Orbs are special items found in the Mario Party series. Hexes from Mario Party DS are similar, in that they can be laid down on spaces. The design of the orbs is based on that of gashapon capsules. The orbs in Mario Party 5 are also obtained similarly to a gashapon dispenser where the player can receive a random capsule from the machine.

History[edit ]

Mario Party 5[edit ]

Orbs first appear in Mario Party 5 , where they are referred to as capsules, per their Japanese name. Players can choose to receive a random capsule from a capsule machine for free, instead of purchasing items from shops from earlier Mario Party games. Players can throw a capsule up to ten spaces ahead, where the space will become a Capsule Space. Thereafter, any player landing on that space will be subjected to the effect. Since capsules cannot be thrown behind, there is a chance the player who threw the capsule lands on the capsule space they set in the same turn.

Players can also use all capsules on themselves, including harmful ones. As a consequence for receiving capsules for free, players who want to use capsules on themselves need to spend coins, with more coins requiring to be spent for rarer capsules such as the Chain Chomp Capsule. For example, a player can use a Mushroom Capsule for five coins, then immediately roll two Dice Blocks.

Bowser Capsules are a special capsule that is one of the randomly given capsules. Unlike other capsules, its effects are triggered immediately: Bowser appears and causes a minus space to turn into a Bowser Space, which lasts for the duration of the match.

Mario Party 6 / Mario Party 7[edit ]

Orbs are available in Mario Party 6 and Mario Party 7 . Specific Orbs can be purchased from an Orb hut, and random ones can be obtained from Orb Spaces for free whenever a player passes one. Some Orbs, such as the Mushroom Orb, can be used on the player, always for free. Some Orbs, such as the Spear Guy Orb, can be thrown onto a space to create a Character Space. Orbs can be thrown up to five spaces ahead or backward. Unlike with a Capsule Space, a character is immune to the negative effects of the spaces they (or their teammates) create; instead, they earn five coins for landing on them. Some Orbs, such as the Zap Orb, can be thrown onto a space to create a Roadblock. Roadblocks affect any player who passes by the space (not just those who land on it), and the effects occur immediately, though, unlike other Character Spaces, the space will revert to normal after activating once. Players are immune to the effects of Roadblocks they place.
