Steward requests/Global permissions

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
This page hosts requests for global permissions. To make a request, read the relevant policy (global rollback , global sysop , global rename , ...) and make a request below. Explain why membership is needed for that group, and detail prior experience or qualifications.

This is not a vote and any active Wikimedia editor may participate in the discussion.

Global rollback and global interface editor requests require no fewer than 5 days of discussion while abuse filter helper and maintainer requests require no fewer than 7 days. Global renamer and global sysop requests require no fewer than 2 weeks of discussion. For requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, they may be closed by a steward without further discussion (after a reasonable amount of input).

Requests for global rollback permissions

[edit ]
Please be sure to follow the instructions below:
Your request might be rejected if you don't follow the instructions, and not doing so would reflect poorly on your suitability.
Please also review the Global rollback policy.
Please note that Global rollbackers discussions are not votes. Comments must present specific points in favor of or against a user's approval.
Instructions for making a request

Before requesting, make sure that: You have sufficient activity to meet the requirements to be allocated the global rollback flag

To make a request
Copy the template below to the bottom of this section and explain of why you need the access and why you're suitable.
=== Global rollback for {{subst:u|{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}}} ===
{{sr-request
 |status = <!-- don't change this line -->

 |user name = {{subst:REVISIONUSER}} <!-- don't change this line unless you're nominating another user -->
}}
::''Not ending before {{subst:#time:j F Y H:i|+5 days}} UTC''

The request will be approved if consensus to do so exists after a period of consideration of no less than 5 days (with rare exceptions , no matter how obvious the result may seem). This is not a vote, and all input is welcome. Stewards will determine whether consensus exists; when doing so it is likely that the weight given to the input of those involved in cross-wiki work will be most influential.

The request will be approved if consensus to do so exists after a period of consideration of no less than two weeks (no exceptions are allowed no matter how obvious the result may seem). While all input is welcome, there is a hard 80% support requirement for this role as per the global renamer policy.

Global rename for Aqurs1

[edit ]
Status: In progress
Not ending before 5 February 2025 07:23 UTC

Hi all, I am here requesting for global rename permissions. I would like to help and deal with Special:GlobalRenameQueue, and especially rename request on zhwiki (aka my home wiki). I've read and clearly understand the policy, FAQ and other local policies. Although I'm not a sysop on any wikimedia projects, but I believe it's not a big deal to grn, I will try to do my best with this role. Appreciate if y'all could give me a try.

Global IP block exempt for Pigsonthewing

[edit ]
Status: Already done

I have longstanding IP exemption on en.Wikipedia, because I regularly give demos or train people as part of GLAM outreach, at venues whose networks are blocked. I also work on trains, using public WI-Fi. However I have also experienced difficulty recently due to inability to edit Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and other projects in such circumstances. Please make me globally exempt. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:48, 25 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Already done by Xaosflux. Note that GIPBE only exempts you from global blocks - if you are affected by local hardblocks, you need to request a local IP block exemption. EPIC (talk) 10:54, 26 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

You don't seem to be using a globally blocked IP at the moment? (at least not what I can see from our technical data) Could you email us with more information? EPIC (talk) 10:51, 26 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@EPIC, I can edit using mobile internet. But the IP address of the router that I use regularly is blocked. It is expensive for me to always use mobile internet. মোঃ সাকিবুল হাসান (talk) 16:58, 26 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Global exemption to CAPTCHA for Iming

[edit ]
Status: In progress

I'm a file mover for Wikimedia Commons, and during a recent file move work I found that some wikis have captchas that prevent me from using a script to change the name of a file in the corresponding wiki to the name after the move. Thus, based on precedent, I'm requesting this right. Thank you. --Iming (talk) 16:36, 12 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Hey Iming, have you tried using User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL? That is fixing most captcha problems after a few days. Best regards, TenWhile6 00:10, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hi TenWhile6, thank you for your advice! Creating accounts in all wikimedia series wikis using this script does avoid some wiki related problems. However, let me clarify that there are still some wikis that still show captchas for non-autoconfirmed users, provided a local account exists. (Some wikis require a certain number of edits for autoconfirmed users, in addition to the registered time.) Obviously, I don't have the language skills to contribute to the wiki in question, thus making this very difficult. It's also unclear which wikis still have this problem, so I'd still like to request this right rather than requesting local confirm user right at each wiki to avoid future problems. Thank you. Iming (talk) 00:33, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@Iming: That's fair, but I think you should still do both – saves you more work than needed in the long run by using Global SUL and significantly helped me before I got GR with Commons file moves. --SHB (tc) 02:28, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Yes, of course. Iming (talk) 07:43, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hello @Iming
You should try both. Take a look at my user page here. There I clearly describe what I actually do and why I edit internationally. Without asking for it in the Polish and Turkish Wikipedia, an sysop must have read this and I was upgraded by them because of it. Greetings זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 10:11, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hi Ziv, thank you for your advice. I have created accounts in all the wikimedia series wikis. Yeah, you are right, let me re-design the typesetting of my user page, or I can design a template to help filemovers mark themselves as filemovers. Iming (talk) 15:15, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I support the request of my two Filemover colleagues. זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 18:52, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
In the past whenever the script would not be able to edit at some wiki it would create a job for a bot that would do the replacement instead. Is that not the case anymore? It has been a while since I have been very active as a Commons filemover myself. --Base (talk) 20:30, 24 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hello @Base
I'm not Imming, but I'll answer your question. Of course the Delinker bot still exists, it would be pretty stupid if it didn't, because unlike us file movers, the bot is practically extended confirmed in all language versions so that the bot can also edit archives, user subpages or blocked pages. But that's not the point, ultimately it's about why should Iming give the bot a command when he can do it just as well under its own name? זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 21:44, 24 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Global exemption to CAPTCHA for Ziv

[edit ]
Status: In progress

Hello Stewards.

I'm a file mover on Commons. I would like to request extended rights so that I can edit in all language versions without Captcha. Thank you very much if you could make this possible. --זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 19:40, 14 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Hey @Ziv, same question like above, have you tried using User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL? That is fixing most captcha problems after a few days. Best regards, TenWhile6 00:11, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hello @TenWhile6
No, I haven't tried the tool, I didn't even know that it existed. But I knew that you can apply for the right to suppress captchas here and actually I only did it because I was annoyed by the poorly made captchas on Wikipedia when manually replacing image file names in some language versions, as a glasses wearer with a very strong correction. I often ended up typing the letters incorrectly. Normally you need a certain number of posts for the captcha to eventually disappear, that's what happened to me on the Japan Wiki, and on the China Wiki a friendly sysop quickly upgraded me so that I could edit freely. And this tool solves the problem? Does it suppress the captcha? It's also about moving files automatically. I can try out the tool. Can I ask? Captcha rights are apparently not granted very often? Although it would certainly make sense for Filemover. זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 00:53, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
That will solve the problem on 90%+ of projects, as they do not require edits to be autoconfirmed. Use it once, then wait 4 days. — xaosflux Talk 01:09, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Addition, OK, I've looked at some user accounts that have this tool activated. It seems that it just creates a lot of accounts, otherwise I don't understand the exact function of it. Ultimately, however, the filemover script does this too when I move a file from Commons and that's why I'm now connected to 489 accounts. The tool doesn't seem to help me at all. I stick to it, I would really like to have the rights. Merci זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 01:10, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
The reason it works is because most of our SUL projects will autopromote accounts to the "autoconfirmed" group 4 days after you register there. That tool causes your account to be registered on every project. Autoconfirmed includes "skipcaptcha". — xaosflux Talk 01:23, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
For all of these requests - support. If necessary, make it temporary, but why make them wait unnecessarily? Leaderboard (talk) 02:42, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
+1, since CAPTCHA exemption is not a sensitive right and could be easily given to reasonably trusted users. Svārtava (t ɕ) 05:23, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
+1, I would also support granting captcha exempt to filemovers on request. ToadetteEdit (talk) 07:38, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
+1, yes, I've supporting to granting the exemption upon it's requested by trusted user. --- Sukumαr05[@píng mє] 09:13, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Yes, it is useful. Hehua (talk) 08:29, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
+1, trusted user. captcha exemption will make her work easier. Borhan (talk) 14:59, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
+1, agree with you. We should grant this right to one of the filemovers in Commons once they request it, since this right will help them to easily do some file ranaming work and filemovers normally are trusted users for this right de facto. Iming (talk) 15:25, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Thank you for your support guys! ❣️ זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 18:54, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Global exemption to CAPTCHA for Hehua

[edit ]
Status: In progress

Hello, I am a filemover on commons wiki. I need to use this right to skip captcha to replace the files in other wikis like jawiki and some small wikis. I often meet such problems. Thank you.--Hehua (talk) 14:01, 19 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Can you explain a bit more your problem, using your stated use case of jawiki as your example? I don't see any abusefilter hits for you there, and your account is already holds the (skipcaptcha) permission there. — xaosflux Talk 17:20, 19 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
That is because I have the autoconfirm right on jawiki now. However like what Iming said, some wikis have captcha for non-autoconfirm users. It is difficult to get the right because of the language or other problems. Thank you. Hehua (talk) 01:02, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I support the request of my two Filemover colleagues. זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 18:52, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Global exemption to CAPTCHA for Abzeronow

[edit ]
Status: In progress

I'm a sysop on Wikimedia Commons. To compliment the annual undeletions of newly public domain work, I try to restore usage of files that had been deleted on Wikimedia Commons to Wikimedia projects where appropriate. I probably won't need this right that often, but I do restore usage on Chinese Wikipedia and the like often enough that a CAPTCHA exemption would be helpful. Thank you. --Abzeronow (talk) 21:01, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

I support the request of @Abzeronow. זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 21:26, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@Ziv: I am well aware that your comment is more or less an endorsement than a formal support vote, but FYI that CAPTCHA requests aren't normally votes. :) --SHB (tc) 00:28, 21 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hello @SHB2000, of course I am well aware of that. Greetings זיו「Ziv」 (talk) 01:30, 21 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Global abuse filter helper for TenWhile6

[edit ]
Status: In progress
Not ending before 31 January 2025 10:43 UTC

Dear Wikimedians, I would like to ask for global abuse filter helper rights. Besides being a global sysop and rollbacker, I’m an active dewiki & metawiki abuse filter maintainer [1] [2]. Due to my experience with abuse filters I sometimes assist in creating and improving abuse filters on wikis where I’m not local admin, for example Wikidata. This would be much easier with abuse filter helper permissions and allow me to see the hitlist of private filters. GAFH would also give me the opportunity to analyse private filters on other wikis and import parts of them to dewiki or metawiki, which is very helpful in case of crosswiki vandalism. Recently I had this case again and because I didn't have GAFH, stewards/local admins had to send me the abusefilter content. This is doable in the beginning but when this process is needed every time, it’s annoying for both them and me.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks, --TenWhile6 10:43, 24 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
