Wikimedia Brasil, renaming of Grupo de Usuários Wiki Movimento Brasil is a Brazilian non-profit association affiliated to the Wikimedia Foundation. Founded in 2013, WMB seeks, among other goals: to amplify, improve and diversify the content and community among Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia; and support the role of social organizations in the open knowledge ecosystem.
Who we are

[edit ]Wiki Movimento Brasil emerged from some community organization experiments dating to 2005 and 2006. Those strictly volunteer and informal experiments aimed to organize groups of editors and outreach the Wikimedia projects in Brazil.
The Grupo de Usuários Wikimedia no Brasil, whose trade name is "Wiki Movimento Brasil", was recognised officially by the Wikimedia Foundation in 2013.
Six founding members came together in 2016 to elaborate the first strategy for Wiki Movimento Brasil. In the following year, the association had its statutes registered in a notary’s office and established a professional structure.
Although it was derecognized by the Wikimedia Foundation in 2018, Wiki Movimento Brasil did not interrupt its activities and was recognized by the Foundation again in 2019. It consolidated its professional team in the following year and increased the number of associate members. At the time of group-wide writing of this multi-year strategy in 2022, Wiki Movimento Brasil has 32 associate members and is a key component of the Wikimedia Movement.

Grupo de usuários Wiki Movimento Brasil
[edit ]The Wikimedia Community User Group Brasil was derecognised in May 26th of 2018.[4] After that, the group has been renamed Grupo de usuários Wiki Movimento Brasil (Wiki Movement Brazil User Group, in English) due to Wikimedia trademark rules. The logo was changed for the same reason. This page mentions both names for historical reasons (the former in events and reports before the derecognition and the new one after that) and we do not claim any right on the names used before the derecognition.
Wikimedia Brasil
[edit ]On 11 December 2024 Wiki Movimento Brasil was recognized as a Wikimedia Chapter by the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. Since 13 February 2025, we use the name Wikimedia Brasil.[5] [6]
Objectives
[edit ]- Facilitate contact and ensure collaboration between synergistic partner entities and related projects in support of open knowledge;
- Act with equity across the entire territory, considering the economic, social, and technological inequalities of Brazil;
- Promote the autonomous and sustainable formation of local groups and build a shared Wikimedia experience in the country;
- Work on the consolidation and institutionalization of partnerships with underrepresented communities in Portuguese-speaking countries, with affiliates from the Global South, and re-center Wikimedia on peripheral realities;
- Plan and promote practices and strategies that ensure the long-term economic and community sustainability of WMB as a coordination hub and autonomous promoter of networks in support of free knowledge;
- Contribute to the improvement of open technologies and consolidate the digital infrastructure for public interest according to regional realities and needs;
- Position Wikimedia in Brazil in relation to digital transformations and internet governance in support of information integrity, epistemic justice, and free knowledge.
Strategy 2026-2028
[edit ]Following the 2023-2025 strategic process, WMB organized a one-year collaborative process to design a new strategy for the years 2026 to 2028. It was guided by the recommendations of the Movement Strategy 2030 and the WMB's 2024 Theory of Change.
The WMB Strategy establishes three strategic axes:
- Axis 1 icon Sustain collaborative practices in favor of free knowledge
- Axis 2 icon Articulate strategic alliances in defense of digital public goods
- Axis 3 icon Promote the Wiki methodology on the internet in Portuguese

If you wish to become an affiliate or a member of Wikimedia Brasil, please fill out the membership form.
- Your request to join the chapter as a member will be reviewed by the association in assembly
- Your request to join the chapter as an affiliate will be reviewed by the association board.
Admission decisions are based primarily on:
- Possessing moral integrity and an unblemished reputation;
- Demonstrating interest in and/or possessing knowledge related to the areas of activity of the Association;
- Agreeing to the Bylaws and the principles defined therein;
- Presenting an identity card.
Approved applicants will be added to the official members or affiliates list.
Form Privacy
- All the information collected through the form is treated with confidentiality, accessible only to the people responsible for analyzing memberships applications in our Association.
- We follow the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (Law No. 13.709/2018), and the data collected is exclusively for this membership process.
