Undodog (also formatted as Undo Dog) is a supporting character who debuts in Mario Paint . He is a big-headed tan colored dog with pointed ears and a collar-like square box around his neck. The box was originally black but was changed white from Super Mario Maker onward to resemble an Elizabethan collar.

History[edit ]

Mario Paint[edit ]

Undodog
Sprite of Undodog (left) with his icon (right)

Undodog is selectable as an icon in the bottom toolbox in the Art and Music modes of Mario Paint. He dances and jump around at the bottom of the screen when the player is idle in the stamp editor or drawing board color selection. Undodog quickly returns to his original location if the player moves the mouse. In the Art mode's music selection menu, Undodog wearing a surgical face mask represents the "no music" option. If the player turns off the music and leaves it silent, Undodog will sometimes sneeze loudly, due to having allergies.[1]

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit ]

Undodog reappears in Super Mario Maker and its port, namely as an icon that the player can select to undo a function, like before. Besides this, Undodog makes various other appearances: alongside Mary O. and Yamamura; riding a Reset Rocket in the background of Course World; when the player completes the 10-Mario or 100-Mario Challenge; and in the corner during Gnat Attack, barking and jumping excitedly when only ten seconds remain. Shaking the heart SFX turns the icon into Undodog wearing a surgical face mask, creating a brief static with a buzzing sound followed by the course's music turned off temporarily or permanent instead if it is equipped to Mario, a throwback to Mario Paint where the bottom lever in the background music option has a similar appearance and effect when selected. The Undodog costume can be unlocked by completing the event course "Walkin' with Undodog."

Super Mario Maker 2[edit ]

Undodog
The 3D model of Undodog introduced in the story mode of Super Mario Maker 2.

Undodog reappears in Super Mario Maker 2 . Undodog is the catalyst for the story mode's events, when he presses the Reset Rocket button on the ground accidentally, completely erasing Peach's Castle. He is still a supporting character, giving Mario access to various jobs to help rebuild the castle. Ironically, Undodog talks to Mario as if he were a pet, also referring to him as a "good boy," whilst Mario uses a canine onomatopoeia like "woof" and "bark". There is a scene in the ending where Undodog goes over to the Reset Rocket, looking at it happily while everyone gasps off-screen, but Undodog does not activate it. Most themes feature Undodog riding the Reset Rocket in the background of nighttime levels.[2]

In the post-game, Undodog can be paid 100 coins to tell one of ten jokes, causing the music to fade out and the "Guffaw" sound effect to play. Most jokes reference several in-game Course Maker elements, which are emphasized in blue, and once Undodog has no more jokes left, the player can hear a random one again for free.

  • "Why are ? Blocks so good at holding power-ups? Because they have so mushroom inside!"
  • "Where do Bowser's minions keep their chickens? In a chicken koopa!"
  • "What do you call a sad Dry Bones? A Cry Bones!"
  • "Whaddaya call a four-legged ghost with antlers? A Scare-A-Boo!"
  • "Why didn't Mario enter the Pipe in the desert? Because it was PIPING HOT!"
  • "Why is the Angry Sun so angry? Somebody ate all of its desert!"
  • "What do you call an aspiring Mario Maker? An up-and-plumber!"
  • "I just told some of my jokes at a Ghost House. They kept shouting "BOO! BOOOOOOO!"
  • "Why didn't Bowser replace his cracked fishbowl? He's too Cheep Cheep!"
  • "Why did the Lakitu record itself catching a squid? For the Blooper reel!"

WarioWare series[edit ]

Undodog cameos in the Mario Paint microgame of WarioWare: Touched! and in the Mario Paint microgame of WarioWare: D.I.Y. , the latter depicting his icon.

Naming[edit ]

"Undodog" is a pun on the word "underdog", and a portmanteau of the words "undo" and "dog", since his main role is undoing actions done by the player.[3]

Notes[edit ]

  • In the patents for Mario Factory , a dog's head appears as a button in Figures 8 and 11, and is specified as an "Undo" button as Icon 88.[35]
  • The Mario Artist series also uses a dog's head as the "undo" icon in reference to Undodog. The dog here is different than Undodog, resembling a beagle instead.
  • While Undodog himself does not appear in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , his sneezing sound effect is incorporated into the "Mario Paint Medley" music track.
