Fox McCloud, also known as simply Fox, is the main protagonist of the Star Fox series who has appeared in the Super Mario franchise mostly in a variety of cameos. He is the leader of a space mercenary team known as Star Fox, which works to save the Lylat System from various threats, especially Andross. His most prominent appearance in the Super Mario franchise is in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , where he is a major character and is voiced by Glen Powell.
History[edit ]
Club Nintendo[edit ]
Fox appears in the German Club Nintendo comic "Super Mario: Mario im Wunderland", where he introduces himself as "the fox from the TV spot". He lands on Earth with his spaceship and scares away Donkey Kong, Wario, and Bowser, who attacked Mario, Toad, Kirby, and Yoshi.
He also appears in "Super Mario: Verloren in der Zeit" briefly, watching the Olympics with Peppy Hare and Falco.
Super Mario-kun[edit ]
Fox and Slippy appear briefly in a side panel of volume 7 of Super Mario-kun , wondering about the location of the Arwing stolen by the collector.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]
Super Smash Bros.[edit ]
- SmashWiki article: Fox (SSB)
Fox is a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. He is a fast character who has the fastest falling speed and air speed, as well as running speed that falls behind only Captain Falcon. For his special moves, Fox has Blaster for his standard special move, in which he shoots a laser; Reflector as his down special move, in which he deflects items; and his recovery is Fire Fox, in which Fox charges forward while surrounded in fire. His voice clips are from Shinobu Satouchi.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit ]
- SmashWiki article: Fox (SSBM)
Fox returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee . His added side special move is Fox Illusion, which involves Fox performing a quick, horizontal dash. Fox's Blaster shoots faster than before though no longer inflicts any hitstun or knockback. Fox is one of the lighter fighters, making him vulnerable to being launched. Fox's forward aerial now involves several roundhouse kicks. Fox now has the slowest air speed, and all of Fox's throws involve him using his Blaster, except for the forward throw.
Fox, like Falco, has Smash Taunts that can be initiated on Corneria or Venom, where he and the Star Fox team communicate wirelessly. Fox is voiced in the English release by Steve Malpass, who would portray him in Star Fox Adventures .
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit ]
- SmashWiki article: Fox (SSBB)
Fox is once again playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and is designed after his appearance in Star Fox Command . He is portrayed by Kenji Nojima in the Japanese release and by Jim Walker in Western releases. Fox's Final Smash is the Landmaster, in which he leaps up and returns back down with the vehicle, using it to attack opponents. Fox receives a different, unique Smash Taunt on Lylat Cruise and retains the same one on the returning stage Corneria.
The Subspace Emissary[edit ]
Fox has interacted with Super Mario characters in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, especially Diddy Kong. Fox is first seen riding his Arwing in the beginning trying to take down the Halberd, however, the Arwing is hit and then crashes. It is later shown that the Arwing crash-landed at the edge of a jungle, near a lake. Diddy Kong discovers the Arwing, but Rayquaza rises from the lake and territorially attacks it. As Diddy is snatched up by the provoked Pokémon, Fox springs from the cockpit of the burning Arwing and proceeds to effortlessly rescue Diddy from the clutches of the large Pokémon using his Fox Illusion and Reflector. Fox and Diddy team up to defeat Rayquaza, and Fox winds up having to help Diddy in rescuing Donkey Kong from the Subspace Army. They eventually run into Bowser and fight him, but it turns out to be a False Bowser. The real Bowser appears firing his Dark Cannon at the two, prompting Fox to grab the vengeful Diddy and escape.
Some time passes, and Bowser attacks again, this time turning Diddy into a trophy. Fox, however, dodges the attacks fired at him, prompting Bowser to create a False Diddy Kong. Another Arwing suddenly flies by, and its pilot comes out of it, revealing himself to be Falco. Falco swiftly destroys Bowser's Dark Cannon and proceeds to help Fox and Diddy defeat the doppelganger as Bowser escapes.
Like Fox, Falco finds himself helping to find Donkey Kong, who they eventually discover being transported to the Isle of Ancients. After Falco assists Diddy in saving Donkey, Fox was not seen again until later, when Fox tries attacking the Halberd in his Arwing again. He is stopped by Zelda (disguised as Sheik), who was trying to protect Peach from Fox's fire. Peach settles the conflict between Sheik and Fox, but they are suddenly interrupted by Mr. Game & Watch flying from the ship's cockpit. Mr. Game & Watch almost immediately generates Shadow Bugs which turn him into Duon. Lucario and Snake jump from the cockpit and onto the bridge and Falco reappears to assist in Duon's defeat. Fox aims his Blaster at the Mr. Game & Watch trophy after the battle, but Mr. Game & Watch was then restored back to the original form and joins the team as Meta Knight takes back the ship.
Fox and the other heroes then join together as they enter Subspace and find Tabuu, who easily defeats them. Fox is revived by King Dedede, who had anticipated Tabuu's power and created badges that revive fighters that they were placed on. After Fox and everyone else is rescued, they proceed to face a final confrontation with Tabuu.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit ]
- SmashWiki article: Fox (SSB4)
Fox returns again in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U . His English voice actor is now done by Mike West, who first portrayed Fox in the English localization of Star Fox 64 . Fox also receives and alternate costume giving him the likeness of his rival, Wolf. Fox retains his Smash Taunt on Lylat Cruise in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and on Corneria in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS , and he is also part of the unique Smash Taunt featured in Orbital Gate Assault.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit ]
- SmashWiki article: Fox (SSBU)
Fox is playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , with a redesign based on his appearance in Star Fox Zero . Fox's Final Smash has been changed to Team Star Fox, where several Arwings are ordered by him to attack his opponents. In unlocalized versions, Fox is portrayed by Takashi Ōhara, who did so in unlocalized releases of Star Fox 64 3D and Star Fox Zero, though Mike West still portrays him in the English localization. Fox runs faster, though is now lighter than Kirby. Fox's forward aerial is nicknamed Tornado Kick, while his up aerial is McCloud Flip.
In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Fox appears in the opening cutscene with several other fighters, confronting Galeem and his army. Fox and every other fighter except Kirby are hit by beams, though it is not shown with Fox directly, forming puppet fighters of each character.
Fox's Classic Mode route is "Spaceborne Smash," featuring fighters relating to outer space. He engages in the following battles in the following order:
- Samus on Brinstar
- Rosalina & Luma on Mario Galaxy
- Meta Knight on Halberd
- Dark Samus on Frigate Orpheon
- Olimar on Distant Planet
- Wolf on Venom
- Final battle against Master Hand as well as Crazy Hand on intensity 7.0 or higher
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit ]
Fox makes a cameo appearance in Mario Kart 8 (from the version 3.0 update onwards) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe . An image of him appears in the amiibo menu, where the Fox amiibo can be scanned to unlock a Mii racing suit themed after him.
Super Mario Maker[edit ]
Fox appears as a costume for Costume Mario in Super Mario Maker , unlocked by either scanning his amiibo or at random by completing 100 Mario Challenge on Expert difficulty. The sound used when transforming into Fox is his radio voice clips from the original Star Fox; the "Mission Complete" theme from Star Fox plays when clearing a stage; and the sound effect for using a life is retained from Star Fox. Fox's taunt, activated by pressing +Control Pad up, plays General Pepper's "Good luck!" voice clip.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[edit ]
- “I only care about three things: keeping the Lylat System safe, fighting with my buds, and doing extreme...dangerous...barrell roooooooooolls!”
- —Fox , The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Fox McCloud makes his film debut in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , where he is voiced by Glen Powell.[1] He plays a major role in the film.[2] His poster depicts him in front of his Arwing and next to an Ukiki.
Fox is from an alternate universe where the rest of the Star Fox cast exist, such as Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad, separate from the universe of the Super Mario characters in the film series. The warp drive in his Arwing exploded while he was piloting it, ripping a hole in space-time and sending him to the Super Mario universe.
Fox is first encountered on the flight deck of the Gateway Galaxy while repairing his Arwing. He introduces himself, and agrees to take Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Toad to the Space Junk Galaxy to rescue Rosalina. After being intercepted by Bowser Jr., Fox lands a series of attacks on his Spaceship; however, Baby Mario and Luigi interfere with the Arwing's controls, forcing him to crashland it in Fossil Falls. Struggling to repair the Arwing, Fox laments about the bad condition of the vehicle before he is comforted by Yoshi and Toad. They are later rescued by Lumas in the Comet Observatory.
After arriving at the Space Junk Galaxy, Fox pilots the observatory towards Planet Bowser past the Koopa army's defense forces. After dropping off Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Yoshi onto the planet, he and Toad stay in the observatory, using it to lure away the remaining air defenses. They are not seen again until after Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr. are defeated, when Fox parks the observatory in front of the destroyed Boomsday Weapon, allowing the Lumas to reunite with Rosalina.
In a mid-credits scene, it is revealed that Rosalina repaired his warp drive. He pilots his repaired Arwing and warps back to his own universe after dropping the Bowsers off in prison.
Other appearances[edit ]
Fox is one of the characters in a commercial for the Super Comboy who is conducted by Mario alongside Yoshi, Peach, Bowser, and several other characters.[3]
A 3D render of Fox from Star Fox 64 can be used like a stamp in Mario Artist: Paint Studio . The names "Fox" and "McCloud" can be seen as separate items on the score chart in the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color versions of Mario Golf, and Fox appears as a badge in Donkey Konga 2 and Donkey Konga 3 .
Unused appearances[edit ]
Fox was one of the Nintendo protagonists who would have appeared in Starbeans Cafe in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga .
Profiles and statistics[edit ]
Super Smash Bros.[edit ]
Following his dead father's footsteps as the young leader of the Star Fox Team, Fox McCloud's piloting of the super-high-performance combat ship ARWING for the Lylatian System is still fresh in our memories. His one weakness may be his difficulty earning the trust of his teammates.

Palutena's Guidance[edit ]
- Pit : Got any tips for fighting Fox?
- Palutena : Fox McCloud is the leader of the mercenary flight team Star Fox. His trademark is incredible speed.
- Pit: It's about time you showed up, Fox!
- Viridi: That was a terrible General Pepper, Pit.
- Palutena: You should be wary of his Blaster too.
- Pit: Everybody, stay alert!
- Palutena: Focus, Pit. You might think Fox's Blaster doesn't hurt all that much and ignore it, but you'll soon find out you've taken lots of damage.
- Pit: Sorry—I'm back. OK, I'll just reflect his shots with my Guardian Orbitars!
- Palutena: I figured you'd say that.
- Pit: Huh? Is that...not what I should do?
- Palutena: Like I said, he's quick on his feet, so there's no telling when he'll suddenly rush in and grab you. You've got to watch your back constantly when Fox is around.
- Pit: DO A BARREL ROLL!
amiibo[edit ]
Fox is the leader of the commando unit for hire known as Star Fox. He uses both the team's mother ship, the Great Fox, and his personal Arwing fighter to challenge the evil scientist Andross.
