Banktoad, Super Mario Galaxy 2

Brigade Green Toad,[1] originally referred to as Banktoad, is a green Toad who is a member of the Toad Brigade. He has a great love for Star Bits and can often be found in many different galaxies where he can usually be seen digging for coins. Originally unnamed, Brigade Green Toad receives his initial title of Banktoad in Super Mario Galaxy 2 for his duty of managing Star Bits in the original version of that game.

History[edit ]

Super Mario series[edit ]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit ]

Banktoad first appears unnamed in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port, as the green Toad member of the Toad Brigade. During the annual Star Festival, Bowser attacks the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnaps Princess Peach, inadvertently abducting Luigi and the Toad Brigade as well. Luckily, Mario comes across the Toad Brigade during the first mission in the Honeyhive Galaxy, after which they follow him back to the Comet Observatory. Once there, they construct a small spaceship called the Starshroom with the help of some of the Lumas onboard the Comet Observatory. After this, they use the spaceship to travel across the universe in order to help Mario or Luigi recover the lost Power Stars. The green Toad can be found with the Toad Brigade in various galaxies throughout the game. He can usually be seen exploring the area, digging for coins with his pickaxe, or otherwise giving Mario helpful hints regarding his quest.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit ]

The green Toad brigade member returns in Super Mario Galaxy 2 , now named Banktoad. He first appears after the player collects seven Power Stars, and can be used to store Star Bits on a regular basis. He can hold up to 9999 Star Bits. This is one of the requirements in order to access the Prankster Comet in Grandmaster Galaxy. Banked Star Bits collect interest overtime and are available across multiple save files. Banktoad also gives the player extra Star Bits every time they complete a mission, corresponding with the ones digit of how many Star Bits they obtained in that mission. Depending on how many Star Bits Banktoad is holding, Banktoad's appearance will change accordingly:

  • 0-999: Banktoad holds a white Star Bit with both his hands.
  • 1000-1999: He wears glasses with his hands empty like Blue Toad.
  • 2000-3999: He begins carrying a round shield with the image of Princess Peach's emblem on the front and a spear nearly twice as tall as himself.
  • 4000-5999: Banktoad slings a pickaxe over his left shoulder.
  • 6000-7999: He puts on goggles and a snorkel that look identical to the ones Mailtoad sometimes wears in water levels (especially Purple Coin missions).
  • 8000-9999: Banktoad attaches the flashlight part of a miner's helmet to a strap he places around his head like Captain Toad.

In the game's Nintendo Switch port, Banktoad no longer stores the player's Star Bits. Instead, he simply informs the player about amiibo when spoken to. His appearance is no longer determined by the number of Star Bits held, and now changes each time the player speaks to him after scanning an amiibo. These follow a preset cycle matching the order seen in the original game and beginning with him holding a Star Bit.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit ]

Banktoad in Super Mario Odyssey

Banktoad appears again in Super Mario Odyssey . He continues to wear the explorer's outfit he gained in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker , although he gains a pith helmet to wear over his mushroom cap. He can first be found running the Crazy Cap location on the Lost Kingdom's Rocky Mountain Summit, with fellow Toad Brigade members Yellow Toad and Mailtoad acting as the store's clerks. Once Mario has cleared all story objectives in Bowser's Kingdom, Banktoad will appear at the starting gate next to a Warp Pipe informing him of a shortcut to the Inner Wall. He also appears on an expedition to the Dark Side with the other Toads after the objective Arrival at Rabbit Ridge! is complete, where he is near the spark pylon leading to Rabbit Ridge Tower and informs Mario that the Broodals may still be fought although the Power Moons atop the tower have already been collected.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit ]

Banktoad is a playable character in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury . He can be played in the Captain Toad's Adventures levels, but only as P3. He has the same appearance as in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. In Bowser's Fury , Banktoad is one of the four Toads who must be found to receive a Cat Shine, and he is on a small island near Crisp Climb Castle.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park[edit ]

Brigade Green Toad appears in Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park under his current name. He generally appears in all the secluded areas that Captain Toad originally appeared in the original Nintendo Switch edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and will reward players with 50 flower coins as Captain Toad did. He will occasionally appear in Camp Central of Bellabel Park as well.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit ]

Banktoad also appears in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker . While he does not appear to play the role of a Banktoad in this game, he proves to be a hardworking Toad and is often seen investigating various maps in certain levels. He wears attire similar to Captain Toad with the uniform and backpack for collecting treasure.

Banktoad directly helps Captain Toad in certain situations in which he could follow behind the Captain alongside the other members of the Toad Brigade to help him reach difficult areas in order to find treasure and to snag the Power Star.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit ]

Banktoad appears with the Toad Brigade in a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , and all of them are depicted with their Super Mario Galaxy design.

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "notes" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.
