cannot.

In Story Mode, if a Koopa Kid lands on a DK space, Donkey Kong punches the Koopa Kid, and make them lose half of their coins. If the player lands on a DK space, they earn 10 coins from Donkey Kong.

Mario Party 6[edit ]

In Mario Party 6 , more DK Spaces are placed on the board, but they are only around during the day, as they are replaced with Bowser Spaces at night. The DK Roulette event from Mario Party 5 has been removed, while the DK Bonus event now allows the player to possibly win a Star or more coins than in Mario Party 5. The DK Bonus now involves a Dice Block shaped like a barrel called a "Dice Barrel". DK Minigames work the same as in Mario Party 5.

There are no DK Spaces or Bowser Spaces in Clockwork Castle due to Donkey Kong and Bowser appearing on the board. Additionally, this is the only game where DK Spaces are yellow-orange instead of blue and the last one to use DK's face as the space's emblem.

Mario Party 7[edit ]

In Mario Party 7 , only the DK Minigame event appears. Players can only earn their prizes from the DK Spaces by minigames alone. In this game, there are two types of Minigames — single-player and multiplayer. In single-player, players have to beat Donkey Kong to the goal in order to earn 20 coins, 30 coins, or even a Star (10 coins in Solo Cruise). If Donkey Kong wins, they receive nothing. However, the exception is Windmillville where it can only be 20 or 30 coins for single-player due to the unorthodox method of stealing stars there. Multiplayer works the same as it did in the last two installments.

Mario Party 8[edit ]

In Mario Party 8 , whenever someone lands on the space, Donkey Kong appears to do something helpful, with a different method for each board, usually the opposite of whatever that board's Bowser Space will do. In this game, the DK Space alternates with the Bowser Space, meaning that when one lands on the DK Space, after the event is over, it will be replaced with a Bowser Space and vice-versa. Also, the shape of the space is different with each board, including the tutorial. This time around, all three of the DK events from the previous three installments are gone (the DK Roulette, DK Bonus, and DK Minigame).

The following events occur on each board:

  • DK's Treetop Temple : Donkey Kong tosses the player directly to the Star. However, the player still has to trade 20 coins for the star. This is similar to the Magic Lamp and Flutter Orb from past installments.
  • Goomba's Booty Boardwalk : Donkey Kong tells the player to deposit 5 coins into a DK Barrel. The player then shakes the barrel as much as they can within a few seconds to earn back more coins (the player can earn back 11 to 25 coins). If the player has no coins, Donkey Kong gives them 10 coins as a gift.
  • King Boo's Haunted Hideaway : Donkey Kong covers all of the pitfalls with special platforms. The first player to reach a pitfall will receive a free Star from Donkey Kong before being sent back to the start via a Warp Pipe at the back. The platforms will also disappear once King Boo shuffles the house, or whenever someone lands on a Bowser Space.
  • Shy Guy's Perplex Express : Donkey Kong's Barrel Train will overtake the current locomotive. Donkey Kong will then give a free Star to the first player that reaches him. He doubles the player's coin total in Star Battle Arena (dependent on the number of coins that the player has when they reach him) and then leaves. However, if the player has zero coins, Donkey Kong gives them 10 coins. The Barrel Train will also leave if someone lands on a Bowser Space.
  • Koopa's Tycoon Town : Donkey Kong deposits 20 coins into one of the five main hotels (three on Star Battle Arena) on the player's (or team's) behalf. In Battle Royale and Tag Battle, if the player (or team) has invested 100 coins in all five main hotels, Donkey Kong will instead deposit 20 coins to a hotel in a Lucky Space area. If the player (or team) has invested 100 coins in all seven hotels, Donkey Kong will do nothing.
  • Bowser's Warped Orbit : Donkey Kong gives the player a free star (a free piece of candy in Star Battle Arena).

Mario Party 9[edit ]

In Mario Party 9 , DK Spaces appear only on the board DK's Jungle Ruins. When landed upon, the Bananas and Z-Bananas rotate around the stage in an event called Banana Spin Wheel. The bananas rotate until the captain presses A Button. When this happens, the captain can keep any bananas that flies past after the rotation is stopped.
