Through the lense of sustainable timber trade which I have forcused as a research topic, I proposed a possible solution to overcome the challenge in forest low implementation cost.
In conclusion, when viewed through the lens of sustainable timber trade, a producer country's forest laws, the cost of strengthening forest law can be reframed. It is not a burden, but an opportunity for value creation—an investment in the future.
To achieve this, it is crucial that a producer country's forest laws consider the regulations of consumer countries, reflect its own national sustainability vision, and link that vision to the international context. By doing so, producer countries can transition from being rule-takers to becoming standard-setters.
Until recently, this proposal might have sounded like a pipe dream. However, at this year's UNFCCC COP, there is a strong push to advance the bioeconomy. I believe this global trend provides a powerful tailwind for the solution I have outlined today.
The Model Forest Act Initiative (MoFAI) is a groundbreaking initiative to transform national forest laws to address 21st century challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and bioeconomy. It supports the development of the General Part of the Model Forest Act and accompanying explanatory guide as knowledge resources for law and policymakers in designing and enhancing national forest legal frameworks for the modern context and provides a systematic way to deliver expertise, efficiency, and scale required to match the severity of
the global forest crisis.
