Solar cell 03/12/2021

Development of Technology to Spread High-efficiency Multijunction Solar Cells
– Enables aluminum-containing materials to be utilized in solar cells, which was a challenge for low-cost growth methods –

The hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method is expected to be a low-cost growth method for III-V compound solar cells because of its high-speed growth using inexpensive raw materials. AIST and Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation have developed a reactor that enable us to form high-quality layers of aluminum containing materials in HVPE.

Symbiotic bacteria 01/06/2021

Symbiotic Bacteria Play Different Roles in Host Insect Larvae and Adults
– Elucidation of the relationship between insect metamorphosis, lifestyle change, and microbial symbiont –

AIST determined the genome and analyzed the biological functions of the symbiotic bacterium found in leaf beetles. This study revealed for the first time that one species of symbiotic bacteria can perform different functions in larvae and adults of the same host insect.

3D circuits 03/11/2021

Development of Technology for Easy 3D Shaping of Electronic Circuits
– Forming component-mounted circuits into three dimensions without damage –

AIST has developed a thermo-projection shaping method that enables easy high-speed 3D shaping without damage to electronic circuits fabricated on a flat resin sheet. The heat applied to the sheet during shaping is partially blocked to create non-deforming areas, thus avoiding damage to the circuits.

Large deformation 03/25/2021

Accelerating Development of Large Deformation Materials Needed for Soft Actuators
– Use of machine learning to identify molecular structures that exhibit target properties –

AIST has developed a method that accelerates development of materials that exhibit large deformation. Machine learning was used to analyze correlations between molecular structure of materials and simulation results of deformation. The method was applied to liquid crystal elastomers, which are candidates of soft actuator materials.

Low reflectivity 04/05/2021

Development of Optical Components with Both World Top-Level Wide-Angle Low Reflectivity and Anti-fogging Properties
– Contribution to increasing functionality of anti-reflective coatings for objects with complex shapes such as lenses, LCD panels and automotive instrument panels –

AIST has developed a technology that fabricates anti-reflective nanostructures with world top-level low-reflection characteristics over a wide incident angle range by injection molding. In addition, a newly developed self-forming column formation technology is used to form column-shaped structures to achieve anti-fogging effects.

Elevation tiles 03/09/2021

Release of High-Precision Elevation Tiles That Can Be Used for 3D Map Creation
– Start of "Seamless Elevation Tiles" web distribution service –

AIST released "Seamless Elevation Tiles" consisting of high-precision elevation data for Hyogo Prefecture etc. converted to PNG elevation tiles that are easy to use on the web. Use of the released PNG elevation tiles achieves high-speed operation by 3D websites and other Internet sites.

Particle classification 01/14/2021

High Resolution of Size Classification of Particles from 10 nm to 40 µm Was Achieved
– Establishment of the centrifugal field-flow fractionation system with centrifugal acceleration over 15000 G for the first time in the world –

AIST constructed an original rotor rotation mechanism that enables both sealing and high-speed rotation. The mechanism was introduced in a novel centrifugal field-flow fractionation system. The system can classify particles of a wide size range from 10 nm to 40 µm.
