Year 1998

Series of 1998

Oh? Are you new here? Welcome to the New World!

98balls.png

This canon depicts works of a world changed by the collapse of the Veil in the year 1998, which gives the canon its name. In short, it’s alternate history fiction.

The "Veil" is a policy of concealing the abnormal and the paranormal from the general public, which has been a decision making process of the Foundation, the Global Occult Coalition, and many nations. The Foundation amnesticized people involved with SCP objects and murdered reality benders in order to maintain a tranquil human society under this fundamental policy.

However, with the lifting of the veil, this ordinary/extraordinary world has become a thing of the past. Paratechnology originating from the abnormal and the unusual tremendously improved the lives of many, although many of the things that cause us harm gained an abnormal/unusual edge as well.

To depict a humanity that "moves forward" from many points of view, many authors have written multiple stories using many formats, created terminology unique to the canon, and have crosslinked articles from outside the canon as well as within the canon together.
(However, while crosslinking can increase the comprehension and immersion of an article, it’s not always necessary.)

In addition, at the time of writing this guide, there are over 70 articles on this canon, which is undeniably a high hurdle for new readers. As a conclusion for this guide, to help those who’ve opened this up, is a selection of works that I think will help you understand the world of this canon. Particularly important articles are marked with a〈くろまる〉. It’s a lot, but I promise it’s fun!

SCP-1710-JP - CHOPIN GODZILLA くろまる
Where it all started. A divine entity with the face of Chopin is summoned by a cult to tear up the veil at the ground that was once Chopin’s homeland, Polska. Reality (Godzilla) vs. Fiction (Veil).
Early Summer, 1998 くろまる
Prometheus Neurons’ strangely goes bankrupt amid the shadows of officers and Diet members who slip in and out of view. While being chased, a journalist meets a unique group that reveres the great Chopin at his birth place. Without realizing, he steps into the veil; into the battlefield.

Manhattan Dimension Collapses; GOC’s Intervention Imminent?
The collapse of the Veil structure meant the transition to world order with four major powers: The Foundation, the Coalition, Prometheus, and the United States. To put cracks into that seemingly solid base, the Foundation’s unwanted child is put into motion. Now, the warped reality of a Veil-less world comes to light.
SCP-2911-JP - The Longest Day of the United States of America くろまる
Three silver wings sink Manhattan into the underworld. The fighting forces of the Foundation, the Coalition, and the Horizon Initiative rush into the demon-dominated city. They aim for the World Trade Center. Will 9/11 become the second turning point?

SCP-2041-JP - Foundation Contagion Ward Q5! Pale Terminal Patients and the Hopeless Hospital くろまる
When people recognize the "anomaly", they change into the anomaly. Site-81Q5 is a Foundation Center for the Research and Treatment of Anomalous Diseases that "contains" those affected by it.

The "F", October Edition くろまる
Under the chaos of the collapse of the Veil structure, the Foundation pushes forwards according to its own three principles. Anomalous diseases increase. "Cack Ash" falls to the ground and causes harm. The Summer Bird Thought League radicalizes, expanding throughout the whole world. The Veil is lifted once again on the African and South American continents.

Tokyo Incidents くろまる
The pre-war scientist and essayist Terada Torahiko is said to have warned us: "As civilization advances, the damage caused by natural disasters also increases. And calamities always come to us when we just forget about them". This reality collapse disaster is the beginning of a long nightmare, and the starting point of Japan’s rebirth.

Rigaiken Considers Options; Selling Off Considered?
The waves of a transforming society have naturally reached Japan. Business-afiliated associations either make great advancements or stagnate. The Japanese government remains rooted to the old ways. Like a phoenix, Prometheus Concern revives, closing in on the gap.

Nagano City AFC Murder Case: the accused Ren Isanagi is Sentenced to Death by the Nagano District Court
The Veil’s disappearance sees the entry into society and formation of new anomaly holders, both material and spiritual. These people are persecuted not only for their hatred towards humanity, but also because of their religious beliefs and ideologies.

Canon Guide

About this Canon

The Canon "1998" is a series of works depicting a world transformed by the collapse of the Veil in the year 1998, which gives it its name.

In the early summer of 1998, a suspicious cult invoked a repulsive God in Poland. This imperfect but powerful divine entity tramples over many towns, moving towards the Holy Land in order to become whole again. The SCP Foundation, the Global Occult Coalition and the Polish government worked together in order to defeat the entity, and finally succeeded after a fierce battle. However, the large-scale battle caught the attention of the public, and the entity, at the time of its suppression, caused a thaumaturgical backlash that blew apart the southern part of Poland, exposing the existence of the entity and the Foundation; the "Veil", the border that separates the "normal" from the "abnormal", was lost.

Now, this doesn’t make it a "broken masquerade". Yes, the Veil was broken. However, the flow of time took an even weirder turn. The survival of Prometheus, the Insurgency’s anomalous terrorism, and many other events piled up, making the world be engulfed in a whirlpool of change. And as a result...

Welcome to "1998", the stage for an hymn to humanity interwoven in chaos. Here’s your seat. Enjoy some coke and popcorn!

Canon Features

Currently, there are dozens of articles belong to the Canon, each with its own tendencies. That being said, there are some common features.

  • The Veil has been lifted

As mentioned above, the Veil was shattered by the events of 1998. Those put behind the walls of the "abnormal" are now gradually entering society.

  • The Guardian still stands

The world once known as "normalcy" doesn’t exist anymore. So where are the Foundation and the GOC? They’re still here. So that humanity can live in the light, they still reign as guardians of the "supernatural". It’s clear that their position has softened compared to before. However, they still stand at the forefront of humanity in order to protect it.

  • Technology has greatly developed

With Poland’s Emergency Demands, followed by the Second Paratech Bubble, Prometheus has once again become the World’s Torchbearer. The flying sparks ignite paranormal companies all over the world, and paranormal technologies explode and propagate. The fire continues to burn, and the world enters a new stage. The future we once dreamt of is now right in front of our eyes.

  • Anomalies evolve

Since the fall of the Veil, countless anomalies have appeared in the world. Whether they decided to show up now or if there is something else at work, no one knows. However, the wave has steadily spread out, becoming gigantic. In time, humanity came to face new threats: Anomalous diseases, paranormal disaster, et cetera, et cetera...

  • Barriers will rise again and again

The collapse of the Veil, the overflowing anomalies, the crawling Groups of Interest. All these components intertwive, giving birth to mayhem in the world. Poland, Manhattan, Tokyo, Colombia, Spain... Common sense falls into hell, and cities fall and shatter into pieces. Nothing can be done to help the innocent... but is that true?

  • And yet, we won’t give up

Mankind in this world will not yield. No matter how tall the barrier in front of us is, we will climb it and reach the morning sun behind it. With the "technology" of paratech and the radiance of our "hearts", we will fight against all kinds of hardship. The day when we will stop walking forward... That day will probably never come. Onwards, mankind.

Tone and Themes

The overall tone of "1998" is "Hope for the future". Although some scenes are full of overwhelming despair and sadness, the canon is ultimately about overcoming them, with a theme of moving towards a better tomorrow.

However, due to the size of the canon, there are many other themes of varying sizes. Let me give some examples:

The possible themes are endless. If your wild ideas have grown out of control, then please, bring them to us.

Ah! But before you do that, you might want to thoroughly read the hub. The writing guide and the setting compilation might be of help.

Series in Canon

Manhattan Crisis ― Series is set in Manhattan, where all kinds of paranormal phenomena rampage through due to a reality collapse terrorist attack.

External Series

Broken Masquerade ― This canon originally started as a Broken Masquerade "What if" before it separated and became independent. For this reason, both canons are strongly compatible, and there is a strong sharing of settings to differentiate the 1998 canon.

Third Law ― There are numerous connections in the paratech aspect. Note that unlike there, Prometheus Labs is still active here.

linkAge ― With the collapse of the Veil and the development of paratech, the Church of Maxwellism greatly expanded its power. It seems cyberbrain devices have already reached the general population.

Shinano Chuo Post ― This canon often uses this format, and this canon’s hub also describes the Shinano Chuo Post in its setting.

White Family Tree Picture Book ― The offshoot series "White Branch Trilogy" is set in the world of the 1998 Canon.

Foundation Designation - Widespread Anomaly Containment Cases ― The offshoot series "Case:N - Man-Made Disaster Battle" is set in the world of the 1998 Canon.

What Must Be Protected

  • Always tag the articles you write for the canon with ‘1998’. The ‘broken-masquerade’ tag is to not be attached.
  • If you have written an article and it has not fallen into deletion within 30 minutes, feel free to add it to the hub’s ‘Articles’ section.

Authors are able to freely add, delete, and move their articles in the list. If it has not been added within 2 days of its publication, it’ll be added by a committee member as written below.

Recommendations

  • Contradictions with the established setting should be reduced as much as possible. You might want to reference "background information" below. If you are unsure, you can consult an expert through Wikidot PMs, or through the Discord channel/server mentioned below.
  • It’s recommended to tie this hub as a parent page. It isn’t necessary to do so, but readers will appreciate the linking.

Advice from Experts

Tark_IOL Tark_IOL ’s Advice:
Hello, I’m Tark_IOL.
As the work I write for the "1998" Canon are GoI formats and Tales in the shape of newspapers and journals, I would like to be presumptuous when it comes down to advice on these matters.

  • Consider if your idea is interesting enough for the newspapers/journal format

The 98-Canon’s Newspaper/Journal format is one that is not difficult to apply to your idea as long as you can make your headcanon fit in.
However, it’s important to remember that newspapers are fundamentally a specialized medium through which a general "fact" is efficiently conveyed through an outsider perspective.
Taking this into account, a newspaper format is not the best choice if you want to write an emotionally charged article. If you want to write a dramatic scene or convey a strong emotion in an event, a Tale that fills up the after and before the event, and allows the characters to do the talking would be a better way to sublimate your idea and draw the reader in.

  • Try to avoid directly expressing your political stance and ideology

98-Canon plays with the idea of compiling alternate history. It’s a society in which many events occur that mirror reality, while also diverging from it.
It’s important to note that you should keep your opinions and ideas (Including those that involve the global world as well as Japanese society) as direct expressions in your article. Not only do they not contribute to the interest of the article, they also become noise for the canon setting.
As long as you create, you cannot escape your opinions and ideas, but you can always sublimate, dilute and roll up your starting point, basis and underlying principles to make your article interesting as literary work.
((注記)The advice presented here is the "personal" interpretation of hub author hey_kounoike, and seafield13, who both he and I respect, taken from Fusōki, another Canon-JP that deals with alternate history.)

  • Incorporate crosslinks and material from other articles

Of course, this piece of advice assumes you’ve read the excellent guides written by our predecessors, 『Crosslinks Guide』 and 『Regarding Crosslinks』, but in this Canon it’s believed and encouraged to include all sort of material from other articles. This not only includes material from the Canon, but also from outside of it.
As it’s usually the case in the Canon’s GoI formats, what is usually depicted in the 98-Canon is not a Foundation that is secretive, insular, and distant from the anomalous society, but rather a society in which the anomalous are exposed and connected.
As such, inserting crosslinks of people, gadgets and backgrounds that appear in your article is an effective method of placing your article within the 98-Canon society, and acquiring a wider background. Also, crosslinks from outside the canon is an act that contributes to the expansion of its world view.
Personally, the ads section of the newspaper format is the best place for it. There’s no better place to add material than this.

O-92_Mallet O-92_Mallet ’s Advice:

  • There’s always reasons for world transitions

In a world without Veil, the barrier between normal and abnormal is rather low, and entities that greatly differ from anything humankind has seen before spread throughout the world. in the middle of the process of major transformation of the "Society of humans, by humans, for humans" as we’ve known it, not only the paranormal events that represent the 1998 Canon, but also many small conflicts with new friends never before seen come into sight.

You have two major options... Onew is to focus on the people living in the near future, and create a story involving their personal contact with the anomalous. The other is to look at the grander social system that people have built and rationalize the feelings they have in the middle of this anomalous society.

Remember the Tones and Themes section of the 1998 Canon. Even if the scene is set in a streamlined, silver, idealized near future, if you cut off a specific scene, you’ll often find a scene of sadness and gloom on its reverse. However, regardless of if the tone of the trend is positive or negative, the scene will always have "a reason for being".

Why are our furry friends oppressed? What ideology did the terrorist group want to protect? What defines what direction is humankind moving towards? You have the privilege of freely discovering it and expressing it.

  • "Core Articles" aim at including a wide range of developments

The season system in the 1998 hub introduces a list of works classified into "Core Articles" that directly depict major events, and smaller stories that occur around this event. Core articles literally define the season, and their existence impacts the world to such a degree that they define the direction in which human society moves towards.

If you wish to challenge yourself into writing a core article, you must consider that it has to include one of the following elements:

  • Many characters are introduced. They are influenced by the world situation in which they find themselves to some degree, and establish their own opinions and intentions through said influence. And then the interactions between these characters become the seed for new stories.
  • Focus on unique technological systems. Consider then how mankind (Not only the Foundation) developed this technology, and how it helped the world move forward. Or consider the accidents and side effects that these technologies cause, or the existence of collusive interests.
  • If you plan on adding a core article as the season’s top batter, display possible sections that express people’s feelings and the world trends, and leave some characterization open such that following authors have an easier time writing for it. Inversely, if you’re adding a core article as an overall summary of a season, look at articles already submitted by others, read several of them considering a certain theme, and put together an event storyline that establishes events for all of them.

Incidentally, the articles established as core articles for the canon are generally really long. However, take into account that this doesn’t mean a core article needs to be extremely long. What matters are the events in it, and how the world changes because of them.

  • The advancement of the anomalous society and the irrationality of the SCP world must be made compatible

Don’t forget that the works of the 1998 Canon are part of the SCP Foundation. Yes, the SCP Foundation is a collection of creepy and illogical works that handle the "anomalous". If your work has unique features that other science fantasy writing sites cannot substitute, your work will be more fascinating to the many readers of the SCP Foundation (Who often read articles from more than one Canon).

In this canon, "anomalous" can be accessed by anyone, and the study of them has developed greatly. However, their entire nature has not yet been unveiled. That anomalies are not hidden anymore does not mean that the genre of irrational storytelling has been restricted. There’s countless ways to approach them still. We hope that your work is not just a n article for the 1998 Canon, but also an excellent addition to the SCP Foundation.

How do I add a Season?

You’ll notice in the previous list of articles a collection of articles calle "Year XXXX: Title". This is a "season". A season is a collection of articles revolving around an event that changed the world meaningfully. This could be considered the "Main Story" of the canon.

There’s two ways of creating a new season:

1. If there is a central article
Prepare at least 3 articles belonging to the season. must include at least 1 "Core Article" that directly depicts an event that defines the season.

2. If there is no central article
Prepare at least 5 articles belonging to the season. A core article is not needed, but it’s preferable that there is a connection vision between all articles of the season.

If you meet any of these requirements, you can bring your case to the "1998 management assembly/1998年 運営会議場" explained in the following tab. A voting amongst experts will be held, and if no problems arise, permission will be given to the season applicant to edit the hub.

Background Information

Overview

For those who wish to know more, here is a summary of the Canon’s world setting. If you read this, you’ll generally understand every other article.
Due to its nature, it contains some spoilers. View with caution.

For a more detailed explanation, we recommend you reference the extended setting document collection on an external site.

Organizations

Groups of Interest are the stars of this Canon. They are able to portray how they interact with society, not only cause incidents.

Many organizations are not that different from the Main Canon, except that they become more active following the collapse of the Veil. However, with the change of the social landscape, some GoIs have chosen a completely different path.

The Foundation

World’s largest paranormal organization. Under the words Secure, Contain and Protect, it has acted as the protector of humankind since before the collapse of the Veil. Following the 1998 event, the Foundation decided to step out from the shadows, and set out to guide public opinion and reduce shock. Thus the Foundation maintained its power, and has continued to survive for the preservation of humankind.

Its motto hasn’t changed, but its policies are more lax compared to before the collapse of the Veil. Since the Hudson River agreement, some of the beings known as humanoid entities have been freed from containment. They help the world harmonize with the anomalous, such as regulating the expanding paratech industry and aiding nations with the anomalous. Normalcy no longer exists, but they still make decisions and act accordingly.

Their attitude towards anomalies that threaten humankind has not changed. Cataloguing and containing anomalous entities and preventing K-Class End-of-the-World Scenarios. The work never stops.

Since the 2030s, they've been actively working towards the treatment of recurrent anomalous diseases that have been increasing all over the world, designated "Foundation Designated Incurable Diseases". However, its main site, Site-81Q5 has been greatly compromised.

  • Site-81Q5

In a world where anomalous diseases are on the rise, the Foundation has established special health care sites as a countermeasure. Connected to hospitals all over the country, it’s built to transport patients with high-risk disease, including anomalous diseases classified as Foundation designated incurable diseases.

  • Shinano Chuo Post

Foundation front company based in Nagano Prefecture. Has become the largest media company in Japan and the world, and has made significant developments such as an online edition app and a TV company subsidiary.

Global Occult Coalition (GOC)

One of the two biggest normalcy preservation organizations, the other being the Foundation. Its parent organization is the United Nations. As its name indicates, it’s a coalition of united paranormal organizations from all over the globe, and like the Foundation, it has been protecting humankind since before 1998. They have also maintained their power, and act as the police force of the anomalous world.

They used to be at odds with the Foundation due to their stance of destroying and purging anomalous entities, but since the collapse of the Veil they’ve taken on a policy of reconciliation, and have a positive mutual exchange stance. However, long-standing grudges don’t disappear easily, and political and military opposition still exists.

  • World Parahealth Organization (WPhO)

WHO’s anomalous disease treatment division. Officially established in 2022.

Prometheus Laboratories

Giant corporate association centered around paratechnology. In the original history, it went bankrupt in 1998, but in this world it still thrives. With the divine event and the collapse of the Veil occurring right before its bankruptcy, the Foundation and the GOC adopted a strategy to keep Prometheus alive to prevent the dissipation of anomalous technology and the further destabilization in the social order that this would cause. As a result, Prometheus embarked in a post-treatment of the divine event backed by the Foundation, the GOC, and the Polish government, and participated in the general market as well, achieving a great restoration and rebirth thanks to this and the second paratech bubble that followed. Prometheus is once again a big player in the world.

Nisso Medical Equipment/Japan Organisms Improvement and Creation Laboratory

The impact of the collapse of the Veil and the second paratech bubble reached Japan, and the Japan Organisms Improvement and Creation Laboratory spread its wings globally. However, due to the accidental outbreak of the Beast Anomaly Virus in 2009, changed the minds of the Foundation, the Coalition and the Japanese government negatively, especially as they had acted without the authorization of the JAGPATO. The event led to the company being the target of aggressive control and massive amounts for compensation liability. The gradual weakening of the JOICL eventually led to its legal dissolution.

However, following the Tokyo Incidents, the company was restarted as part of a policy to revitalize domestic corporations. Thanks to its technical prowess, self-cleaning efforts and government support, the company returned as a large company with global top shares due to numerous medical devices: "Nisso Medical Equipment" had been born. It’s the core company of the "Nisso Group", and does not participate in the "Yakushi" syndicate of medical care during the same time period.

Yakushi

Massive medical care corporation federation named after the Healing Buddha. Many companies rose to combat anomalous diseases in the 2040s, and this is one of the most central coalitions. Their activities are not that different from normal companies, but their financial power and size have put them at odds with the Foundation at times, the two being in a state of tension for a long time.

  • Yakushiji Pharma

Yakushi‬’s core company and the top of the hierarchy.
There’s no Japanese person who hasn’t heard the group’s commercials. "No matter who you are, you’ll be alright! The Buddha teaches Dharma and heals with Yakushiji Pharma!"
All drugstores sell products from Yakushiji Pharma. The extent of products is wide, and includes anything from skincare products to energy drinks. Furthermore, it’s active as an R&D company too, and has developed its own memetic cold medicine "Antamin". its main fields of research are memetic infections and paraorthopedic illnesses.
In 1763, the head of the Yakushiji Clan, Yakushiji Sōbei became an independent medicine merchant, this day considered the anniversary of the company. The history of the Yakushiji family is even older, however, and according to one theory, they were in charge of medical care for the Shūshū-In.

Rigaiken Group

One of the largest multidisciplinary anomalous corporation groups in Japan. This group of independent companies with roots in the former Rigaiken Industrial Association have maintained side-by-side cooperation across multiple fields since the post-war period.
The group’s many companies made a name of themselves in several Japanese markets as the biggest domestic licensed group with commercial operations from the collapse of the Veil to the pre-market liberalization, but fell back due to Prometheus’ aggressive movements. Since then, the group has attempted to make a comeback in various ways, such as the formation and joining of company groups across several fields. Many of the roles of the company groups are as liaison to the government and the Foundation, making use of their deep connections to do so.

  • Foundation Corporation Rigaigaku Research Institute

Widely known as the Natural Sciences Symbiotic Anomalous Research Institute. Its roots are in a paranormal research group of the same name working for the Riken group during the Taishō period. Funding comes from joint investment by the Rigaiken and patents held by the same corporation. Functions as the base for organizing the pool of researchers and joint research efforts of the group of companies.

Hanakago School

A private school in the Tokyo Metropolis’ 9th Ward that contains within a large-scale garden system in its yard. The "garden", which proudfully covers 90% of the land’s area, acts similarly to a highly-advanced computer and has a demonics summoning mechanism that produces massive amounts of energy. This "garden" is expected to be used as a resource for many applications, such as in health care, as an energy production facility, or as testing grounds for artificial intelligence.

The school was established as part of a scheme between companies in many fields, hospitals, and government bodies, and the students are equally as unique and talented. The Hanakago school was founded to educate anomaly-possessing children following the abrupt societal change. The organization secures education for those not covered by the Foundation’s Pritchard University, many of them belonging to Groups of Interest.

Hanakago school is located in the Tokyo Metropolis’ 9th Ward, but Tokyo in the 1998 Canon has been destroyed by dimensional disasters. The existence of the Hanako school is confronted by the "Tokyo Incidents", but it’s actually possible for the two concepts to coexist.

Chopinian Cult

Poland-centered paranormal cult that worships legendary composer Frederic Chopin as a deity or savior. Note that while the cult appears to have Christian influences, perhaps due to Chopin being Christian, it's fundamentally different from it.

  • St. Chopin's Orthodox Church

Its Foundation designation is GoI-484A. The most "legitimate" faction, it’s the closest to the Chopinian Cult description, and the one the Foundation-PL pays attention to the most. The small cult was set up around 1960 by Anthony Bukowski in Żelazowa Wola, Poland.

  • Society of Soundmagi for the Revival of St. Chopin

Its Foundation designation is GoI-484E. An extremely radical group founded in 1982 by priest Wojciech Nowak, who was excommunicated from GoI-484A.
At one point, Nowak came into contact with a divine being from another dimension, who gave him its blessing, allowing for the cult’s rapid growth. Although he thought this God was St. Chopin Himself, in reality, it was an evil God mimicking Chopin. In exchange for corrupted rituals, this God grants its believers strong reality-altering and thaumaturgical abilities.
Although around 80% of its members, leader included, were killed when the divine being was summoned, and the remaining members were eradicated by normalcy preservation organizations during the clean-up efforts, their influence is still present.

Chaos Insurgency (CI)

An organization branched off from the Foundation that possesses an extensive crime network in the third world, and numerous paraweapons. In order to stop the New World Order, a group of four major powers— The United States, The Foundation, the Coalition, and Prometheus Laboratories— they carried out a terrorist attack later known as 9/11, in which they sunk Manhattan into the underworld. Because of this, the world at large knows them as a paranormal terrorist group.

Their true goal is to "create a world of humans by humans". They are concerned about the world in which anomalies are exposed and non-humans flood the streets, and want to bring back the human-centric "light" of the past. They will not hesitate in using any means to accomplish this.

Summer Bird Thought League

The Summer Bird Thought League of this world rejects anomalies. They vary greatly, from those who calmly reminisce about the good old days of "normalcy" to radical groups that attack the Foundation and other Groups of Interest that sell anomalous goods. They also heavily discriminate against the Polish (And in more extreme cases, against all Europeans). Ironically, many extremists are willing to use anomalies attacking others. Many wealthy people are among their ranks. Many celebrities are believed to help fund the group.

Alternative Colombia

Alternative Colombia is an unreal area located 1500m above Bogotá. Numerous entities (humans, demons, AFC) live here, creating an anomalous cultural community centered around paradrugs. They’ve been observed inviting people from other countries into their community, often using paradrugs to do so.

On October 2, 2006, the Colombian government declared its independence from nations and normalcy preservation organizations that interfered with them, use thaumaturgy to transfer the consciousness of all living beings of the country into a spiritual body, and transfer them into the area where the body was manifested. The Colombian government has been dismantled, and the area is believed to be under the control of paradrug syndicate "John Doe Cartel". Due to internal and external hazards, the area has been designated as an off-limits zone.

Terminology

Vocabulary is the first step in worldbuilding. Understandably, this canon has a large number of terms. The most important ones have been placed here.

  • Akiva

Physical, quantifiable indicator of spiritual/faith-based energy. Its SI unit is Ak. Used to measure the strength of divine beings, as the more faith is put in a subject, the higher the Akiva reading will be.

  • Demonics

General term for technologies that use demons for integrated circuits with embedded summoning devices. In the 60s and 70s they were widely used for the production of general goods as non-anomalous technology, but when anomalous effects began occurring frequently without explanation at the end of the 70s, demonic manufactured goods and technologies were removed from the private sector in 1985, with a few exceptions. However, shortly after the collapse of the Veil in this canon, a private company rediscovered the technology in 2001, and found safe, cheap alternatives, such as extracting energy from plantlife.

  • Demonic Entity

The term "demon" is used to refer to a wide variety of anomalous entities coming from many worlds in the multiverse (See the Third Law Hub), and although many categories exist, they share the trait that they are bound by contracts when summoned. In this canon, a large amount of demonic entities manifested during the 2001 Manhattan dimensional collapse terrorist attack, with some helping in the Manhattan reconstruction efforts, and others causing further incidents.

  • Anomaly Holder

Broad category for those who have anomalous traits. Known as AC (Anomalous carriers). The terms "Parahuman" and "Anahuman" are also used as synonyms. They came to be known by the general public in 1998, and their rights were recognized in 2001 with the signing of the Hudson River agreement.

  • Anomaly Holder Protection Law

Law passed in Japan amidst global humanoid entities’ rights guarantee protests. Initially intended to protect parahumans whose traits were acquired later in life. In 2025, it was revised to accommodate for the changing times and acceptance of other anomalous groups, as well as to include congenital parahumans and folkloric entities.

  • Veil

Name given to the policy of hiding or otherwise disguising the abnormal, supernatural and occult from mankind, maintained by world governments and normalcy preserving organizations. In this world, it ceased to exist on the 13th of July, 1998.

  • Nutria Española

General term for Spanish people (Those living in the Iberian Peninsula) who mutated into an otter-type AFC race as a result of a large-scale disturbance in the food chain during a Spanish divine entity emergency event. They’ve retained their intelligence, life span, and vocal cords, and their hands (forelimbs) have a higher degree of mobility compared to normal otters. Those who did not experience the transformation due to, for example, living outside the peninsula, and remained human are known as Humano Español.

  • Alternative Colombia Incident

Incident occurring on October 2, 2006. General term for event in which Colombian government declared its independence from nations and normalcy preservation organizations and the transfer of all living species to an unreal area over Bogotá. Effectively moved Colombia into a state of isolation. For more information, see Season 2006: The Catcher in the Hemp.

  • Cack Ash

"Ashes" left behind by organisms that have disappeared due to Akiva radiation. Visibility is possible but physical interference is not. Discovered by researcher Cack in 1998. Hume levels are unstable in areas with high concentrations of Cack Ash. Contact and aspiration can cause short-term issues in the body’s internal EVE, which can prove fatal, especially for mages due to uncontrollable backlashes. Early VERITAS and Kant counters suffer measurement errors due to their interference.

  • Thaumaturgy

Scientific study of what’s known as "magic". Unified Thaumatology is the most widely accepted thaumaturgy theoretical system. For more information, see Professor ████████████’s lecture on Applied Thaumatology.

  • Odd-Toed disease

Infection caused by the TX-85957, a Beast Anomaly Virus developed by the Japan Organisms Improvement and Creation Laboratory. Animal parts develop on the infected’s body, leading to death in some cases. In 2009, a leak from a JOICL facility in Kanagawa Prefecture led to an epidemic in Japan.

  • Foundation Designated Incurable Diseases

Framework developed in the late 2020s due to concerns on the impact of anomalous diseases on society. Defined as diseases, including non-anomalous ones that meet the following criteria:
- Based on principles that cannot be explained with modern science
- Expected to be able to be treated
- Have anomalies that affect others in a significant manner (Including its infectiousness)
- Are believed to be necessary for the Foundation to contain

A majority vote by the Foundation Health Care Division’s Special Committee can define a disease as a Foundation Designate Incurable Disease.

  • Site-81Q5 Reality Collapse Event

Event occurred on December 24, 2041, in the Foundation Japanese Branch Site-81Q5. Originally established to treat Foundation Designated Incurable Diseases, the facility became a danger zone following the loss of its euclidean and vector space, and the loss of its concrete meaning. For more information, see Season 2041: Morning Peeking Through the Hospital Window.

  • Dimensional Road

Technology that allows for high-speed travel through many access points scattered within the same dimension. Developed in the 2010s and, like the earlier Leap Road, succeeded in replacing the (already existing) disaster-proof high-speed transport system due to its cost, but was removed from Japan’s public projects due to the high number of deaths it caused during the Tokyo reality collapse incident of 2017.

  • Spanish Divine Entity Emergence Event

General term for the divine arrival event that occurred in north-eastern Spain from October 13 to November 29 of 2015, and the subsequent thaumaturgical disaster that affected the Iberian Peninsula. More than 40 million people were affected by phenotypic mutations during this event. Known to the private sector as the "Spanish Otter Incident" or the "Guindilla Event", the Foundation uses the internal code "Otter Event". For more information, see Season 2015: PLVS VLTRA

  • Spanish Constitution of 2016

New Spanish constitution enacted after the Spanish divine entity emergence event. The text specified the guarantee of rights for parahumans and other groups that kept their Spanish nationality, and was one of the better developed at the time. The reason for the enactment was because of the majority of the population that was now an Anomaly Feature Carrier (AFC) due to the Spanish divine entity emergence event.

  • Generation █

The generational division for children born after the 1998 divine entity emergence event is known as the "First Generation". Since the "Second generation", the children of the "First generation", the average body hume level has increased by about 1,0 Humes, and they've acquired limited reality bending abilities.

  • New Capital Urban Center

Central city built on the ex-Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. It has taken over Tokyo’s political and economical functions, and has adapted many paratechnologies, becoming a progressive city.

  • Leap Road

Technology that allows for high-speed travel using a relay system of portals located at both the departure place and destination. The Japan Linear Chūō Shinkansen, which opened in 2006, was the world’s first railway system that used it. Its high cost of construction compared with later dimensional roads stagnated new builds, but the lack of deaths compared to the dimensional roads that caused massive amounts during the Tokyo reality collapse incident in 2017 put it on the center of attention.

  • Tokyo Reality Collapse Widespread Disaster

Anomalous disaster that occurred in the Southern Kanto region, centered around Tokyo, on December 17, 2017. A reality collapse caused by anomalies destroyed urban areas and led to the deaths of tens of thousands. As Tokyo was destroyed by the disaster, they decided to move the capital. Known to the general public as the "Tokyo Incidents/Tokyo incidents Disaster". For more information, see Season 2017: Tokyo Incidents.

  • Animal Feature Carrier

General term for people with body animal features (Specific beast races, intelligent animals, therianthropes, human-beast hybrids, Odd-Toed Disease patients). Known as AFC or Animalies (Coined from the combination of "Animal" and "Anomaly"). Anomalous holder group that took the longest to be granted rights, and still suffer from discrimination and prejudice as of 2038.

  • Nagano City AFC Murder Case

The murder case took place in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, on August 1, 2037. The event resulted in 26 deaths and 38 injuries. The name was given because most of the victims were AFC. Public reaction was cold as AFC reception was still advancing, and conventional humans were also killed during it. For more information, see Season 2037: A Howl Through the Dawn.

  • Bicontinental Normality Recurrence Event

On September 13, 2019, a CK-class reality reconstruction scenario took place. As a result, for the African and South American continents, the Poland Divine Entity Emergence Event never took place. The inhabitants of both continents were once again forced to become ignorant of the anomalous, while anti-anomaly radicals such as the Summer Bird Thought League declared the area a holy land, and accelerated a population influx.

  • Cognitive Reality Theory

Theory in which reality is cognitively defined by the shared view of humanity, and that consensus reality is what the majority of the people consider real. Under this theory, it’s believed that anomalies becoming public knowledge following the collapse of the Veil is why the number of anomalies has increased.

  • Hudson River Agreement

Agreement between the Foundation and the Global Occult Coalition that occurring during a special meeting on paranormal issues at the United Nations Headquarters following the conclussion of the Manhattan dimensional collapse terrorist attack. Article 125, which covers all 125 articles of the post-handling of the event, and in particular protects the rights of humanoid/threat entities as long as they do not damage normalcy nor reality is a milestone on parahuman rights issues.

  • Paratechnologyー

General term for non-anomalous technologies (Known as over-technology) beyond current state-of-the-art technology (Beyond the Veil) as well as that derived from supernatural principles we’ve yet to understand. As the Veil was lifted in this canon, the further we move from 1998, the stronger the latter meaning is implied. Often abbreviated as Paratech.

  • Paradrug

General term for illegal/electronic drugs manufactured through anomalous means. They range from those created with anomalous organisms, anomalous plants, demonic entities, and those which are electronic data that directly affects the cranial nerves. Important imported goods of Alternative Colombia, and part of the paranormal culture of the area.

  • Unknown Entity

Also known as UE. Provisional term for unspecified and unclassified entities. If an entity is contained and studied and details are discovered, it receives a different designation, so the entities with this code’s details remain unknown due to disappearance or destruction. Unified code of the Foundation and the Global Occult Coalition.

  • Poland Divine Entity Emergence Event

Divine entity emergence event that occurred in Southern Poland from the afternoon of July 12 until the morning of July 13, 1998. As a result of this event, the world’s Veil collapsed. In the private sector, it’s known as the "0712 Event", "7/12" and so forth, while the Foundation uses the internal code "Event Persephone". For more information, see Season 2037: 1998: A Night of Waltz.

  • Manhattan Dimensional Collapse Terrorist Attack Event

Started on September 11, and ended on September 15, 2001. Large-scale paranormal terrorist attack affecting Manhattan, the United States, in which the Chaos Insurgency temporarily dragged the city into an alternate dimension inhabited by demonic entities. In the private sector, it’s known as the "Manhattan Crisis", "9/11 Terrorist Attack", and so forth, while the Foundation uses the internal code "Manhattan Chaos". For more information, see Season 2001: The Longest Day of the United States of America.

  • Gulf of Mexico Organization

Common name for the New World Order, a group of four major powers: The United States, The Foundation, the Coalition, and Prometheus Laboratories. Known as such due to it being built using the Southern United States Extranormal Organization Cooperation Treaty (SUSEOCT) as basis. From the Foundation’s perspective, it operated as a model case for the prevention of conflicts within North America, where most of the assets of the Foundation and the Coalition are located, as well as by phasing out the Veil Protocol. However, 9/11 created cracks within the group, and it slowly weakened.
