Requests for global rename permissions
Global rename for وسيم
- Wiki: meta.wikimedia.org (list 'crats • bot policy • summary • 'crats rights)
- Not ending before 21:41 10 February 2026 (UTC)
→ Reason 1. Community need: In the Arabic Wikipedia, username change requests are currently handled by a very small number of active renamers. At present, only two users are consistently processing requests (Dr-Taher and Alaa), which naturally leads to delays and a growing backlog. By having Global Renamer access, I would be able to help reduce waiting times, ensure continuity, and support users who request timely username changes across projects.
Reason 2. Why I'm suitable?: I have thoroughly reviewed and understood the Global Rename Policy and the Global Renamers guidelines. Additionally, I'm highly active on a daily basis, including during academic periods.
- Strong oppose. No reason was provided, and I am not seeing any extensive cross-wiki history on the user's CentralAuth (more than 3800 edits on Arabic Wikipedia). I would recommend to close this nomination early. Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 00:09, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

- @Der-Wir-Ing,
- While my account is relatively recent, the level of trust granted to me within this short timeframe reflects consistent activity and responsible conduct. Within approximately 5 months, I have been entrusted with multiple advanced permissions on the Arabic Wikipedia such as: Rollbacker and Editor, which are only granted after demonstrated policy awareness, and sustained constructive contributions.

- @Codename Noreste,
- I would like to clarify that the reason was not intentionally omitted. I followed the instruction template when opening the request, but I misunderstood where exactly the explanation should be placed, so it was not included at the time of posting. Since the oppose was based on the absence of a reason rather than the content itself, I would kindly ask whether you would consider withdrawing or reconsidering your vote after the rationale is added.

- Oppose Oppose Although I see that you are a rollbacker on arwiki, I think you are acting prematurely and may not be fully familiar with global renaming. Moreover, based on your description, I believe this would probably just be a "hat" you are putting on (after all, you mostly handle renaming requests on arwiki), and your global activity level is also insufficient. 浅村しき (talk) 17:33, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- @ShuQizhe,
- Sir, I have carefully read the Global Rename Policy and the Global renamers Policy. With all due respect, I am not a "hat." If you look at the archives for Arabic Wikipedia: Username Change Requests for October 2025, November, December, and January 2026, you will see that only Dr- Taher and Alaa were handling requests. I kindly request that you struck through your statement as it is an untrue claim. To further demonstrate that I am not a "hat", in December I asked an administrator if he could remove the Autochecked (in Arabic:مراجع تلقائيا) user permission after receiving the "Editor" permission (look here). I believe this serves as strong evidence that I am not a "hat." Btw, i said this before: By having Global Renamer access, I would be able to help reduce waiting times, ensure continuity, and support users who request timely username changes across projects.
- Yours Faithfully,
- Wassim

Hello,
I would like to request global rename permissions. I am an administrator on the Arabic Wikipedia, the executive director of multiple Wikimedia affiliates, and an active contributor on the Arabic and French (newcomer at this project) Wikipedias. I also hold additional rights on Commons, Wikidata, and several other projects.
The main reason: for submitting this request now is to be able to process blocked rename requests smoothly and efficiently, while fully respecting Wikimedia policies and global renaming guidelines.
Regarding Languages: I am fluent in Arabic, English, and French, and I have basic knowledge of Spanish and German.
Thank you for considering my request. --SanBonne (talk) 22:14, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
- No issues at all as you are an arwiki sysop, but are you using LLM for this nomination? aqurs 🍧 00:43, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hello @Aqurs1,
- Thank you for your question. I checked it grammatically, as it could contains errors. The prompt with the draft is:
check, make it clear and correct, and professional:
"Hello, I would like to request the global rename permissions, I am admin at Arabic Wikipedia; the ED of multiple affiliates, and active on Arabic and French (Newbie) wikipedia; plus to having some additional rights on Commons, wikidata, and others. The main reason of asking this request now is to process blocked requests smoothly and efficacilly respecting wikimedia policies. I am fluent at Arabic, English and French, and knowing the basics in Spanish and German." - Then I repolish the version I got manually, adding subtitles, which are "The main reason" and "regarding languages".
- I hope my answer is clear for you and for whoever else wondering about it.
- Best SanBonne (talk) 07:13, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
- + Maybe you are also wondering about the chatbot answer; thus, it is good to add it here:
- Here’s a polished, clear, and professional version of your message. I’ve kept the tone aligned with what stewards expect on Meta while making your experience and motivation stand out more confidently.

- Neutral Neutral - The fact that SanBonne used AI in itself is something I will usually penalise, because I want to hear your voice, not an LLM. The fact that you disclosed the use of AI is what makes me not oppose this candidature. The use of phrases like "...and professional..." increases the likelihood of unexpected changes in meaning, and is what probably contributed to the LLM issues exhibited by another candidate in this year's steward election. If you claim that you are "fluent" in a language, I expect you to be able to write your statement without touching an LLM. Your original statement is perfectly fine - it's not like we expect perfection. Leaderboard (talk) 18:02, 13 February 2026 (UTC)

- Question Question: SanBonne: I have supported your request, but I would like to ask a simple question, if you don't mind. If you become a renamer, what would you look at before accepting a rename request? Please don't use an LLM to answer this question. – DreamRimmer ■しかく 16:42, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for supporting me. Here is my transparent answer without LLM:
- I have read the policy carefully before applying to get the rights. Mentioning that, I will mainly work to help with renaming in Arabic Wikipedia locally, but not without giving a hand and helping on the global one as I can and when needed.
- Detailed Answer
- First of all, I will find if the name is from a language I understand or not; if not, I will ask for help "as possible" to make sure that the new name is not violating the naming policy in general (the local and the global one).
- Second: I will review why he wants to change his username, the purpose of this renaming, and whether there are local renamers whom the user should reach first (I found that as an action done in a recent case, as I remember)
- Third: Review if his first renaming happened or not. If not, find out why the user wants to rename his account (username) again.
- Fourth: I will review the renamer's global contributions to make sure that the user is not seeking the rename to conceal or obfuscate bad conduct or that he is not a blocked user (as blocked users can't change the username during the blocking period).
- On the other hand, I will review if the username requested is used around WikiProjects or not, which also has other cases to solve.
- I hope my answer is clear and covers the cases. If you have other important points to add, I am happy to learn from the experienced and have more information and knowledge than me.

As a user who regularly contributes in three different wiki projects (the English Wikipedia, the Indonesian Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons), I need the global IP block exempt to continue my contribution within this projects. Thanks, --Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 03:52, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Same as below, you should be able to just configure your proxy for the auth domain, seeing as it is the only one blocked? — xaosflux Talk 10:07, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Adding a short-term while you get that figured out. — xaosflux Talk 10:08, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Global IP block exempt for Agus Damanik
- Global user: Agus Damanik (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA )
Right now, our country in Indonesia is in the process of blocking the authorization of Wikimedia project site. Cause I need to contribute to various site, this will held me back to edit cause it needs me to use vpn. Do you mind to give me this permission as long as the blockage happened in Indonesia --Agus Damanik (talk) 19:10, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Agus Damanik This X post says auth.wikimedia is already blocked. Did you actually face the problem, or are you worried that it might be blocked soon? ~ Yahya (talk • contribs) 08:04, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Agus has already encountered the problem. In fact he was the first one to report it publicly. It was only after his report that users also lodged similar complaints, which led to that X post. Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 09:56, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- auth.wikimedia doesn't require 'not being blocked' to access, you could configure your proxy for that specific domain. — xaosflux Talk 10:06, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Global IP block exempt for Jack Wylde

Currently, Wikimedia authentication is blocked in Indonesia. Because I need to contribute to other projects than Indonesian Wikipedia, like English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons, I want to request the global IP block exempt for VPN use until the block problem solved in Indonesia. I already encountered the problem while accessing Wikipedia with logging in without VPN. Thanks! --Jack Wylde (talk) 15:05, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Done added a medium-term while options can be considered. Current understanding is that only one of our domains is unreachable, and that one doesn't require not being blocked to use. — xaosflux Talk 15:09, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- It mass-affecting contributors. People can still read and edit anonymously, but once you're already logged in, when you open the browser to go to the wiki, suddenly you aren't able to access the website, because the internet provider blocking the access to auth.wikimedia.org. If one is not logged in, they can browse and edit anonymously, but unable to log in. That's why in near future (unless WMF and our government came to an agreement over the registration of service provider in our country) we will see mass of Indonesian editors asking the IPBE because many will need to access VPN to continue contributing using their account (not anonymously).
- Since its just beginning, the ripple effect is not felt yet. But I believe it will soon. The block came suddenly without any warning and all of us was caught off guard. The issue has cropped up since last year, but we thought the government wouldn't dare to block wiki access in our country. We guessed wrong.
- PS: We are the first one registering, because we have our ways of still login to our username, while hundreds or maybe thousands are still unable to do that (otherwise the SRGP might be flooded by request by now). We are still trying to find a better way to inform them how to log in by other means than VPN. ✒ Bennylin 15:40, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Hello team, Request for Lingua Libre project.
Our development server (IP: 57.128.108.213), hosted on OVH, is currently affected by a global block on the range 57.128.0.0/17 (reason: Open proxy/Webhost).
This server is essential for testing pre prod and the automated upload of audio recordings to Wikimedia Commons via API. The block is currently preventing us from debugging the upload workflow for the Lingua Libre tool.
I am requesting a global IP block exemption for this specific IP address to allow our bot/backend to interact with the API for development purposes.
Project Link: Lingua Libre / https://dev.lingualibre.org
Affected IP: 57.128.108.213 && 54.38.224.175 (Future production server IP)
Thank you for your help in supporting this community tool., --Michael Barbereau WMFr (talk) 17:06, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Hi all. I'm requesting global rollback so that I can check TA IPs for abuse in line with the policy, as well as being able to use rollback scripts such as Selective Rollback for reverting edits when SWMT patrolling. Tenshi! (Talk page) 00:20, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

- Question Question: Under what circumstances do you consider it acceptable to revert as "unexplained content removal", especially in languages you don't speak? lp0 on fire () 08:56, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- When the removal is not by the author of the text, there is no summary or an unsatisfactory explanation is given (e.g. default blanking summary, "Fix text" while removing an entire section), and whether the content removed was nonsense or vandalism. For languages I don't speak, I have to rely on machine translation to check the text, which isn't always accurate. Generally, I double-check the translation between two machine translators to see if there are any differences in translation, then I decide whether it should be reverted or not. Tenshi! - Support Support per aqurs. We often met on duty where Tenshi was faster than me. I would have liked to see slightly more than 2500 edits outside of their homewiki. --NDG (talk) 11:56, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose Oppose I see Tenshi around a fair bit while patrolling, and I think they are a valuable addition to the SWMT. That said, their reverts are often problematic when reverting as "unexplained content removal"; there are reasons not to restore content other than that the content removed was nonsense or vandalism.

- I'm sorry, but the edits above don't inspire confidence. I'll also note that I didn't have to dig to find those; they were just the first diffs I found. When I'm patrolling I sometimes see an edit that I think is better left for the local community to assess, and then see Tenshi revert it; I'd accept a few mistakes, but this seems like a pattern, and I'd rather they not have global autopatrol and autoreviewrestore just yet. lp0 on fire () 17:22, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- I agree that most of the edits you've presented aren't any good, though I'd like to clarify two. For diff 12, SWViewer will pseudo-rollback if you do not have rollback permissions. I did not know this at the time and thought it would just undo the shown edit. Likewise with diff 9, SWViewer presents only wikitext, so I wasn't aware the templates were non-existent. Tenshi! (Talk page) 18:46, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- I've struck diff 12. Diff 9 still seems problematic to me. By the way, all of what I've just said should be accompanied with a huge helping of "thank you for your excellent work fighting vandalism and please keep it up". I just think you're a little hasty to revert sometimes. lp0 on fire () 18:50, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose Oppose per lp0 on fire, as these are quite recent, but with thanks for your work so far. Please be really careful with content removal, even if there is no edit summary it doesn't necessarily indicate you're free to revert and practices can vary on different wikis. --Ferien (talk) 21:02, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
