Star power,[1] also known as the Countdown Timer (or just the Timer or timer) and counter,[1] is a game mechanic in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (and its reissue), Yoshi's Island DS , and Yoshi's New Island . This mechanic is first explained in the level Welcome To Yoshi's Island in the first Yoshi's Island and is represented by a number, which can be increased by collecting stars. If a Yoshi takes damage, Baby Mario (or any other baby in Yoshi's Island DS) flies away in a bubble and starts crying, and the number slowly counts down. The countdown stops when the Yoshi retrieves the baby, and the star power slowly restores to 10 if it is at nine or less. The number turns from yellow to red when it falls below 10 (in Yoshi's Island DS, the number is white, and turns yellow below 10 points and red for the last three points). If the star power reaches zero, Kamek's Toadies arrive and steal the baby, and the player loses a life. Each star adds one more point to the star power's value while a Checkpoint Ring adds 10 more, up to a maximum of 30. If the player has reached maximum star power, any extra stars released from Winged Clouds and tulips are replaced by coins. The number of points left in the player's star power is also directly added to the final score when completing a level.
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue, in addition to collecting individual stars to increase the timer, the Yoshis can use items called 10-Point Stars and 20-Point Stars.

If you get hit by an enemy and take damage, Baby Mario will fall off of Yoshi's back. When this happens, the power of the stars will protect Baby Mario for a short while. A timer appears to show just how long this protection lasts. If the counter reaches zero, Baby Mario will be swept away by Kamek's toadies. Try to get Baby Mario back on Yoshi's back before time runs out![2]
