- —Raphael the Raven, Tetris Attack
Raphael the Raven (also known by the shortened name Raphael Raven) is the leader of the Ravens and first appears as the boss of the fifth world in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island . Initially, he is an ordinary Raven, but is enlarged by Kamek to fight the Yoshis. In Tetris Attack and Paper Mario , he appears as an ally.
History[edit ]
Yoshi's Island series[edit ]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit ]
- “You can, ah, will, aaah, never enter the Koopa Kingdom! I banish you to forever twinkle in the heavens. BEGONE!!”
- —Kamek , Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
Raphael the Raven is the boss of World 5 in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake. When Blue Yoshi arrives, Kamek taunts him. After becoming larger, Raphael knocks Blue Yoshi and Baby Mario off to a small moon (any eggs held are left behind at the castle), where Raphael follows them to. Raphael fights by chasing and ramming into Blue Yoshi around the moon to send Baby Mario flying. Raphael goes to the opposite side of the moon, but can be damaged from Blue Yoshi Ground Pounding a Stump on the opposite side. Raphael attacks by jumping into the air and slamming the ground, creating shockwaves that circle the moon. Raphael becomes increasingly redder, angrier, and faster with each hit. Raphael is defeated after three hits, then it turns into a constellation in the sky.
Raphael the Raven and Naval Piranha are the only world bosses that use the extended variation of the boss theme, the former which was used in all other bosses in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.
Raphael's sprite has a star on his belly. However, since the star is always the same palette as his skin, it is never seen in-game.[1]
Yoshi's Island DS[edit ]
Raphael the Raven is not a boss in Yoshi's Island DS , but he does cameo in the intro with the other bosses from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.[2]
Yoshi's New Island[edit ]
A large Raven, sharing a similar size to Raphael the Raven and perhaps inspired by him,[3] appears in Yoshi's New Island , though as a standard enemy. It behaves a lot like the other Ravens, but despite being much larger, it can be defeated in the same way. The large Raven is found in Eggstraordinary Terrain in the area above the beanstalk.
The Kamek mini-boss battle in World 2 is similar to Raphael's because Yoshi has to pound stumps in order to damage Kamek.
Tetris Attack[edit ]
Raphael The Raven returns in Tetris Attack , allied with the Shy-Guys. He is in the eighth level and the last character to be saved from Bowser's and Kamek's brainwashing. Raphael The Raven is playable in certain modes, where he replaces the moon fairy Seren from Panel de Pon .
Paper Mario[edit ]
Raphael the Raven reappears in Paper Mario . In this game, Raphael is the leader of a tribe of Ravens that live in peace with the Yoshis of Lavalava Island and is considered by them to be the "master" of the island. He lives in a nest in a tree in Jade Jungle and has become a legend to the Yoshis (as no one except the Village Leader can remember actually seeing him). He has the ability to communicate with both Mario and his Ravens and is depicted with a military disposition, commonly ending sentences with "over." Raphael helps Mario by ordering his Ravens to build a pulley contraption to take Mario and his allies to Mt. Lavalava, site of the fifth Star Spirit and the Lava Piranha. He also gives Mario the Ultra Stone, an item that allows Mario's party members to become even more powerful.
Later in the game, he writes a letter to Sushie which the player can read at the Toad Town Post Office. In the letter, he asks whether he can provide help for Sushie, such as helping her climb the tree or cooking things she wants to eat. This letter will only be available during Chapter 8 if Mario wishes to go back to Toad Town from Bowser's Castle.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit ]
Raphael the Raven makes a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy, which makes a suggestion that it is organically larger.[4] A Sticker of Raphael appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl , which has a discrepancy of stating its artwork origin from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island while actually using the retouched Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 artwork, and the moon is in the background of the Yoshi's Island stage. Raphael appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Spirit that makes the fighter unaffected by any tripping effect like the earthquake hazard and the Banana peels.

- Player's Guide description:
- English:
High in the night sky, a small brown globe spins. Guarding it like a hawk is ravenous Raphael, a rotund raptor armed with flame-throwing feet. At this altitude, it's easy to get lightheaded and feel your head spinning, especially with Raphael chasing you all over the planet! If you succeed in beating this bird, though, you just might put a new constellation over Yoshi's Island.[5]

Notes[edit ]
- Digga-Leg from Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a similar battle style to Raphael in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Both are fought on 2D planets in space and are defeated by attacking from the opposite side of the planet they're standing on.
