What is the current status of global renaming?

[edit ]
Latest comment: 1 day ago 9 comments7 people in discussion

Hello. There appear to be a lot of requests for Global Renamer status recently. Is there any specific need for additional renamers, is there any significant general backlog or need for additonal languages? I don't have a point, I just like to understand if the requests are reasonable. If there is any better venue for this question, please feel free to move it. --Krd 14:07, 21 December 2024 (UTC) Reply

As noted on Global renamers#Users with global rename access, we currently have a total of 96 global renamers from across all the projects. Blocks around offensive usernames are quite common, among many other reasons. Language barriers also hinder renaming users that make a request in a different language. My opinion is that the project-wise need is demonstrated. For example, we'd need relatively more renamers from English Wikipedia than others. The list nonetheless tells about the need of renamers that know a different language. These are my personal observations and I am hopeful others will also weigh in. signed, Aafi (talk) 16:37, 21 December 2024 (UTC) Reply
Indeed, we are currently in the season of GREN recruitment, and an unusually high number of users are applying it in the last few months. This includes a few English Wikipedia sysops (all from this year's admin class), who are applying/applied for the right to help in the backlog of unblock requests requiring rename, and the unblock request Category is often backlogged so help is needed. Some users came to apply due to the low number of XX-N users, in order to have more multilingual renamers. Given not one of them was marked as not done in the last month, and of the currently six(!) requests, all of them would certainly pass (bringing the number of users with the global-renamer flag to a milestone number). Of course I could not access special:globalrenamequeue to check the number of requests but I think that there's no real backlog there. On an unrelated note, I also plan to request global rename but I know very well that many users will vote against me for various reasons should I apply for it now so it is what it is... There was no backlog in the queue over the past six months, as far as I can see. It is good to have volunteers from various language projects, as they can address local requests within their local context. However, it is crucial to ensure that only experienced, trusted, and qualified users take on this role, as GRN is one of the most sensitive user rights. —MdsShakil (talk) 19:55, 21 December 2024 (UTC) Reply
There are currently 0 requests in the VRT queue; 2 requests in Special:GlobalRenameQueue/open, with a backlog of ~3 hours. — xaosflux Talk 20:48, 21 December 2024 (UTC) Reply
I have to say that the number of GREN requests over the last two months is a bit excessive because 1) There isn't really any backlog of rename/vanish requests on VRT or on the queue, and I do not see any reason on why more people are applying for the right when there are already enough renamers (let alone stews); and 2) the high number has produced unnecessary drama, especially after the meatpuppetry concern involving a current GREN candidate and another account, and another recent candidate which attempted to gain advanced accesses in 45 days, with people changing their opinions especially after an rfa was opened and ultimately ended I withdrawal. Right now, a GREN candidacy is currently on hold due to a canceled oppose vote due to the aforementioned meatpuppetry case above (it was previously put on hold then marked as not done). Sorry, but in what position are you/with what certainty are you able to claim that the renaming queue is not backlogged? I strongly advise you not to make such comments if you do not have access to the system at all. Furthermore, the recent spike in GREN requests were mostly enwiki admins, where unblock queues and especially username violation unblock&rename queues are always backlogged and in dire need of more volunteers. Drama was caused by multiple factors, and not just one you're calling it out. A09 |(pogovor) 09:25, 30 December 2024 (UTC) Reply
Not to mention that second instance of "drama" in said example was caused by none other than the candidate themselves. The first was due to a misunderstanding, neither of which had anything to do with the influx of GREN requests. Toadette, why are you acting like an expert in areas you clearly don't know about? This is not the first time, either, it's happened countless times. --SHB2000 (tc) 09:28, 30 December 2024 (UTC) Reply
Re This is not the first time, either, it's happened countless times.. Not arguing here, nor on SRGP. I am providing opinions from my point of view, and should not be taken seriously. As for the expert question, I am not trying to be, or act as, an expert in the relevant areas; I use as much knowledge as I could, to be able to express the situation even though I do not have access to the relevant tools. As for this comment, I am emphasizing the number of undos made on SWViewer, not the total number of undos the user has made in question. I specifically didn't enter into the manual undos/undos using scripts in the case. As with the claim that the queues are backlogged or not, I have used the two comments above as reference.
I have been learning a lot and have been given much advices, for example not to nominate users for autopatrol here. I know that the two nominations were examples that I was acting as an expert, how can it be countless times; if I forgot something, you can say it.
For now, I should also considering on not commenting anymore and simply piling the votes (simple vote with no rationale). ToadetteEdit (talk) 14:20, 30 December 2024 (UTC) Reply
