- —IDLE, Mario & Luigi: Brothership
IDLE is a group of characters who appear in Mario & Luigi: Brothership . They are a team of four Concordian children who all reside on Desolatt Island, each with a yellow-orange scarf tied around a different part of their body. Its name is an acronym made up of the initials of their members:
- Ireen, a short, pink Concordian who wears her scarf as a hair bow, and is the self-proclaimed leader of the group. She fought the other IDLE members one-on-one to get them to join her team, forming IDLE.
- Dulles, a lanky, green Concordian with his scarf tied around his antenna.
- Loog, a short, blue Concordian wearing his scarf as a bandana. He also proclaims himself as the leader of the group.
- Ellow, a stocky, yellow Concordian wearing his scarf as a sack that is tied underneath his head.
Princess Peach, Starlow, and Dorrie join the group after the Color-Full Sea, Great Lighthouse Island is relit; Peach wears her scarf around her right arm, and Dorrie wears one around its neck, but Starlow does not wear one.
History[edit ]
Mario and Luigi first encounter IDLE on Desolatt Island. The group initially sees the Bros. as a threat as they trespass on their turf; after the group messes up their introduction and argues, the Bros. grow bored and begin to leave. Seeing the Snaptors steal several Concordians from the island, IDLE learn that the Bros. are headed for the lighthouse to save them and agree to show them the way on the condition that the Bros. find all of the members save for Ireen in a game of hide and seek. Each member hides in a different spot: Dulles has fallen into a green building to the northeast, requiring the Bros. to navigate through a maze of holes and stairs to find him; Loog hides in a blue building to the north with a dark interior that the Bros. must navigate by hitting light switches with their hammers; and Ellow is stuck in a doorway in a yellow building to the west, requiring the Bros. to pass through a building further west and push him out from the other side through Luigi Logic.
Once these three are found, IDLE open the gate, and Ireen and Loog race off. They soon find the Extension Corps atop the lighthouse, with Ireen mentioning having seen them prowling around town. After the Bros. defeat Ten and obtain the Battle Plugs, IDLE warm up to Mario and Luigi, with Ireen pondering her desire to help many people.
After Mario and Luigi link Desolatt Island, the group visit Shipshape Island to discuss the Extension Corps, as well as the Snaptors that are kidnapping the people of Concordia. When Connie asks who they are, Snoutlet introduces them as "some idle kids", to which IDLE dissent. Later, after Starlow washes up on Shipshape Island, the Bros. can speak with IDLE, where they express their desire to chase down the Extension Corps, thus beginning the Zokket's Schemes side quest. However, as IDLE do not want to get in the Bros.' way, they send the Bros. to Minmin Islet on their behalf.
Upon the Bros.' return to Shipshape after meeting with Technikki and Princess Peach, Ireen, Dulles, and Loog greet Peach, eager to join in her and Technikki's note comparison. Peach asks who they are, to which IDLE introduce themselves. Peach then mentions Ireen has great spirit, causing Ireen to think about Peach being classy and nice and wanting to be like her. Ellow then joins the group. During the meeting, Ireen states that a schemer is likely behind the scheme, with Technikki mentioning Zokket and the Extension Corps as likely suspects. Peach then volunteers to get kidnapped, to everyone's shock. The four members of IDLE also attempt to volunteer, with Peach and Luigi being the only two the player can choose to investigate. The group then goes to Merrygo Island, where the captive is taken to Lottacoins Island via Snaptor. IDLE sees the captive off alongside the rest of the group, to which Ireen states she aspires to be as brave. Loog expresses his hope that the plan goes well, with Connie reassuring him.
The Mario Bros. can optionally return to Desolatt Island to speak with a Concordian who has lost a brooch given to her by her daughter, beginning the Back to IDLE's Roots side quest. Once the Bros. find the brooch and return it to the Concordian, she reveals that her daughter is Ireen. A flashback then starts, showing the four members of IDLE striking their poses. Ireen then states that she battled the other three one-on-one so that they could join her team, then vows that they will protect Desolatt Island. Someone calls out from offscreen about laundry, to which IDLE rush off to help. When Ireen returns, she hands her mom the brooch so she can remember the day forever and tells her not to lose it. After the flashback ends, Ireen's mom adds that she received the brooch due to being sad over losing another one she liked.
The IDLE group arrive on Lottacoins Island shortly after Mario (and Luigi, if Peach was kidnapped) blasts there via Shipshape Island's Cannon, where they tag along to search for the captive. Ireen, Dulles, and Ellow all head in separate directions, leaving Loog behind. He cries out that he is the boss, not Ireen, before running off. IDLE follow Mario into the main building, where they comment on the captive's signal being blocked and the locked gate on the first floor before the four of them split up again. After the player visits the area on the second floor blocked off by a Concordian, Ireen mentions some plans to the group, and they begin tricking the Concordian by pestering him. He tells them not to cry and takes them back to the lobby, allowing the player to proceed past where the Concordian stood. When the code for the first floor is correctly entered, IDLE plead the gatekeeper to step aside and let them save the captive, to which the gatekeeper obliges. After finding the captive behind bars on the fourth floor, IDLE become terrified, then run off to try to solve the second set of clues to no avail. Ireen and Loog go near the potted plants from the second clue, Dulles goes on the third floor and mentions using the wall camera there for the fourth clue, and Ellow goes near the columns from the third clue in the hallway to the right.
After Peach informs the Bros. about the Extension Corps, IDLE rush in, minus Ellow, who has been kidnapped by the Extension Corps. Ireen mentions them being seen on the roof. Once Mario and Luigi reach the roof, Ireen, Dulles, and Loog catch up to them; Loog rushes toward the Extension Corps and repeatedly punches Shun to no effect, and Shun knocks him away. Ten states that Ellow will be one of the people working on Great Lighthouse Island, but he turns around to find him reunited with IDLE. Ecks then sends in a Mega Snaptor to fight the Mario Bros. After it is defeated, IDLE watch alongside the Bros. as the Extension Corps fly off.
Upon returning to Shipshape, the Mario Bros. speak with IDLE, with Ireen asking if the four of them are helping. Peach responds that they absolutely are, with Ellow stating it felt like they were in the way. Ireen then asks Peach to help them so that they can prove themselves. Peach decides to think about it, and Ireen hands her a scarf much like the ones IDLE wear, saying it will make her an honorary member. Peach thanks Ireen, and the Uni-Tree grows.
Someone on the beach then interrupts, which IDLE run off to check. They realize it is a Dorrie, and Peach approaches it, despite a Concordian telling her not to do so. In response, Peach reassures them that Dorrie is friendly. Ireen also runs up to Dorrie as Dulles warns her, and she points out Dorrie is hurt. Peach suggests finding medicine, and Ireen states that they can find Bond Ore on Desolatt Island. After Peach leaves, Ireen encourages Loog to come with her to Desolatt while Dulles and Ellow stay behind to check on Dorrie. Though Dulles is startled and let down by this prospect, Ellow finds Dorrie cute. The optional side quest It's Dorrie! then begins.
Upon arriving on Desolatt Island, the Mario Bros. intervene after a shady salesman tries to take Peach's crown in exchange for the Bond Ore. A Snaptor suddenly swoops in and kidnaps the salesman, but Loog jumps down from some scaffolding onto the Snaptor, causing the Snaptor to release its grip but also hurting him. Ireen then jumps down and knocks the Snaptor away with a Flying Snaptor Smacker move, and she asks the salesman if he is okay. As the Snaptor is not defeated, Mario and Luigi must beat it in a battle against two Snaptors and two Drillbies. After this, Ireen threatens to call back the Snaptor if the salesman does not give them the Bond Ore for 5 coins. The salesman panics and hands over the Bond Ore, with Loog declaring that no swindlers are allowed on IDLE's island before the salesman escapes.
The group return to Shipshape, where Ireen uses the Bond Ore to heal Dorrie. She states that the Dorrie wants to join their crew and gives it a scarf its size knitted by her mom. Peach thanks the group, and IDLE strike their signature poses, thus completing the side quest.
When Mario and Luigi return from meeting Connie on Allsand Island, Zokket appears and antagonizes the group; in response, IDLE tell Zokket to back off, with Ireen vowing that she will beat him someday. Soon after, Technikki finishes building the rocket with the Stickem Oil the Bros. found, and the four Concordian members agree to ride the rocket directly into the barrier surrounding the Color-Full Sea's Great Lighthouse. Ellow holds the rocket directly, while the rest of the members hold onto his back. It is later revealed that they survived the impact of the crash after Mario and Luigi land on the island. Connie then compliments IDLE on their bravery and advises them to rest up.
After the Great Lighthouse Island for the Color-Full Sea is lit, IDLE arrive on Dorrie's back, with Ireen stating that Dorrie has healed thanks to the medicine. Peach and Starlow then arrive, and Starlow reveals that the two are going with IDLE to help save Concordia. Though Snoutlet tries to join them, Starlow tells Snoutlet that his job is to look after Mario and Luigi.
If the Bros. choose Adaphne's upgrade for Shipshape Island, the group waits on Jellyfish Island per Adaphne's demands, and later along with Peach, Starlow, Dorrie, and Technikki, save Mario, Luigi, and Cozette as Fortress Zokket transforms into the Soli-Tree. If Technikki's upgrade is chosen, the group help operate the engine while Adaphne instead saves Mario, Luigi, and Cozette from Fortress Zokket.
Later, after Zokket meets his demise, Cozette is saved, and Reclusa is unleashed. IDLE is among those who manages to avoid getting trapped in Reclusa's flowers. Everyone in the group except Loog gets separated and has to be found on Shrimpee Islet and Mykroh Islet, with their Bond being collected afterward. This Bond is one of the Bonds necessary for breaching the barrier that Reclusa sets up around the Soli-Tree.
During the end of the game, the group says their goodbyes along with the rest of the cast. They are later shown posing in front of a Concordian child in Allsand Island during the credits.
