These include climate change and environmental sustainability, digital transformation, human capital and the future of work, inclusive development, macro and financial stability, private sector development, and regional cooperation and integration.

What To Know

Eligibility

You should hold a PhD in Economics or a related discipline such as development economics, public policy, finance, political economy, statistics, or data science with strong economic applications. A strong research track record is important, demonstrated through publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed academic journals, preferably indexed in SSCI, ESCI, or recognized field-specific rankings. Experience in conducting empirical research using rigorous quantitative or qualitative methods is essential, along with the ability to translate research into policy recommendations or contribute to policy-relevant projects.

Application period

Applications are accepted annually from 1 January to 31 March.

Selection

A selection committee chaired by ADB’s Chief Economist will review applications in the second quarter of the year. This will be based on background, expertise, and research relevance. Only successful applicants will be notified by 31 July.

Conditions of visit

As a successful applicant of the ADB Visiting Fellow Program, you will:

  • Register in the ADB Consultant Management System
  • Come to ADB headquarters in Manila for 5–20 working days
  • Agree on your visit timing with ADB
  • Be assigned an ADB staff as your host
  • Deliver agreed outputs within the set timeframe
  • Publish the research paper as an ADB Economics Working Paper
Onboarding

Following the selection committee’s decision, you may receive:

  • Economy airfare reimbursement on the most direct, cost-effective route
  • Access to an office space during your visit
  • Per diem and allowance for hotel, meals, and other travel-related expenses
  • A modest honorarium

Non-entitlement: Your benefits exclude participation in ADB’s medical and dental retainer plans, staff retirement plan, salary, privileges, immunities, and other privileges for ADB staff.

Security: You will be liable for your own security and safety and are advised to register with your respective embassy in Manila. In case of evacuation from the country, you will follow the embassy’s contingency planning.
