HOME > National Metrology Institute of Japan
As the national metrology institute (NMI), we are focusing on the development and dissemination of measurement standards, promotion of measurement standards utilization, development of measurement technologies related to measurement standards, legal metrology work and training of experts. Our activity covers engineering, physical, material, and chemical measurement standards. It also covers development of measurement and analytical instrumentation. We also coordinate international activities on metrology standards as a national representative.
AIST constructed an original rotor rotation mechanism that enables both sealing and high-speed rotation. The mechanism was introduced in a novel centrifugal field-flow fractionation system. The system can classify particles of a wide size range from 10 nm to 40 µm.
Centrifugal field-flow fractionation system has enabled fine classification of materials in a wide size range
AIST devised an ultra-wide band conductivity measurement technique up to over 100 GHz for metal materials used in high-frequency planar circuits. It developed an algorithm based on electromagnetic field analysis to determine the conductivity from the resonant sharpness of the higher-order mode excitations.
