Character Spaces are spaces in the Mario Party series, making their debut in Mario Party 6 and returning in Mario Party 7 . Character Spaces are derived from Capsule Spaces from the previous installment, Mario Party 5 , while Hexes from Mario Party DS is a continuation of this game mechanic. Players or teams mark Character Spaces by placing one of their Orbs on a space on the board. The owner of the spaces are indicated by a silhouette of the character in Mario Party 6 free-for-all, the emblem of the character in Mario Party 7 free-for-all, or the team the player belongs to in tag team battles for both games.
There are two variants of Character Spaces:
- Character Spaces that come from Yellow Orbs remain on the board until they get replaced by another thrown Orb, a Star Space appears on it, Bowser destroys the bridge containing them during Bowser Time events in specific boards, or they are taken by Yoshi or Birdo under the effects of the Egg Orb. Opponents who land here trigger the Orb, and they have to give whatever the space requests to the owner or the team of that space. Players or the players' allies that land on their own Character Space receive five coins. If the coins' ×ばつ3 roulette in the Last 5 Turns (Mario Party 6) or Last 4 Turns (Mario Party 7) events was picked, the owners of the space receive 15 coins.
- Roadblock variants, also known as Character Symbols in Mario Party 7, are temporary traps set for the opponent via Red Orbs. In Mario Party 6, their owner is shown by a fainter version of the character's or team's symbol hovering slightly above them in Mario Party 6, while in Mario Party 7, the owner's symbol is instead placed directly on the space, surrounded by a forcefield. Any rival that passes an opponent's roadblock triggers the trap, unless they are under the effects of an orb that counters this. Once a roadblock is triggered, it disappears. Players or allies that pass their own Roadblocks are unaffected. Unlike with Character Spaces, opponents cannot replace roadblocks. In a team battle in Mario Party 7, roadblocks strike their targeted team's leader, then the follower in order. Unlike Character Spaces, owners who land on the roadblock receive the effects of the original space.
Koopa Kid Spaces are a special type of Character Space in Mario Party 7 which appear only when a player obtains a Koopa Kid Orb where Koopa Kid forcibly uses it for them or during one of the Last Four Turns Events. Like other Character Spaces, they can be replaced by other Orbs. Three are randomly placed by Bowser in the beginning of every game.
In Mario Party 6, one of the Last Five Turns Events adds five random Character Spaces for the last place player to the board. In E. Gadd's Garage, one of the ? Spaces allow players or team to add up to five random Character Spaces to the board for a price. These can include roadblocks.
