The Gaddlight (or Gadd Light),[1] known as the Boo-Away Orb in its Orb form seen in Mario Party 6 , is an item that appears in the Mario Party series. It is a flashlight that can be used to prevent Boo from stealing from its holder, much like the Boo Repellant from Mario Party 3 . The Snack Orb is another similar item, particularly in its Mario Party 5 incarnation as the Bone Capsule.
History[edit ]
Mario Party 4[edit ]
The Gaddlight first appears in Mario Party 4, where it can be bought from an Item Shop for 15 coins. CPU players will never buy a Gaddlight.[2] When a player carrying a Gaddlight in their inventory is targeted by an opponent to have Boo steal coins or a Star from that player, the player automatically uses and consumes the Gaddlight, flashing the Boo with the item's light to scare it away. The targeted player character is seen standing and holding the Gaddlight within the Boo's Crystal Ball, rather than the usual "scared" pose used when Boo steals from a player. A player carrying a Gaddlight can use it on their turn to throw it away, though this counts as the single item use that players are allowed per turn. The Gaddlight does not protect against Big Boo in Boo's Haunted Bash.
As the item's English name implies, the Gaddlight was invented by Professor E. Gadd,[1] alluding to his occupation as a ghost hunter and researcher in Luigi's Mansion . This is also implied by the item's German name, Deppweg 08/18, since it aligns with the names of his other inventions, Schreckweg 08/16 (Poltergust 3000) and Dreckweg 08/17 (F.L.U.D.D.). However, this connection is not present in the item's Japanese name, and it lacks the symbol of his head that is seen on most of his inventions.
Mario Party 6[edit ]
- “Hey! Nobody told me about a Boo-away Orb! Pshhaa! That is, like, SO unfair!”
- —Pink Boo , Mario Party 6
The Gaddlight reappears in Mario Party 6, now in Orb form as the Boo-Away Orb. The item contained within the Orb retains a similar appearance to its appearance in Mario Party 4, and its Japanese name refers to the Gaddlight. The Boo-Away Orb retains the Gaddlight's effects from Mario Party 4, though it now protects against Pink Boo instead of the ordinary Boo, as Pink Boo has replaced Boo's role in the game, with Boo instead being a playable character. The Boo-Away Orb is obtainable only in Towering Treetop and Castaway Bay, as those are the only boards on which Pink Boo can be found.
